New Macbook, Making Bigger Ticket Purchases on Ebay or Craiglist, Gum Review

Hi Friends!  How has your weekend been?  What have you been up to?  I worked and glad I’m done with that now for a few days.  And I spent time with my family, lifted, went on some nice walks, and dealt with major Craigslist drama.

In the end, it worked out but this is what I had to go through:

Weed through a jillion Craigslist and Ebay ads for a Macbook for weeks

Find one that looks great and have tons of email and text correspondence with a lady and we were all set to meet Saturday afternoon.  Even joked with her on text that CL is full of fruits & nuts, flakes & whackjobs.  She concurred.  Oh, the irony of that.

Wait around all day Saturday for her to tell me she had a flat tire and could we meet Sunday

Wait around most of the day Sunday for her and she’s a no show, and stopped answering emails, calls, or texts

Get really pissed off because I just want a damn computer.  Today.

Find a great one that popped onto Craigslist this morning.

Make an appointment to meet the guy at 3pm at a Starbucks out in BFE

He shows up.  At 4:45pm, nearly 2 hours late.  As I was cooling my heels with overpriced drip coffee with grounds in it

Nothing like drinking coffee grounds.  Mmm, good.  See This Post about why I almost Never buy Starbucks.  Today’s drink re-inforced that.

The guy claimed he was wiping off his data and wiped off the volume control so he had to call Applecare to get it put back on which is why he was so late

Finally at 5pm, after spending what felt like most of my weekend trying to get a macbook, I got it!

And here’s the new Macbook!  Well, it’s new to me but not brand new.

It’s 2.5 months old and I found it on Craigslist.  There are so many hundreds of Macbooks for sale on the San Diego CL, more on the Orange County Craigslist, and the L.A. Craigslist practically has thousands.  And then there’s ebay.   Seems everyone wants to upgrade to the 15 inch Macbooks or the Macbook Pros.  I just need it for my Aruba trip and to have as a backup computer, so I don’t need it super pimp or anything.

I felt I could get better deals by buying locally and not paying for shipping and insurance from ebay.  Plus, it was nice to see, in person, what I was buying before I bought it.

It’s in mint condition, and has the whole Microsoft Office Package on it.  And it still is under warranty for another 9.5 months.

I got a great deal on it, basically just over half of what I would have had to pay if I were to buy a new one, pay tax, and by the Microsoft package.  It’s like driving a car brand new off the lot, or letting someone else put the first 10 months or 10,000 miles on it, and then buying it.  I feel you get the best of both worlds; they suffer the hardest effects of the financial depreciation but the item itself is still in fabulous condition.

If anyone needs recommendations for cheaper laptops, notebooks, macbooks, and such, this post and the comments had a ton of great recommendations from fellow readers when I had originally solicited your advice and suggestions.

From yesterday’s post about Remembering 9/11, it was wonderful to hear all of your stories, thoughts, memories and experiences.  Some of you feel you are forever changed, some of you live in fear, but many of you seem to carry on, live your life, and go about your business.  That doesn’t mean the day and the event didn’t effect you, but you don’t dwell on it.  If I were to paraphrase, that’s the gist I got from everyone.

Thanks to everyone who commented and told me their thoughts, including thoughts on airport security and air travel, too.  Most of you chimed in that you thought airport “security” was a joke, too.  Taking my shoes off and letting them test my pumped breastmilk and rifling through my carryon bag inspecting my tampons is not going to protect planes from being blown up, but that’s just my thoughts, of course.  Many of you, like Katie and Ilana, concur!

Thanks for the compliments on the Pictures I posted of Skylar and I!

To those of you who noticed, yes her hair is really long and both she and her hair seem to grow like weeds lately!

Oh and I also picked up two new packages of gum

The key lime is fabulous!!! The mint chocolate chip tastes sort of like standard “mint gum” after the first 30 seconds.  But the key lime rocks.  I don’t even really like “lime-flavored” things that much (love key lime pie, just not “lime-flavored” foods usually) but the gum is stellar.

Dessert: No-Bake Vegan Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Balls (with a High Protein Option)
Super easy, one bowl and a spoon, 5 minutes to stir and you’re done.  And you can substitute peanut flour if you’d like.  I know lots of people like Julie and Sarena are loving their peanut flour!

1.  Best thing you’ve done or ate over the weekend?
Finally getting my Macbook, despite all the annoyances, is the best thing!

2. What’s the best deal you’ve ever found on Craigslist or Ebay?
I’ve bought things like random parts for breastpumps, cell phone cases and covers, a Tiffany-style lamp, books, and gosh, all kinds of stuff.  I buy on CL or Ebay when it seems to save me the most money, compared to buying on Amazon or from a retail store.

3. Would you ever make a bigger-ticket purchase, such as electronics, jewelry, or even a car from someone on CL or Ebay?  Why or why not?  What items would you feel comfortable buying?
I have to say, it does make me a little nervous to have just plunked down quite a bit of cold hard cash to a stranger and buying a used computer, but the machine is covered under warranty, it’s a Mac and shouldn’t be prone to breaking anyway, and if it does, well, then it does.

What can I do about it if something does go wrong with it and it’s not covered under the warranty?  Nothing and I guess I’m out the money.  So the thought that it “could” break or something “could” go wrong in the future, didn’t stop me from getting a good deal on something in the present.

About 6 years ago I also bought a canary yellow diamond from some diamond dealers in New York via the internet and mail.  It was a 5 figure purchase, and I love it, and it was return-able if need be, but the minute I saw my diamond in person, no way I was sending it back!   I of course researched the purchase ad nauseum and looked at scads of pictures before I decided that was the one I wanted.  And had I not liked it, they would have shipped me another one to look at.

4. Have you ever tried to buy or sell anything on Craigslist or in the “used marketplace” in general?  Do you think that it’s flooded with it’s fair share of flakes, whacks, fruits, nuts, jokers, and weirdos?
Me = YES!

5. Tried any new gum flavors lately that rock your socks off?
The key lime for me!

Have a great night and good luck powering through your Monday everyone!  I am off to catch up on all the housework and chores that still haven’t gotten done yet.   And maybe something fun later on.  We shall see if that pans out…
