Bought a Bowflex, Home Gym Set Up & Purchases, How Much Research Do You Do?, Full Moon Effects

Hi Everyone!  How was your weekend?  I hope you enjoyed yourself and got in some relaxation and mellow times with your friends and loved ones.  My weekend was a blur.  It went by so fast, but they always do!  Today I ran around to Target, the grocery store, but I didn’t have to go to the gymI just went down to the garage.  And it was glorious to work out at home!

As I mentioned yesterday, I purchased something for my garage home gym over the weekend: A Bowflex! 

I decided a whopping 4 days ago I was going to create a home gymAnd I did it!

Here’s my “Gym”

There are a zillion versions of Bowflexes on the market.  I found mine, The Bowflex Ultimate, on Craigslist and I got a stellar deal on it.

With doing the research on home gyms and also Bowflexes, I decided that I could drive myself crazy and belabor it, or, I could get on with the business of getting my gym set up, make a decision and just buy something.  I chose the later option. 

The guy who was selling it on Craigslist drove it to my house in his truck, unloaded it, set it up, and showed me how to use it.  Hey, I have no shame in prancing around in a sports bra and flashing big smiles if it’s going to help my cause..haha!

Grab these cables and start rowing.  Note the bench against the wall that is removable to allow for seated rowing.

Yes, it’s a little overwhelming with all the pulleys and cables, and it does take a minute or so to re-configure the cables and pulleys when changing exercises, but I already am trying to group similar exercises together to save time.   I think I’ll have the hang of it in no time and I am thrilled to not have to go to the gym 6 days a week.  Not sure if I will quit my gym entirely, but this will hopefully replace the majority of my gym trips. 

And if I end up hating it, I kid you not, this whole unit was less than the price of a pair of designer jeans.  And a hundred bucks less than the Garmin I returned.   Scott was like, babe, you can’t go wrong, just get it.  So I did.  And I am so happy! 

I also picked up a pair of 12 Pound Neoprene Dumbbells

Weights are soooo expensive and this was my splurge purchase.  $45 bucks for the pair, on sale.  Wow.  Good thing I don’t need to buy a set of free weights!  I would love one, but they’re not in the budget right now.  There are lots on Craigslist but they are rusted out and dirty iron weights so I am just playing the free weights by ear til the right thing comes along.

I also bought two ankle bracelets to hook up the Bowflex.

The Bowflex came with one foot strap but it’s a little flimsy and I need to strap up properly so I can do my cable kickbacks because…
I’m working on making my butt bigger!  I think the ankle bracelets and the Bowflex will be perfect!
Lastly, I put my Bose iPod dock to good use and set it up in the garage.  I never listened to my iPod at the gym because I never liked any of the armstrap/iPod holsters on the market and I didn’t want cords dangling everywhere.  Don’t have to worry about that now since I can just Dock It!  Not to  mention, I can blast whatever I want and don’t have to listen to whatever satellite channel the gym is playing that day.

All in all, I am super happy about everything and have done it all (not counting the Bose which I already have) for about $300.  Yes, seriously, the best money I have spent in a long time!

From Yesterday…
You all love your pumpkin, don’t you!  The Pumpkin Honey Tofu was popular!

And like I mentioned, between freezing/thawing the tofu and then pressing it, it got so spongey that it was almost like bread.  Very Pumpkin bread-esque!

It was interesting to hear everyone’s take on jobs, dream jobs, and staying in jobs solely for the money even if you otherwise hated it.  Most of you said that you wouldn’t stay in a job just for the money.   However, if that’s the case, then why does it seem that so many Americans are miserable at their jobs?  It seems that most people, even though they wish things were different, do suck it up and stick it out even if they aren’t thrilled about their job.

It’s interesting what we would do in theory and how that interfaces with the realities of life when we are really in various situations.  I think it’s one of those things that until you’re really in the situation, it’s hard to pre-formulate opinions or predict how you would act.  Bills, kids, emergencies, life, it’s all so hard to say how this effects whether we stay at a certain job or not. 

There is of course a difference between being kinda “blah” about your job vs. crying every day before work.  No two situations are the same and it’s interesting talking about this.  So many of you told me you are working jobs you don’t really like.  And some of your said you hate your job.   For everyone who’s working a job they feel they have to, I wish you all the best of luck finding something that will make you happier!

As for Dream Jobs, some of you said you couldn’t possibly pick one job and you have no idea what your dream job is, but many of you want to do something in the holistic/health counseling arena, something to do with helping people make better food choices, owning a vegan/healthy food bakery or restaurant, and being a writer.  These jobs and roles came up, lots. 

Moving on…
Is anyone experiencing any effects from the Full Moon today?   During a Full Moon, the world is filled with excess prana, or life force energy.   Technological or mechanical glitches are notorious during Full Moons.   Computer problems, car problems, appliances breaking.  This month’s full moon my ice maker in my fridge broke and the next month my microwave broke!

1. Is anyone experiencing any Full Moon Effects?  
I have been sleeping less than usual and am on the go-go-go mode with tons of energy.  I guess that’s good but it’s a bit of a running around like a chicken with my head cut off energy rather than really grounded energy.  I’ll take it, though!

2. Have you ever tried a Bowflex?  Would you ever get one?  Do you know anyone who has one?  Do they like it, and if not, why?  Christine told me she has a Bowflex and likes it.  Yay for good feedback!

Before yesterday, I had never, ever tried one.  Ever.  I bought this thing sight unseen other than a few pictures I saw on CL and based on Scott telling me he tried one and almost bought one 15 years ago.  The ability to do many different exercises, save on space (and it has a removable leg curl feature not photographed), and basically buy one thing that can do tons was important to me.  Rowing, Dead Lifts, Squats, and Tricep Pulldown things were all important to me and most of the traditional “pumping iron” type units couldn’t give me the variety I wanted which is why I went with the Bowflex.  After my 48 whole hours of research! 

3. How much research do you do before you buy something or choose something?
I spent months researching my Garmin and 2 days researching the Bowflex.  I spent years researching my Vitamix but bought my house in Phoenix after a weekend trip and if you’re even thinking of a Vita, get it.  Best money I’ve ever spent.  Some things I research a ton, other things, I jump right in.  I am very dichotomous that way.  Once I have a bee up my butt to do something, I hate to wait and just want to do it!  A little impulsive.   I also have the ability to google things ad nauseum and drive myself crazy on how much I research other things.
How do you approach researching things?

4.  Any exciting or fun stories from the weekend?  Best thing you ate or did?

5. Something that made you smile today?
Me = walking to my garage to work out, not having to schlep to the gym!  Oh, it felt pretty awesome!

  1. Have you had any problems with the adjustable squat strap coming undone when you go to lift? I just got the Bowflex Ultimate on CL this weekend and I’m still trying to figure out how to get the squat bar with the adjustable straps to work correctly.

    Any tips and/or photos of how you use it would be super helpful :)
