Best Ever Brownies Made with Chocolate Chips

I have no idea why these are called “boyfriend brownies,” but I came across this chocolate chip brownie recipe recently. Between the two bags of chocolate chips in the recipe and the clever name, I knew I had to give the recipe a try.

These chocolate chip brownies are fudgy in the center with chewy edges and are studded with plenty chocolate chips. They are not quite as fudgy as some of my other brownie recipes, such as Turtle Brownies, Loaded Oreo Cream Cheese Brownies, or German Chocolate Brownies, but they are by no means cakey.

Those other brownie recipes are closer to eating straight up fudge, whereas this brownie recipe using chocolate chips is not quite to that extreme. They are quite thick and have a crackly top which is always a bonus for me.

You get a bit of texture from chocolate chips that are stirred into the batter.

Ingredients in Chocolate Chip Brownies 

To make this easy brownie recipe with chocolate chips, you’ll need:

  • Unsalted butter  
  • Granulated sugar
  • Water
  • Chocolate chips 
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla extract
  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking soda 
  • Salt

How to Make Chocolate Chip Brownies

Making brownies with chocolate chips is so quick and easy! Chocolate chips are melted and stirred into the batter, and also folded in whole to add texture.

Here’s an overview of how the brownies are made:

  1. Melt together butter, sugar, and water. Stir in a bag of chocolate chips until they melt.
  2. Add eggs, flour, and stir in another bag of (whole, unmelted) chocolate chips before baking the brownies. 
  3. Turn the brownie batter into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.

Recipe Tips

Instead of water, you can use coffee if you want to enhance and complement the chocolate flavor even more. 

I recommend underbaking these homemade brownies with chocolate chips by just a touch because gooey and a fudgy reigns supreme for me when it comes to brownies. The longer you bake or overbake them, the faster and more prone to drying out in the subsequent days they will be.

If you want to slice the brownies neatly, let them cool for 30 minutes to an hour before slicing them. 

If you don’t care about neatness, I would dig into the chocolate chip brownies as soon as they are sufficiently cool and top them with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. There’s nothing better than warm brownies with ice cream.

Can I Halve This Recipe? 

Most likely, yes. I imagine you’d need to halve the ingredients list and simply bake in an 8×8-inch pan. 

How Long Do Brownies Last? 

These chocolate chip brownies will keep airtight at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Can I make the brownies with another type of chocolate chips?

Yes! I used semi-sweet chocolate chips because I like my brownies richer rather than sweeter. However, milk or dark chocolate chips (or a mix!) can be used. I don’t recommend melting white chocolate chips to use in the brownie batter since it’s prone to seizing up. You’d be fine to fold whole white chocolate chips into the batter though.

Can I make the brownies using regular chocolate bars?

Of course, you’re welcome to chop up 24 ounces of chocolate bars if that’s what you have on hand. I simply used chocolate chips for convenience!

Chocolate Chip Brownies

Ingredients  

  • cup unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup water or coffee
  • two 12-ounce bags semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 325F, line a 9×13-inch pan with aluminum foil for easier cleanup, and spray with cooking spray; set aside.
  • To a medium saucepan, add the butter, sugar, water or coffee, and bring to a simmer over medium heat, whisking nearly continuously until butter has melted and sugar has dissolved (it’s okay if it’s still slightly grainy).
  • Turn off the heat, add 12 ounces of chocolate chips, and whisk to combine until chips have melted. Transfer the mixture into a large mixing bowl.
  • Add the eggs, vanilla, and whisk vigorously to combine until smooth and shiny.
  • Add the flour, baking soda, salt, and gently stir to combine; don’t overmix.
  • Add the remaining 12 ounces of chocolate chips and stir to combine.
  • Turn batter out into the prepared pan and bake for about 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs but no batter; don’t overbake because I think the brownies are better when fudgier and not overbaked an drier.
  • Allow the brownies to cool for at least 30 to 60 minutes before slicing and serving if you want to slice them neatly.

    I can see why you had to adapt the AllRecipes brownie recipe. They are usually reliable, but definitely needed your common sense. Now I have to go out and buy a couple bags of chocolate chips. I am giving you five stars before I do the baking simply on the basis of the wonderful photography. Are you your own photographer or does someone else do the magic?

    I can see why you had to adapt the AllRecipes brownie recipe. They are usually reliable, but definitely needed your common sense. Now I have to go out and buy a couple bags of chocolate chips. I am giving you five stars before I do the baking simply on the basis of the wonderful photography. Are you your own photographer or does someone else do the magic?

    Made these once already and am in the process of making them again right now. They came out perfectly fudgy and chewy and totally hit the spot to cure my brownie craving. I normally always keep store bought brownie mix on hand but now there won’t be a need. I added pecans and switched the water for coffee as suggested and the whole family ate them up. Thank you so much for such a great recipe
