Three C’s & TJ’s Finds

I hinted in my last post that I picked up some goodies at TJ’s during my ‘second shift’

I love the TJ’s wall of nuts

And this was my Instagram picture I posted with this caption: “So many nuts. Both in tj’s and in the world!”

As mentioned, IG is my new love.

Follow along and be prepared to be addicted to it!  If you don’t have an iphone, sucks for you.  <–Not to be blunt or anything.  Not sure if you can there’s apps for Instagram with other phones but I know it works with my iPhone.

But back to the nuts.

I went with 50% less salt peanuts (because I am super sodium sensitive) and the lime & chili mixed nuts.

The lime & chili mixed nuts are amazing.

Really, truth be told, I have been trying to find nuts like these

Chili +Cayenne + Lime + Peanuts

…ever since I returned home from Mexico City.

But I have realized that chili powder + lime peanuts are harder to come by than I thought.

And I almost made my own.  And still may.

This blend, however, rocks.

They are hot, and the more you eat, the hotter they get.  And there are flakes or pieces of lime leaves and red chili pepper “skins” and I eat it all.  Very little, if any, garlic, onions, and minimal sodium which is all perfect for me.

I have been told they have just lime & chili peanuts (not at my TJs) and their lime & chili cashews only are sold out.  Darn. But no complaints: Buy this blend if you like a KICK!

They were also sampling this coconut milk

Brand new product!

I imagine this will take the blogosphere by storm sort of like peanut flour did until they discontinued it.

It was really good.  Not overly sweet, but still sweet, with faint vanilla tones, not too thick like regular coconut milk can be (more like a reduced fat coconut milk) and also not overly coconutty if that makes sense.

Sometimes coconut milk can taste like you’re drinking a bottle of Hawaiian Tropic but this beverage was not that way at all.

I didn’t even used to like coconut anything.  But boy, times have changed.  I have lots of coconut recipes here

Including Magic 8 Bars

I personally still like my coconut milk kefir recipe better (coconut water + coconut milk + one packet of starter) that I make on the countertop.  I do love my fermented beverages.  But for what it was, a $1.99 premade beverage, two thumbs up on the new TJ’s product.

Next up, my fave section of the store.  Well, wait, it’s too hard to pick a fave section.  Dried fruit, nuts, coffee, baking supplies, dips, condiments, too hard to choose.

The coffee section always makes me happy.

Here’s my daily go-to ‘joe

All ground up.

I love this coffee.

I have a coffee reviews post where I’ve reviewed about 20 coffees, and for what it is, price, availability, and taste, this is and has been my daily coffee for about 5 years.  I always go back to it.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go pick the chili skins lime leaves out of my teeth from those nuts.

I need something with coconut in it.  Maybe a Raw Vegan Chocolate Coconut Snowball

No Bake, easy, one bowl, crowd pleaser.  Store in freezer for times when you just need chocolate.

And I can wash it all down with some coffee.

A Vanilla Iced Coffee sounds perfect.

From my last post, thanks for telling me I’m superwoman even though I just do what I need to do, and just somehow find a way to get it all done.  I sleep less than most, I suppose.  But yes, many of you do also feel like you have a ‘second shift’ Or third or fourth shift and jobs.  I’m more in the final categories but it works and I’m happy and can’t imagine life any other way right now.

Questions:

1. What’s your favorite of the three C’s I mentioned: chili (powder), coconut, or coffee?

And if there’s one you don’t like, which one and why do you think that is?

I love coffee the most.

And actually didn’t use to like coconut anything.  I thought it was all too overpowering and just tasted like I was eating, or ingesting, tanning oil.

But times changed and I like coconut and coconut containing recipes now but am still careful not to go too overboard or I do tend to feel a little overpowered by it.

And I love heat/kick/chili but don’t like sodium/garlic/onions and it’s harder than you’d think to find the former without the later.

2. Any TJ’s finds you’re loving lately?  <–I know I just asked this but it bears repeating.  Or have you noticed regional distribution?

The veggie masala burgers that people rave about in other parts of the country are not for sale in San Diego and there’s also some wine I know we can get here that others can’t get.  And I’m sure the tomatoes and watermelon I buy at TJ’s in San Diego isn’t the same that they are shipping to Rhode Island or Minnesota.

P.S. Last reminder about the $25 Giveaway.  Winner announced Friday.

My newest TJ’s find is the frozen peach “Otter Pop” type thing. No added sugar!

I’m surprised that my TJ’s (Fresno) has the veggie masala burger but San Diego doesn’t. Weird!

I love all 2 C’s…coffee and coconut tie for first place though.

TJ’s is great—I don’t have access to one when I’m home, so it’s always a destination point when traveling. I buy the SFSB, lots and lots of nuts, and random other things. I bought the crunchy seaweed snacks and loved them, but recommended them to someone who really thought they were gross…so I think they’re only good if you like the “sea” taste!

I have a droid (for now)…no IG on there. An iphone is on my To Buy list. Now with a macbook and ipad, I might as well have the phone too!

I actually don’t like chili powder, coconut, or coffee – sorry!

Loving this post though b/c I LOVE TJ’s, and go there just about daily as there is one 5 minutes from my house. <— dangerous lol.

and I agree with you that the nut section is totally fun there! So much variety.

My TJs staples consist mostly of produce. Right now I'm loving their organic strawberries and baby carrots :-) I also LOVE their honey mango shave cream (smells like HEAVEN) and their almond bar soap.

    1. Probably coffee.
    2. The spiced soybeans were good, I also dig the flattened bananas.

WOW the three C’s question is a tough one! I love all three, but I guess if I had to choose I would say coffee is my favorite. It’s just so awesome and I love having it as a part of my day, every day.
Regarding Trader Joe’s, I feel like every time I go in there, they have something new that I can’t resist trying! Today it was “Reduced Guilt Skinny Fries.” They are like the Pop Chip version of potato sticks; very tasty. And speaking of Pop Chips, Trader Joe’s makes a great version of those, too!

Out of those 3, coffee is my favorite and coconut is not my favorite. I’m starting to be ok with having a little bit of coconut flavor here and there, but the texture still drives me nuts — it just tastes like wax to me!

I have to say, I always hate it when I eat something on holiday, that I know I can’t get back at home. It just makes it all the more depressing to leave. But alas, such is life I suppose! I would have to say chili is my fave of the three. I get SUPER jittery with coffee, and one time I bought a fresh coconut and tried to make my own dried flakes… but I think it was rotten because it made me SO sick! Now I can’t even think about coconut without getting queezy. I love to go shopping on my work breaks too!

I’ve never seen the chili-lime mixed nuts; I wonder if they replaced the peanuts with that? Also, I’ve never seen the O.N.E. coconut water at TJs. Last time I looked, all they had was Zico brand, which is definitely not one of my favorite coconut waters. I’d better look again!
I can’t possibly choose between coffee and coconut; that’s like asking me to choose between my heart and my lungs!

Reminds me..I should run a ONE giveaway soon. Will email my contact :)

and when i asked the guy about the peanuts you told me about he was like huh? had never seen/heard of them and suggested the cashews lime/chili or the mixed nuts. you HAVE to try these mixed ones. went back today and they had the cashews but honestly the blend i got looks ‘chunkier’ with extra leaves and skins and stuff in it…for me, that’s a selling point!

Believe it or not, I do NOT like coffee in any shape or form – hot, cold, ice cream, or even the smell!! So bizarre. Chili is a wee bit too spicy, so I guess that leaves me with coconut! And, yes, I do love my coconut water! Makes my grocery bill huge, but it’s so tasty and thirst quenching. I also enjoy macaroons and homemade coconut popsicles!

As far as TJ’s goes, haven’t been in over 6 months. Our local TJ’s is always packed full of people, and i just enjoy the atmosphere of Whole Foods more! That nut selection sure looks great though. Enjoy your weekend, Averie!

Talk about moving and Trader Joe’s…I just moved from the East Coast to New Orleans. Due to moving company disasters, I “squatted” in my new home for nearly 3 weeks without clothing, furniture, and, worst of all, my coffee maker and magic bullet. I started a job and had to go to Target to buy a couple items of clothing that would be acceptable and discreet enough to rotate until my clothes made it off the truck / I got a couple paychecks.
It was/is crazy, but I’m surviving. I love my new city. The only thing I miss of my old life (besides my friends, of course!) is my proximity to Trader Joe’s. The closest one to me is now 9 hours away.

Coconut is barfy, and chili is good, but I couldn’t live without coffee. DAILY. Multiple times a day. In fact, all morning long. Today, I had two cups at home, and then went to my office, where I made more. I am the only one there who drinks it!! This is the first university I’ve been to where the faculty lounge/copy machine/office supplies office doesn’t have a coffee maker! I’m bringing mine to my office, and I have an extra french press that will also live there. I just need to get a microwave now.

That was off topic. Sorry, you mention coffee and my mind just goes. TJs is cool too. I don’t go there but once a year, but I love that Sumatra coffee; that’s a must buy.

So cruel! No TJ’s here ;) BUT probably a good thing for me! I agree with the Coconut Milk, it’s hard to find a good brand. But I’d like to have something to vary up my milks because I drink ALOT of almond milk. I kind of wonder if I should just try making my own? If it would be cheaper – and it wouldn’t have the added ingredients in the store-bought stuff? I don’t know…

Someone recently told me I should be drinking Kefir because it’s good for the gut! I picked some up but it’s dairy milk. I’ll try it anyways – but will have to check out your recipe. Thanks!

Obviously I bought stuff that didn’t need a fridge, since we were on the road. I really love the raw trail mix I picked up. I also picked up their soymilk, which I really liked. And an almond milk, although it was sweetened (they didn’t have regular unsweetened, which is what I normally buy). I used to love their coffee too. And actually, I used to get their Whole Wheat Sourdough bread, but I didn’t see it this last time :( I really wish they’d expand.

I actually just discovered the magic of shopping at TJ’s. So money-saving and so many tasty prepared foods!
