Fruit or Vegetable

Do you have a favorite vegetable?

It’s a tough call for me but I have a weakness for tomatoes

I know tomatoes are technically a fruit because they have seeds but no one I know in practical terms classifies tomatoes as fruit.

Cucumbers, squash, green beans and walnuts are all fruits technically, too, because they also have seeds.

I eat one tomato every day.

An apple A tomato a day keeps the doctor away.

Sometimes I eat them in an edamame and tomato salad

Sometimes sprinkled with stevia powder

I get my stevia from iHerb and you can use code AVE630 to save $5 on stevia, nooch, supplements, probiotics, bulk spices and more

Sometime I just dip my tomatoes in homemade vegan slaw dressing

And sometimes I eat them plain.

And sometimes I admire them at the farmers market

Below is what I call fruit

And these are all faves of mine

And please dip these…

 in this:

Chocolate Coconut Cashew Butter

And please tell me I’m not crazy for thinking of these as a vegetable.

From my last post, Winning Combo, I loved hearing your fave combos.

Chocolate + PB was pretty popular.  Surprise surprise.

If you still have chocolate + PB on the brain, maybe a homemade PB Cup?

Vegan, no-bake, microwave-friendly and takes about 5 minutes to make

1. What’s your favorite vegetable?

Hard for me to pick but cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts are all faves.  Even if they are a little too terrific fiber-riffic at times for me.

Green beans, sugar snap peas, zucchini, you name it, I really do love my veggies.

As much as I joke about loving sugar, and I do, if I don’t have my daily allotment of veggies, I am not happy and feel out of balance!

I think I need to make this Apple Glazed Vegetable & Edamame Stir Fry after talking about all these veggies

2. Favorite Fruit?

I love almost all fruits but not a fan of canteloupe, honeydew, kiwi, durian, and am just so-so about both papaya and banana (banana in things but not so much just plain See This Post for Banana-Containing Recipes & Ways to Use Extra Banana)

I love orchard fruit (peaches, plums, pears, nectarines) and also grapes (frozen!) are winners.  I love mango too!  And berries of all kind and types.

Very few fruits I don’t like.

3. Do you think of tomatoes as a Fruit or a Vegetable?

Lots of gorgeous fruit and veggie pics here. Never tried sprinkling stevia on tomatoes, interesting.

    1. Tough call too, I have so many.
    2. Probably watermelon.
    3. Vegetable because I use them in more savory recipes.

  3. Jaime — August 24, 2011 at 3:20 pm (#

    1. fave veggies = brussels sprouts (LOVEEE), carrots, broccoli, peas, zucchini, spinach, asparagus….I can’t think of a veggie I don’t like!
    2. fave fruits – strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, plums, pluots, kiwi, apples, pears, pineapple, watermelon, all melons, grapes…….the list goes on and on! I think the only fruit I don’t like is papaya
    3. I think of tomatoes as a vegetable, but I know they’re a fruit

Love my produce! I’m always rockin’ a fiber baby and I wouldn’t have it any other way :)

  4. Michelle (Peachy Palate) — August 24, 2011 at 3:23 pm (#

Fav fruit has to be peaches (though blueberries are a close second) and vegetable changes but at the moment it zucchini (also a big fan of fresh beets) but I just love a bit of variety! – Celery, carrots, green beans, eggplant, bell peppers, spinach, tomatoes and peas all feature regularly. Plums, raspberries, mango, kiwi, satsumas, blackberries, grapes and cherries are my fruity picks (I think we’re on the same page!) I love frozen grapes (eaten with crisp 85% Lindt chocolate is the way to go!)

    1. Favorite vegetable – um….well, by the seeds standard, is cucumber then also a fruit? Because I’ve always considered it a veggie, but it has seeds inside. LOVE cucs.

    2. Favorite fruit – strawberries

    3. Tomatoes are a fruit, but I also think of them as a veg. Really, does it matter? They are yummy either way.

  6. Lisa — August 24, 2011 at 3:31 pm (#

Tomatoes are definitely veg. So are avocados…technicalities of seeds and stuff aren’t what determine it for me—fruit is sweet! I guess tomatoes can have a sweet essence, but they are still more savory.

I love all fruits. Fave might be pineapple. Or apples right off the tree.

  7. Amber Shea @Almost Vegan — August 24, 2011 at 3:33 pm (#

    Cauliflower + watermelon!

  8. Sweet and Savvy — August 24, 2011 at 3:34 pm (#

I’m a fan of carrots And green beans for the veggie family, And I love pretty much every fruit imaginable! Except star fruit!

  9. Bev Weidner — August 24, 2011 at 3:35 pm (#

I prefer to think of tomatoes as IN MY MOUTH. Di.vine.

Favorites are: broccoli, edamame, mushrooms (I know it’s not a fruit or veggie, but I LURVE THEM) peas, red bell pepper, blueberries, raspberries, oranges, red wine.

    OH, I meant grapes! Whoops.

saw you on Deb’s site today! loved it!

happy bday (we’re the same age)

and wine, i mean grapes, me too :)

  10. Brooke — August 24, 2011 at 3:37 pm (#

To me…if it can be made into jam and eaten with PB on toast…it’s a fruit.

    Therefore, in my opinion…

    NOT a fruit.

Thank Goodness i am on the way to WF for a BUNCH of fruit!!
Lovely Post with photos, per usual :)

  12. Emily @ One Sweet Vegan — August 24, 2011 at 3:46 pm (#

Since tomatoes aren’t sweet, I always think of them as a vegetable. My favorite vegetable is hands down the artichoke (dipped in Vegenaise, of course).

  13. Bethany I. — August 24, 2011 at 3:47 pm (#

    1) My favorite vegetable is carrots, broccoli, asparagus, corn, squash, tomatoes (yes I consider them a vegetable), spinach, kale, brussels sprouts and probably many others, but these are the ones that I routinely go back to.
    2) I love all fruit especially peaches (I’m devouring them by the bunch before they go out of season), strawberries, blueberries, apples, bananas, etc. However I don’t like melons. I’ve never liked watermelon or cantaloupe and living in the South I get the weirdest looks when I say I don’t like it (I also get that look when I say I don’t like sweet tea).
    3) To me tomatoes=vegetable because it’s not sweet enough in my opinion to be a fruit. Although I love them baked in the oven with some olive oil, salt, basil, Rosemary, oregano, and pepper. To me they taste like pizza, but that could just be my taste buds.

  14. Jess@HealthyExposures — August 24, 2011 at 3:48 pm (#

Tomatoes are a veggie in my mind. Ironic that it’s technically a fruit when it’s probably one of the few veggies I wouldn’t try in a “sweet meets savory” form! haha. Maybe that’s why I’m still a little hung-up on the fact that you sprinkle them with stevia? Hmmm…never tried that! But there’s a first for everything :]
Anyways. Favorite fruit – bananas…blueberries…strawberries…nectarines…yeah, i can’t chose one. i’m really not picky, so long as i have a banana ready for breakfast ;)
and veggie…tomatoes, potatoes, i suppose i ought to throw lettuce in there since it is the basis for most of my salads…but i wouldn’t go walking around gnawing on it plain, either, lol.

    (…and I like Brooke’s answer above most!)

  15. Keelie (SweatEqualsSuccess) — August 24, 2011 at 4:02 pm (#

Asparagus, sweet potatoes, turnips, spinach and brussel sprouts for veggies!

Mango, raspberries, pears and watermelon for fruit!

And tomatoes are ALWAYS a veggie in my book! :)

    Stunning photos, as usual!

  16. Red Deception — August 24, 2011 at 4:06 pm (#

If I have to be honest, my favorite veggie is carrots. I love to eat whole, raw carrots as a work snack (with garlic hummus….yum!). I always get weird stares at work as I gnaw on the carrot. Oh well, someone has to be the healthy weirdo!

  17. Jen — August 24, 2011 at 4:07 pm (#

I, too, LOVE tomatoes. Like really really love them. It’s kind of ridiculous, and quite the joke in my family. I eat at least one a day, too. I often joke that I’m going to write a book about tomato tasting (you know, like wine tasting, but for tomatoes) and have been known to compose off-the-cuff odes to a delicious tomato. One of my parents favorite stories to tell is how once on a family road trip I made them stop at a grocery store and buy a couple of tomatoes and a loaf of bread so I could have a tomato sandwich because I wanted one RIGHT THEN, even though my parents were eating at a restaurant. My dad cut up the tomato with his pocket knife, and I sighed with delight in the backseat of the car. It makes me really happy when I read about how much you love tomatoes in one of your blog posts — a kindred spirit!

    • Averie (Love Veggies and Yoga) replied: — August 24th, 2011 at 4:15 pm

I bring them in my carryon to airports and saw them open with plastic knives from fastfood restaurants at the airports. So your pocket knife story is right up my alley :)

1.) My favorite vegetable is Asparagus
2.) My favorite fruit is fresh Cherries and Watermelon
    3.) Fruit

    Tomatoes = veggie to me!

I love tomatoes as well. I have 3 plants just starting to ripen – I can’t wait!

  20. Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance — August 24, 2011 at 4:24 pm (#

Tomatoes are good, but avocados take the cake in my book :) (another vegetable & fruit qualifier)

  21. Charissa — August 24, 2011 at 4:29 pm (#

    Fave veggie? Probably cucumbers…so refreshing!

  22. Betsy — August 24, 2011 at 4:56 pm (#

    Favorite fruits: watermelon & avocado
Dried fruit faves: Medjol Dates, raisins and Prunes!
Fav Veggies: spinach, butter lettuce, cucumber and yellow pepper!
I thought walnuts were nuts, not fruits!?

  23. Ali @ Urbanfruitbat — August 24, 2011 at 5:39 pm (#

zucchini noodles are my fave veggies, even thought those too are a fruit. I love greens if we are talking real veggies. I love all the fruit you don’t! Durian is my fav of all time, followed by the melons, papaya and banana ice cream! I consider tomato a fruit!

  24. Heather (Where's the Beach) — August 24, 2011 at 5:56 pm (#

That’s just a tough call on fave veggie. Um do sweet potatoes count. I could eat them morning noon and night. I love my apples, but when strawberries are in season, it’s hard to beat a really good strawberry.

  25. Victoria @ The Pursuit of Hippieness — August 24, 2011 at 6:16 pm (#

Watermelon and tomatoes. Done and done.

  26. Meredith (Reeftraveler) — August 24, 2011 at 6:34 pm (#

Your tomato shot is stunning!! It is wow-incuding.

I gravitate towards the tropical fruits like papaya, pineapple, papaya and banana. I discovered dragonfruit this year and love it!

The durian – I think I smelled one of those in Australia and it smelled like blue cheese!!

  27. Meredith (Reeftraveler) — August 24, 2011 at 6:35 pm (#

I guess I like papaya twice as much as the others :) Meant to say mango….

  28. blossjoss — August 24, 2011 at 6:45 pm (#

    1. Bell peppers. Red, green, yellow. Delish. Although I have been really obsessed with eggplant this summer. Peppers may take a backseat.
    2. Raspberries. Or blueberries or strawberries. I’m all about the berries.
    3. For all practical purposes, a tomato is a vegetable, at least as far as I’m concerned. And I like order, taxonomy, and being correct.

  29. Kaitlyn@TheTieDyeFiles — August 24, 2011 at 7:18 pm (#

Scientifically, all veggies are actually fruit. So I say you define them any way you want :) I say tomato is a veggie! Right now my favorite veggies are sweet potatoes. Love em! And it’s too tough to choose my favorite fruit. I love strawberries, but I’m also eating some right now so I could be biased!

  30. Katie — August 24, 2011 at 7:32 pm (#

I can’t pick! Every day (no really…every single day) I eat: lettuce, tomato, eggplant, pepper, cuke, mushroom, zucchini, and green beans. Mostly because my garden produces these all in mass quantities (or my neighbors and my garden, together, actually). But I also rotate broccoli, snap peas, carrots, etc in.

i hate banana and papasa but i love all melons.

Also, bell peppers and cukes are technically fruits too. whatever.

  31. Jessica — August 24, 2011 at 8:27 pm (#

My favorite veggies are spinach, corn, and bell peppers, although I think technically peppers are a fruit. Either way, bell peppers are my favorite “vegetable” in my mind.
Favorite fruits are watermelon, blackberries, raspberries, and kiwi.
Although I technically know a tomato is a fruit, I have to constantly remind myself of that. I guess I think of it as a vegetable.

  32. Kim — August 24, 2011 at 8:35 pm (#

Mmm i see tomatoes as a vegie!
My fave fruit is banana (which is no fun in Australia at the moment as a cyclone at the start of the year wiped out our banana trees. So theyve been veeeeeery expensive here all year! Boo!)
Also love watermelon in summer, and grapes! All colours.
Mmm as for vegies, i adore all veg! But faves are pumpkin, corn, potato, zucchini and red onion! Yum!

  33. Kris | — August 24, 2011 at 8:38 pm (#

I’m not a big tomato lover, I love me a nice AVOCADO…now is that a fruit or a veg????

    I love brussells…mmm

  34. Rebecca — August 24, 2011 at 8:48 pm (#

My favorite veggie is broccoli hands down. I also really love peppers (all), bamboo shoots, baby corn and leafy greens. Bananas are easily my favorite fruit, I have to have at least one a day. I see tomatoes as a fruit, but they’re kind of like avocados for me-both a fruit and a veggie.

  35. Kristen, Sweetly — August 24, 2011 at 8:51 pm (#

at this immediate moment, my favorite vegetables are carrots in peanut butter, or a head of romaine lettuce topped with a veggie patty/burger and cheese. i munched on carrots throughout the afternoon, to last until our dinner out at 9 pm tonight. :-) so good.

technicality doesn’t matter: tomatoes most assuredly equal vegetable.

  36. 180360 — August 24, 2011 at 9:13 pm (#

I wanted to tell you that I tried iHerb and LOVED them. Just placed my 2nd order yesterday. :)

As for faves… I like them all!

  37. Julie — August 24, 2011 at 9:45 pm (#

    1. Spinach is the basic go-to. Sweet potatoes are awesome and I discovered you can make butternut squash fries instead of sweet potato fries (and regular potato fries).
    2. I eat so many apples, bananas but they’re a little too sweet, and my newest favorite, honeydew!
    3. I know tomatoes are a fruit, but I still consider them a vegetable.

  38. Lorin — August 24, 2011 at 11:34 pm (#

Hmm..that’s a tough one. I love bananas for its versatility (it can go in oatmeal, baked goods, faux ice cream, parfaits). I love peaches too. I don’t know all fruit! Haha, I like fruit better than veggies. However, I love sweet potatoes with pb and maple syrup. I think I have a sweet tooth makes me like fruit better. Artichokes are fun to eat as well!

  39. Sara (The Veggie Eco-Life) — August 25, 2011 at 2:04 am (#

I categorize tomatoes definitely as a vegetable.
My favorite veggies are carrots, green beans and cucumbers. Favorite fruit… apples and kiwis!

  40. Sarah — August 25, 2011 at 4:55 am (#

You know, i’m not sure if I can think of a fave fruit or veg… although I MUST have carrots every day. I love them and get serious cravings if I don’t have my daily dose. Oh, and if I go too long without apples I get maje cravings too. I guess that answers your question! Although, I seriously love most fruit and veg and they need to feature significantly in my daily diet otherwise I feel like rubbish.

Tomato- they are defined as fruit but I defo think of them as veg. xxx

  41. Krista — August 25, 2011 at 5:19 am (#

I don’t know if I have a favourite veg b/c I really like them all. Except eggplant. HATE that! HAHA I love tomatoes tossed with feta, salt and pepper. YUM!

  42. Heather — August 25, 2011 at 7:22 am (#

Fav veggie: Corn on the cob
    fav fruit: Watermelon
Tomato is a veggie, never used it to bake a sweet pie nor have added it to fruit salad.

  43. Rachel @ the Avid Appetite — August 25, 2011 at 7:56 am (#

I think tomatoes are SO beautiful. I don’t love them in their raw form though…but hand me a pot of tomato sauce and I’m set for weeks :)

  44. Brigid of Vegging out in T-Town — August 25, 2011 at 9:28 am (#

    1. My favorites are any kind of summer squash (whether or not they are technically fruits), broccoli, and arugula.
    2. I have to go with yellow watermelon, blackberries, strawberries, mango, and pineapple. Now I’m hungry!
    3. They are biologically a fruit but culinarily a vegetable. I’m more of a cook than a scientist, so I go with veggie. :)

  45. Amber K — August 25, 2011 at 9:52 am (#

Tomatoes have always been a fruit to me. Probably because I saw the Full House episode where they talk about how it’s really a fruit when I was young enough that it stuck. I can’t even imagine thinking of a tomato as a vegetable. Although I did not know that about green beans! And avocado is technically a fruit, but I never really think of it as anything.

I totally want to make those peanut butter cups! I LOVE Reese’s. I wonder where I can find some of those liners because I have everything else to make them!

Favorites…ugh how to pick just a few? I love broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts too. And I eat bananas, strawberries, and apples daily. Yum!

  46. Beth — August 26, 2011 at 9:10 am (#

Favourite veg: tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. During the colder months it switches to sweet potatoes, carrots, and parsnips.

Favourite fruit: much harder to choose, but mainly bananas, mango, berries, apples and pineapple. When I’m in Barbados my favourite fruit is Papaya. Doesn’t taste the same here though :(

I consider tomato a veg, even though it is ‘technically’ a fruit.
