Heilala Gourmet Vanilla Giveaway

Heilala Vanilla (pronounced “hey-la-la”) began as an aid project in 2002 by New Zealand dairy farmer John Ross to assist a village in one of the world’s most beautiful and remote places-Vava’u Islands in the Kingdom of Tonga.

Ross and his family fell in love with the Tongan people and environment and used their horticultural background and research facilities in Tauranga, New Zealand to establish a vanilla plantation. In 2005, Heilala Vanilla was born.

Heilala Vanilla is grown in organic virgin soil on coconut husk frames, hand pollinated and dried under the Pacific sun. It is then stored at optimum conditions to ensure the development of full flavor before heading to Tauranga, New Zealand where it is used to make a range of the most exquisite, premium vanilla products for specialty retail, chefs and gourmet food manufacturers.

“The richest grade of Vanilla in the Asia Pacific region calls for lots of tender love and care. The most perfect and natural growing environment meant that we were off to a good start. Add to this our organic growing principles and you get vanilla grown in organic virgin soil, on coconut husk frames, hand pollinated and dried under the Pacific Sun, then stored at optimum conditions to ensure full flavour develops.  This is what gives our 100% Pure Heilala Vanilla (of the Bourban variety) its distinctive aroma, shine and plumpness!”

When I don’t make my own Homemade Vanilla Extract, I love using their vanilla.

The products are available at stores including Bristol Farms, Whole Foods, Willams-Sonoma, Chefshop and more.

The winner of this giveaway will win the following two items:

100 ml Heilala Vanilla Extract, $21.95 – This versatile 100% Pure Vanilla Extract is perfect for all your baking needs. Use one teaspoon in any recipe that calls for a teaspoon of vanilla essence or extract

100 ml Heilala Vanilla Award Winning Paste, $23.50 – After extensive trialling and research, Heilala Vanilla Paste is made by reintroducing Vanilla seeds to our Vanilla Extract and adding a natural seaweed thickener to produce a paste. The paste is a fantastic alternative to using a pod as it is convenient and economical in any recipe where you want to add a gourmet touch by showcasing the seeds alongside the full vanilla flavour. One teaspoon equals one vanilla bean. This 100ml jar is equivalent to approximately 20 vanilla beans!

I am a huge vanilla fan, always use extra, and some of my favorite vanilla-based recipes follow:

Homemade Vanilla Extract – Making your own vanilla saves money, is mindlessly easy, and you can keep the vanilla extract-brewing cycle going by topping off your brewing jar as vanilla is used, and from time to time swapping out the old beans for new to keep the extract flavorful. The used beans can be placed in a container of sugar for DIY Vanilla Sugar.

Homemade Vanilla Extract makes for a thoughtful gift that everyone uses, that costs you very little in terms of money on an ounce-for-ounce, gift-for-gift basis, and is virtually effortless on your part. My kind of gift.

Cinnamon Roll Coffee Cake with Cream Cheese Glaze – All the flavor of cinnamon rolls, with none of the work or downtime waiting for dough to rise. The cake is ready from start to finish in an hour, no mixer required. Vanilla is used twice, both in the batter and in the icing. Plenty of streusel topping, robust cinnamon flavor, and a favorite coffee cake

Sugar-Doodle Vanilla Cookies – A new favorite cookie that’s soft, chewy, and combines my love of sugar cookies, snickerdoodles, and vanilla all in one easy small-batch recipe

Baked Vanilla Donuts with Vanilla Glaze – Vanilla is used twice, both in the donuts and in the glaze, and if you’ve never made donuts before they’re extremely easy and fast. The batter can be baked as muffins rather than donuts if you don’t have a donut pan

Puffy Vanilla and Peanut Butter Chip Cookies – These puffy, easy, peanut buttery cookies are intensely vanilla-flavored, just the way I like things

Banana Bread with Vanilla Browned Butter Glaze – I used vanilla four ways, yes four, in this bread. No mixer is required, just one bowl, and it’s my favorite banana bread recipe of all time. It’s the jumping off recipe for all other banana-based bread and cake recipes I make

Snickerdoodle Cookie Bars with Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting – Like snickerdoodle cookies, in bar form, and so much faster and easier. Use white, red, or green frosting and let the sprinkles fly around the time of year. Vanilla is used both in the soft and chewy bars and in the tangy and sweet frosting

Caramel and Chocolate Gooey Bars (GF with Vegan adaptation) – I use vanilla twice when making these gooey, rich, easy bars. Full of caramel, chocolate, chewy oats, and vanilla. Keep the napkins handy

Homemade Peanut Butter (vegan, GF) – I add a heavy-handed stream of vanilla extract to my homemade peanut butter, which takes just 5 minutes to make. Homemade peanut butter, like vanilla, is another thing that once you start making it on your own, you’ll wonder why you haven’t been doing this your whole life because it’s so easy and ridiculously good

No-Bake Vanilla Cake Batter Truffles – Vanilla cake batter and vanilla extract are used in these rich and easy truffles, perfect this time of year to make and set out on holiday platters or give as gifts

Spiced Apple and Banana Bundt Cake with Vanilla Caramel Glaze – This is my favorite frosting of all time. It’s caramely, rich, and has an incredible depth of flavor and vanilla plays a starring role in it. The cake is good, but the vanilla-caramel glaze is heavenly

I use vanilla in everything. I prefer it to chocolate flavored things, too. The last batch of pumpkin pancakes I made were good, but I felt they were missing something. Went back to the recipe and sure enough, it didn’t call for vanilla. Made a second batch, added a 1/2 tsp or so, and voila! Best. Pancakes. Ever.

I love just the smell of vanilla. One time when I was learning to cook, I thought this stuff smells so good it must taste pretty good too, Unfortunately I found out that wasn’t true. lol! One way I enjoy using vanilla is to put it in our oatmeal in the morning with our raisin and nutmeg. It makes the oatmeal taste almost like a cookie. Yum.
