Projects & Telling

It’s Wednesday today.  Good.  That means we’re one day closer to Friday and the weekend.

I’ve been a busy bee.  I have lots of irons in the fire and projects I’m working on.

My theory is keep throwing things on the wall.  Eventually something will stick.

So til then, I just keep plugging away and keeping busy, mostly with photography-related projects and endeavors.

And yes, one day I hope to include photography as a career path, in some way.  Just like yoga is a life path, I am never “away” from it.  It is always with me, both on and off the mat.

I view photography as similar; it’s always with me.  My mind is always seeing and creating pictures, stories, images.  Even if I am not actually holding a camera.

In all my spare time when I’m not working or being a mommy or doing blog-related things or cooking or working out or running errands or recipe developing or wiping pizza sauce off chins I pick up my camera.

But other times I just look for the beauty in the world so that when I do have my camera in hand, I am ready to capture it.

Diane talked about this.

But photography is my passion and I really love it.  One day maybe I could make a career of it.  We shall see how it all plays out.

In the meantime, the show of life must go on.

Including eating and enjoying peaches and nectarines.  Soon juicy, fresh peaches will be a fleeting late summer memory.  Sniff.

And I made Mango Balsamic Rice, Beans, & Mixed Vegetables

Combine everything in one pot.

Don’t stress or obsess over what you have on hand and what goes in.  Very flexible recipe.

And in 20 minutes, you’re done.

With planned leftovers.  Cook once, eat twice; that’s my mantra.

I told you I’m addicted to this chutney!

I cook with it every chance I get like the Mango Balsamic Rice, Beans, & Mixed Vegetables recipe

Or just eat it with a spoon.  <– I’ll admit to that

Sweet + heat, no salt, no garlic or onions.  Perfect.

I also got my iHerb shipment of stevia and probiotics yesterday.

I’m addicted to those items as well.

Use code AVE630 on your iHerb.com order to save $5 off their already way-cheaper-than-retail-prices.  I save so much money with iHerb.  I’m into Thift Store shopping, remember?  Anything to save some cashola.

Thanks for the compliments on my latest creation, the Snickers Bar Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies

They were fun to make.  And more fun to eat.  And they were accepted here and here.

Making it on those sites validates and helps me have confidence that maybe my photography is okay.  Decent, for now.  But I want to get better!

I’ve talked about being judged before and how when it’s good, it’s great.  And when it’s harsh, it can be really harsh.  Not just in photography but with anything in life.

Questions:

1. What projects have you been working on lately?

As I said, I’ve got lots of irons in the fire.  But I always have been that way.

I like staying busy and pursuing different things and I have really varied interests from yoga to photography, lactation educator to real estate.  You name it, I’ve likely dabbled in it.

2. When you are working on things, do you tell people what you’re doing as you’re doing it, or do you just surprise people and tell them when it’s finished?  Whom do you tell things to?

I do a bit of both.

Some things I share with others because I like to have their feedback as I’m going along, or because they are close friends or family, and it would feel strange not telling them what’s going on or what I’m up to.

However, with other things, I find it’s better to just tell people when it’s done.

Talking about what you’re going to do, or what you’d like to do, sometimes causes people to be like yeah, sure, uh-huh, right.  And they’re thinking to themselves, she’s never going to pull that off.  And then if you don’t pull it off, you have egg on your face, and it’s kind of one of those told-you-so situations.  Which is why I keep some things close to the vest and just tell people when it’s done or happening.

Not to mention, some things, through no fault of one’s own, just don’t materialize or you change your mind and so why involve everyone in the blow-by-blow turn of events until you know for sure it’s a sure-thing.  I’ve learned this the hard way and it’s one of those life lessons that has come with age for me to be a bit selective about what to reveal, to whom, and when.

And as I’ve said before about blogging and for all the bloggers out there, you don’t owe the world an explanation on your blog, that’s for sure.

P.S. Thanks for your entries on the Say NO to Auto Giveaway and I’ve really enjoyed reading what it is with your camera, photography, or with shooting manually that you enjoy and also what has you stumped.  Keep your giveaway entries and thoughts coming.

Honestly, even before I had an official blog I would come to yours JUST to look at the pictures. Your photography skills are superb, Averie. I could definitely see you making a living off of it one day

And just so you know– If I had mangos I would be making this rice veggie mix as I type!

you are so sweet Brittany :)

And you dont need the mangos…it’s just an add in. Use peach jam, or not. Or pineapple chunks (canned), or not…the beauty of ANYTHING I make/post is that it’s highly adaptable to what you have! Just take the skeleton of the recipe and adapt as needed!

I am also working on some photography related endeavors! :) So fun!

I like to tell people I am doing something, because once it’s made public I feel like it’s actually happening and I am more inclined to follow through!

Sometimes I keep things to myself – for example, my husband and I travel a lot, but we fly standby sometimes. So we don’t usually talk about our upcoming trips until they actually happen – just incase we can’t get on a flight or something!

I always love your photographs :-)

I’m bad about believing in jinxes…and on top of that, I don’t like for people to know when I’ve failed at something. So, I don’t usually “tell” about big projects that I’m working on unless I’ve already had a few steps at success :-)

I usually share if I am working on something — I for sure tell Jason and my sisters, sometimes my parents. Other than that I keep things to myself. Usually Jason ends up sharing FOR me which is ok — somehow the act of telling someone what I want and what I’m working on makes me nervous, but if they find out on their own it is ok.

    Those cookies look incredible.

It depends – sometimes I tell people for motivation and accountability. But if it’s something personal I keep it to myself, I don’t take harsh criticism well!

I know, criticism is hard! That’s why the really personal things it can be scary finally revealing them b/c they are so near and dear to our hearts!

So true on Friday, what a week so far! Love that you’re so into photography, I hope you can make a career out of it!

    1. Tons at work, blog, cooking, and graphical editing.
    2. Depends on the project, surprising is fun, but sometimes hiding it is hard. :-)

Those nectarines look fantastic! I want one right now.

Your photography is fantastic. I don’t see why you couldn’t make it your career, since you have the knowledge and talent (and equally important, the drive).

I usually work on a project in relative secrecy and announce it when the work is complete.

not really second guessing so much as trying to be realistic with a family to support and it’s not like I am 19 anymore with no bills, no cares in the world… but thank you for the vote of confidence :)

I have a ton of projects I’m working on. Let’s see, my blog is a never-ending project, Meghan’s photo albums (which I’m so behind on), writing projects, decorating projects, etc etc etc . I love being busy though, so I’m not complaining.

I just placed another order to iherb like 10 minutes ago! I LOVE them.
You’re totally right though… I have a million things I’m interested in, and I’m kind of just playing around right now to see what fits, i.e. where I feel my happiest! I have to say, yoga is bringing me a lot of joy… we’ll have to see where that goes!

Yes, I am juggling 2 jobs right now, relocation (buying a new house, selling the old one), transferring 13-mo old to a new daycare, trying to keep up with my blog updates and working with a developer to clean up all of the kinks… – and dealing with ehmm… life. Sometimes I share w/ people, sometimes I don’t. You’ll always have the haters, so I would say – keep on going w/ your passion, because at the end, that’s all that matters! :)

It’s so funny when you come across something that you really need to hear. I am starting a business and it is slow going, so I was thinking of branching out a little bit in a different direction but wasn’t sure about it. “Keep throwing things at the wall and eventually something will stick” is now my new mantra. Thanks Averie!

well the real version of that saying is, keep throwin’ sh*t at the wall and sooner or later some of it will stick.
But yes, that’s all we can do in life..is just keep TRYING. Life is a numbers game in many regards. Just keep doing your thing lady!

Sometimes I tell people about what I’m working on, sometimes not. It depends on if I think the feedback will help or if it will just be a case of too many cooks in the kitchen, you know? I’m working on my syllabi right now, and I FINALLY finished one of 3 classes this morning. I didn’t get any feedback from anyone, because I’m teaching it alone and no one on campus has taught the course before. The other two classes are different, and I’m getting feedback. Its good and bad. More work, but hopefully things will be better in the end. Maybe…

I usually wait until things are done or in place before sharing with others. If things don’t work out, I’d rather not have broadcast it to everyone – I have enough anxiety/pressure on myself as it is!

Averie – I’m flattered that you thought I made my living as a photographer, but I’m an amateur. My husband has been shooting (both video and still) underwater for many years, and I am still trying to catch up with him :)

I don’t like sharing things with people until they are at least underway if not completed. I was actually a bit hurt when I shared with friends that I wanted to start my weight loss journey. One I think was trying to complement me when she said “I knew that you were serious about it when you joined a gym, because I know you hate wasting money so much that you’d stick with it.” Keep in mind that it was a good three or four months into losing weight that I joined a gym. I had already lost twenty pounds! But apparently no one actually thought I’d stick with it. And I had never dieted before, so it’s not like I was yo-yoing or anything.

I mean, I guess it worked out in the end since I have lost and kept off over 100 pounds. But I’m keeping things to myself a lot more now!
