Crossroads for My Blog: Saftey & Security Violations, When Blogging Impacts Real Life
Hi Friends. It is with a very heavy heart that I write this post. When I started my blog a little over a year ago, I had no idea the amazing friends I would make, the connections that would develop amongst virtual strangers and me. That’s the problem, though. There are a lot of virtual strangers who read my blog. If I get 75 comments per post, that means there are still thousands of people per day that visit my blog and I have no idea who they are, but they know a whole lot about me, my family, and my life.
Recently there have been a few instances where my safety and security, my family’s safety and security, and our privacy as a whole have been compromised because of my blog. It’s no secret that my life is an open book on my blog.
I have always said I blog for interpersonal connections Here, Here, Here, or Here. I don’t blog only to show the food I made because that does not hold my own interest.
I am told over and over through hundreds of glowing and appreciative emails and comments each week that my readers thoroughly appreciate my candor, my openness, my willing to share my thoughts and life with you all. And thank you to my readers. As Scott has said, these security breeches are a result of my success and because I do have readers. However, it seems my sharing and openness has exposed me and my family and left us vulnerable, feeling violated, and frankly, scared.
I don’t have to share my life with total strangers, I don’t “get anything out of it”. I am not a celebrity being paid to share what I do, what I eat, where I go, how I parent, what my workouts are, you name it. I simply like to share what I’m up to and the blog is fun, and I enjoy helping people, virtually speaking. But not at the risk or expense of my safety or my family’s safety.
Obviously you can understand that I am not going to go into the various and specific instances that have occurred, but suffice to say I am rattled and being that I am way more than “just” a food blogger, that my blog is so intertwined with my life, I am not sure where this leaves me.
Do I want to blog? Yes.
Do I want to blog the way I always have? Yes.
Do I think it is wise for my safety or my family’s safety to continue blogging as I always have? No.
What am I going to do? Continue to not post pictures of Scott, be much more vague about locations/places/whereabouts, give less information about Skylar, give less personal or identifying information about myself, and still try to blog about my life, but be more careful.
Am I shutting down my blog? No.
Do I wonder if I am nuts for continuing my blog? Yes, definitely.
Will I continue to Post Daily? Yes.
From Yesterday…
