Not sure what chlorella is?  It’s algae.

Why would you want to eat algae?  Some benefits:

Fiber: One serving of Sun Chlorella contains more dietary fiber than many leading fruits and vegetables.

I used to take blue-green algae pills regularly before I got pregnant and during my pregnancy.  Like many supplements, I didn’t really perceive tons of noticeable benefit or changes, but I figured that the algae was working its magic on me internally.

And like many supplements I’ve tried over the years, I kind of forgot about algae when I finished my last bottle and never got back into the habit.  But now, I am glad to have these new algae samples to try.

And paired it with a nice big salad

Mixed green salad with vegetablesFor the dressing, I used the juice of half an orange and followed my 30 second recipe for Holiday Orange Spice Vinaigrette.   You can make the dressing even on non-holidays.  Shocker.

For dessert, I snacked on a Mounds Ball

Questions:

1. What are your thoughts on supplements?

I’ve posted before about my thoughts.  In general, I prefer a food over pills approach.  However, there are exceptions.

2. Would you ever try algae?

As I mentioned, I used to take it years ago, just ran out, and never got back into the habit but looks like I am about to get back into the habit again.

3. What have you given an “I’ll try anything once” approach to?

My list includes:

Sun Warrior Brown Rice Protein Powder

Nooch

Hemp Seeds

Stevia

Coconut Oil

Maca

Hemp Protein Powder

Dulse Flakes

Algae

Some of those items may not be considered too “out there” or “crazy” but it depends on one’s perspective, past, and exposure to non-mainstream foods/products, too.  So what isn’t too “crazy” for me may be totally far-fetched for another.  Some people don’t even know what nooch is, let alone having tried it.

I am somewhat adventurous and will try many things once.  But not everything!

Things I won’t try (again) or have tried in the past and I am not a fan of: meat products, garlic, onions, hemp protein powder, dulse flakes, durian fruit, and overcooked mushy peas.

What have you tried once?  Anything you don’t want to try once? Or won’t try again?

  1. The only “supplement” I take is a probiotic. I’m a really bad pill taker and this is the only one that I’ve been able to stick with.

    Somthing that I’ve tried once and will never try again is frog legs. BLETCH! In my defense, I was 9yrs old, in Italy, at a seaside restaurant and my Dad told me it was a sweet fish from the ocean. Once I took a bite and saw a bone I knew he was lying…that and he was laughing his ass off at my expression! Somthing I will NEVER try is game meat. I see absolutely no reason to eat a bunny, deer, moose, etc. :(

  2. I used to work in a supplement store and I swear for the four years I was there, I must’ve tried at least half the product inventory! Over the years of researching and also from personal experience, I am definitely convinced that food>pills. I do take vitamins in pill form, but not as a replacement for the nutrients that I should be getting from my diet. I just feel better and have more energy when I take my vitamins. I also love Adora disks and my fruity calcium chews that I buy from Target (makes me feel like I’m eating candy)!

    I am really picky when it comes to liquid/powder supplements but they are honestly the BEST way to get the nutrients…more absorbability! I’m super curious about your chlorella! I’ve seen it before (we sold it in the store) but I had no idea about the protein source. Awesome! I would def try it!

    I am a try anything once kind of gal for sure! I have tried so many new things since discovering blogworld! A year ago, I never would’ve thought I’d be drinking smoothies with spinach in them or oogling over tofu dishes!

  3. Sorry–one more thing: chlorella is a chelator, as you said: it helps to mobilize toxic metals from the body. So I know when I started eating it, I had to start real slow–like a half teaspoon at a time–but now I can eat it by the tablespoon no prob, and feel real good about it!

  4. Those mounds balls look yummy–and a bit like something I’ve been playing with recently. I’ll have to go back and check that post (been on the road _again_!).

    I’m with you on food over pills and I think that it’s a sign of my improving health that I seem to be less dependent on pills and powders than a year ago. That said, I do think of spirulina and chlorella as ‘foods’ rather than supps. I looked into growing my own but it’s very complicated up here. But they’ve been eaten by humans traditionally (in Mexico and I think Chad in Africa). I know you’re not a ‘protein type,’ but for a ‘protein type’ vegan they’re a very useful source of protein. Spirulina actually tastes really cheesy, especially blended up with nooch and tahini–and you’ve got to love that green mustache effect! Spirulina and pb is a pretty amazing combo, both savory and sweet.

    You don’t like durian? Man I love that stuff. I just tried tocotrienols for the first time today–another of those ‘superfoods’–will post thoughts soon.
