Thursday Things

Here are this week’s Thursday Things:

1. Better Homes and Gardens interviewed me and featured me on their site

I was flattered and honored when they asked me. Never in a million years would I have guessed when I was a little girl watching my mom read her BHG magazines that they’d be asking me for an interview.

Life is full of surprises, isn’t it.

2. Although these new arrival Owl Dessert Plates are adorable, they signify autumn.

I don’t want autumn. I want summer to continue forever.

3. Smoked Coconut Cheesecake

“…perfumed with musky, flowery aromas and flavored with notes of caramel and smoke…”

I’m typically not a fan of smoked foods and up until seeing this would say absolutely no way to smoked desserts.

But I may need reconsider that position.

4. The only think I like smoked is smores. Or baked smores that you don’t require a campfire.

Peanut Butter Cocoa Krispies Smores Bars

5. I recently picked up this Amika Shampoo and Conditioner

“Amika Obliphica Balancing Shampoo is a Sea Buckthorn Berry (Obliphica) Balancing Shampoo with omega 7 + vitamin c that gently restores and nourishes for fine, medium and course hair. Silicone free, paraben free. Safe for color treated hair. The Obliphica berry, for centuries renowned for its healing powers, has an arsenal of antioxidants, vitamins, healthy fatty acids, Omega 3, 6 & 9, and the rare Omega 7 (usually only found in fish oil). These potent vitamins combined with the powerful properties of the Argan nut oil, native to Morocco, come together to form a line that replenishes, moisturizes, and brings out hairs natural balance. The Balancing Shampoo gently cleanses while infusing hair with fatty acids, proteins, anti-oxidants, and other nutrients.”

After just a couple uses my hair is shiner, stronger, and feels like it has more life in it. I don’t know if it will be my forever-and-ever shampoo and conditioner because I do like to switch things up, but I can say for now I like it.

Caveats: it doesn’t suds-up much because it’s sulfate-free so if you like really big bubbles, it may not be for you.

It has a strong fragrance; the conditioner more so than the shampoo, but the scent fades after a day or two. I only wash my hair a couple times a week, and by day 3 or 4, I’d rather my hair smell like perfume than, well, dirty hair.

6.  Nourishing Hair Mask

I have not actually used the mask because it was a little pricey at the beauty supply store, but I plan to order it online. The employees were all raving about it. It smells heavenly, sort of tropical, and if for no other reason that the scent is divine, I plan to order it.

7. If you don’t like a strong scent of pina coladas wafting through your house, then don’t make Pina Colada White Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies

One way or the other, you’ll want to either drink or eat a pina colada.

8. Does the Paleo Diet Make Any Sense?

With Full Article Here

“According to the Paleo Diet, we humans would be better off eating like we did back in the caveman days. We should eat meat (lots of meat), vegetables, and fruit; work out intensely (think running after wooly mammoths); and avoid any food that requires agriculture and civilization to produce (e.g. bread, cheese, Twinkies)…

…The whole article is interesting, but basically says that we humans are equipped with a digestive tract that evolved to deal with a leafy diet, but has since adapted to eating starchier grains. Our guts can handle pretty much anything we can throw at them (allergies aside), and there certainly isn’t any reason to suppose that we’re better off eating mostly meat…(source)”

Interesting food for thought. Pun intended.

9. Thanks for the Capresso Espresso & Cappuccino Machine Giveaway entries

10. I like everything about this Z Gallerie room

The yellow print that looks like stone, the silver mirrored piece behind the couch, the tufted bench, in chocolate, the white rug, the low and modern sectional.

People can say what they want about the theory behind the paleo diet, but I only have to listen to my body and it tells me I am healthier and happier, physically and emotionally, when eating paleo!

Thanks for the link on the paleo diet. I look forward to reading it. My sister and BIL have each been on a variation of it, and swear that they feel better than they have in years, while my husband is vegan, and also swears that he feels better than he has in years having made the switch from vegetarian to vegan. I’m not sure yet which camp I’ll fall into, other than that I tend to eat vegan/vegetarian at home. We’ll see!

That’s fantastic news about your interview Averie! With all these recipes you certainly deserve the word spread about it! My day was a little less exciting with an 11 hour drive but I did find a gorgeous patch of sunflowers near the end that brought me back to reality http://wp.me/p26wpj-pB. BTW, I took a short break to walk through a country antique store and found an iron skillet on their wall for $84 !!! I be it cost someone less than $5 when it was new…crazy. Congratulations again!

I know you love it – I have another friend who got into crossfit and the paleo diet and she is all about it! Both her and her hubs lost lots of weight, went from “average” to world-class athletes and do competitions and compare/contrast them with who they were 10 yrs ago to what they look like and can do now, and it’s just the most mind-blowing comparison. You’d never believe this was the same couple!

I’ve seen so many cute decor things lately! I’m in the process of putting together a post of things I’ve done already that are just “quickie” projects and not necessarily a full post on their own. My favorite is the mailbox that I spray painted – blue with white polka dots!

I read that paleo article a few days ago. I agree 100% with the science, but I don’t think that just because the science doesn’t back up the rationale that the paleo-supporters use, that the diet itself is bad. I mean, we don’t know what our paleo ancestors ate but does that mean that eating a mainly plant based diet with meat thrown in there is bad? No. My beef (pun intended) with it is that they tout meat as the end-all, be-all. Same with fat. It’s too rigid. LIke all diets.

That said, I think it gets the best nutritional advice out there – limit sugars and processed foods and our guts, minds, and bodies will be happier. Period.

I’m-a go read your article now. CONGRATS!!!

As a precurser, this may be too much information for some, but when I was on the Paleo diet it wreaked havoc on my digestive tract. I wasn’t using the restroom nearly as often as I was prior to giving up grains. While I am 100% behind the Paleo diet and agree that humans should try to eat foods as close to their natural state as possible, I don’t believe any diet can be one size fits all. In my case, reintroducing some grain back into my diet made me feel a million times better. It’s all about doing what works best for you. I know my digestive tract thanked me for introducing gluten again, haha!

Averie, I love your Thursday things! It’s like a little trip inside Averie’s thoughts! CONGRATS on the BHG feature. That is certainly quite an honor! I bet you were overloaded with excitement! Will that be in the printed magazine? Or online? I saw the link to it and I loved reading it about how happy it makes you to shower your hubs and Skylar with food. Food IS love, you are right. :) Those owl plates! My one friend loves cutesy owl things. She’d die for any or all of them!

That smoked coconut cheesecake sounds interesting. I obviously love my smores smoked too. The blacker the marshmallow, the better. Is that gross? I also loved smoked salmon. :)

And I need a hair mask. My hair is looking D-R-Y these days. I use leave in conditioners quite frequently… expensive ones.. and they aren’t doing the job how I want it!!

There are so many hair products that claim to have all this moisture and then, they really don’t do anything. One issues is that natural products *Can* be drying; it’s sometimes the chemcials that leave you feeling less dry but the natural products can seem drying, or are drying. It’s so hard to find one that you love. I will say this, 100% there is a Kiehl’s conditioner I have been using for 5+ years, a couple jars of it per year, it’s awesome. I would not sell you on a pricey product that doesn’t work. It does and I love it -buy it at kiehls or nordstrom and they will take it back if you don’t love it.

One thing I’ve got to say about Paleo is that I can’t see humanity being better off with an even HIGHER demand for meat. We can only chop down so many old-growth forests for animal agriculture, my friends. Before the agricultural revolution, we didn’t have over seven billion people all trying to live at once.

Smoked desserts? This is a first for me. I am curious to try it though. I will try just about anything with coconut in it (except if it has animal products haha).

My beliefs on the Paleo diet are that we are NOT cavemen. Our bodies are intelligent machines that know what they are doing and adapt to many situations. I believe the only thing that corrupts them is animal products which have shown to be linked to all types of diseases and disorders.

Congrats on the interview!! I just read it and you give a good one btw! My Thursday thing is Extra root beer float gum. It doesn’t have a really strong root beer flavor but just enough. I’m familiar with the Paleo diet and know some who follow it pretty strictly long term (and love it) and others who couldn’t stick with it. I think there are so many diets and eating styles out there and a one size fits all approach just isn’t feasible. We all have different needs, tolerances, metabolisms, and tastes when it comes to food, so experiment and find what works best.

Huge congratulations on Better Homes and Gardens! That is absolutely amazing. The Paleo Diet is certainly interesting. I don’t mind the meat, fruits, vegetables, and running, but I’m not so sure about giving up grains. The best hair product I recently discovered is Dry spray from Oribe. It makes my hair look like I just got it done at the salon. I don’t know how I lived without it so long. No more bad hair days!

    • Averie @ Averie Cooks replied: — July 27th, 2012 at 9:37 am

Oribe is what the salon uses that I go to and I bought their leave-in conditioner/shine stuff..it’s a thin creme, not a spray. It makes my hair just a little too shiny…I only wash every few days and if I was a daily or every other day washer, it would be perfect but it’s just a smidge too much. I want to try other products but they aren’t cheap as you know!

      • Laura Dembowski replied: — July 27th, 2012 at 10:37 am

It’s definitely not cheap, but this Dry product is kind of like a dry shampoo, so since you don’t wash your hair every day, you might like it. It gives body and that freshly blown out look. And it smells quite good too. I’m always looking for new hair products because my hair tends to be very flat and falls pretty much as soon as I’m done doing it :(

Hi there! Congrats on the article! I just discovered your blog and I love it! I can’t wait to borrow your ideas and get in the kitchen. I’m a bit of a blog addict – I’m constantly reading. I noticed that you’re sulfate free, so I thought I’d share that about 2 months ago I stopped using body wash, shampoo, and face cleanser. I know that sounds crazy, but I swear if you’ve ever heard of it, look it up! It is the BEST thing I’ve ever done for my hair (very soft and actually holds a style now). I work out every day, but I don’t smell bad as long as I don’t binge on junk food. I use Jojoba oil to remove my makeup and voila! I’m working on finding the time to start making my own laundry detergent and cleaning supplies. (I’m a bit of a hippie.) :) I know some ladies who’ve just done one of my above-mentioned new habits and are very happy; I encourage you to look them up!
