Energy and Sleep Supplements – Thoughts?

Hi Friends!  I am on Pacific time zone and am a night owl, so as I am writing this, some of you on the east coast may already almost be back at your desk at work.  Or on your way to an 8am lecture class.  Poor you.  I hope your first week in 2011 goes off without a hitch.

Product Review Time…
Since I received quite a few product samples while I was traveling in December, don’t be surprised if you see quite a few reviews in January.

For example, I received two samples of Relax Zen shots 

The Orange is for Day:
Reduce stress and fatigue
Increase focus and alertness
Balance mood
Enhance productivity
Promotes restful sleep

Blue for Night
Reduce stress and fatigue
Increase focus and alertness
Balance mood
Enhance productivity

Scott tried these.  I let him be the guinea pig since I am usually ultra sensitive to products like this.  So if there was to be any issue, I thought I’d let him have the issue.  haha!

He said they seemed to help and he did feel a little more focused at work with the Day Formula and slept more soundly that night with the Night Formula.    But considering we had been up for 26 hours traveling home earlier in the week, there was no true “need” for a sleeping supplement this week.

1. Best thing you ate or did over the weekend?
As I mentioned in my last post, my new camera and taking pictures and learning about it is making me so happy! Thanks to those of you who have told me you can tell a difference in photo quality.   All the photos in this post were taken with my old camera though.

2. Any New Year’s Festitvies, Plans, or Stories to share?
I worked so nothing noteworthy on my end.  But please tell me about your holiday weekend!

3. Do you use Energy Shots or Energy Gels, or Sleeping Supplements?
Coffee is the closest I come to energy boosters.  Or, Vegan Homemade Caramel Macchiato anyone?

Or working out and natural endorphin highs for energy!


When I was younger, I tried things like ephedrine and various drugstore energy pills and they left me wired, edgy, and feeling totally out of balance so I haven’t tried anything that says it “gives you energy” in years.

I know some runners and endurance athletes, use energy gels, too.  Which hey, if they work for that person, awesome.

In terms of sleeping aids, no, I don’t need those either.  I run around like a maniac between work, working out, parenting, housework, etc. and am happy just to lay in my bed for 6 hours.  99% of the time, I am asleep within seconds of hitting my pillow.  If anyone has trouble sleeping or relaxing, just follow me around.  I promise to wear you out.  And if I can’t, Skylar will!

Seriously though, I know insomnia is a real problem for people so if supplements help you, wonderful.

I did a whole post on Supplements here which included discussion about magnesium which is excellent for helping one relax.   And I also talked about probiotics in that post.

And in this post, I talked discussed my thoughts, in general, about supplements.  How I prefer a food over pills, type approach.

Have you ever tried energy or sleeping supplements or aides?  What do you think about them?
