Rain Damage, Heater was Out, Mother Nature’s Power

Hi Friends!  How was your first day back at work or school on the first Monday in 2011?

My day was eventful.  It seems I can’t avoid the rain.

The rain got me in Aruba for most of the month of December when we were there.  It rained tons and flooded there

And I never blogged about this, but we had a hole in our ceiling in Aruba and spend thousands of dollars on a roof and ceiling repair when we were down there.

That’s a big hole in the ceiling on our front patio from the rain

We’ve had lots of rain in Southern California in December, too.  So much so that our roof here started leaking yesterday because of all the rain.  And the ceiling gave way.

I wished I had snapped some photos with the dry wall hanging down and a huge hole in the ceiling but the workmen beat me to it and patched it up, a bit.

My West Elm furniture got leaked on.   Note hole in ceiling directly over chair.

And the towels on the floor.  Towels and more towels.  And more and more laundry.

Thankfully I paid for waterproofing for this furniture and so there isn’t horrible damage, but I wouldn’t advise having the ceiling collapse and dry wall, plaster, and dirty rain water cover your 18-month old furniture.

If I ever hear anyone utter, “Oh, but we need the rain” I think I will slap them.

And on other matters, we have been without heat in our house for the past week.  So although it’s not “freezing here”, it is damn cold at night when the house is in the low 60s.

Due to some scheduling issues and repairs that had to be done to the heater, the heater is finally working.

So now we will be toasty and hopefully dry.

From my last post about Energy or Sleep Supplements, it was interesting to hear your take on them and if you’ve ever used either and whether you like them or not.  It seems lots of you have had trouble sleeping and have tried various supplements but many of you mentioned melatonin working for you.  Thanks for all the feedback and comments on that post.

I’d like to wash away the rain and cold weather with a shot of this in my coffee

But since I have to work, I’ll settle for Chocolate:

1. How was your first day back at work or school in 2011?

2. Have you ever had property damage or been a victim of a natural disaster, i.e. hurricane, fires, floods, snow damage, etc?
I posted over the summer, right after we moved into our current place, that there was a decent-sized earthquake in San Diego

I was sitting at my desk and everything started shaking

In that post I talked about Mother Nature and that she’s nothing to fool around with!  Everything from the Ocean and Scuba Diving scares to the San Diego fires of 2007 where we were 2 miles from the fire line and almost lost everything to earthquakes.

Which brings us to rain and floods and cold weather and no heat.  It’s amazing how powerful Mother Nature is and just when you think you’ve got a handle on life, Mother Nature sends a few curve balls in.  Because when your house floods or burns down Mother Nature is in control of life that day.  Not you.

Not having heat the past week and experiencing water damage from all the rain has reminded me to keep life in perspective and don’t sweat the small stuff.  Because there’s big stuff to sweat sometimes.

Thankfully I did get a 20 minute at-home workout in, because working out helps me deal with stress and chaos around me.

3. Something that has made you smile today?
Getting the heat going and the water cleaned up for me!

And a reminder to keep life in perspective and just go with the flow.  Don’t stress because that’s not going to help, anyway.  So just smile and laugh about it.  Which is what I’ve done.

See you later!
