The Tall & Short Of It

TGIF!  What a whirlwind week!  Glad it’s over. Time to hopefully recharge my batteries a bit this weekend.

Last week I took Skylar to the doctor for her 4 year old checkup.  Even though we celebrated her birthday a few weeks back, this was the soonest they could get us in.

Her checkup report card?

She’s perfectly healthy, doing wonderfully, thriving, and everything looks perfect and on track.  I didn’t need a doctor to tell me that, but hey, nice to know an unbiased professional validated what my mommy intuition already knew.

Practicing flying like a bird. She has energy to spare.  And then some.

She is also really tall and came in at the 95th percentile.  Another thing I already knew and didn’t need a chart to validate is that she’s very tall.

Not a big surprise that she’s really tall because I am a little over 5’10”.  Growing up, I was always in the 95-100th percentile for height, too.  The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

I used to be taller than all the girls.  And the boys. Not really that “great” when you’re 13.  But I love being tall now!

I hope Skylar embraces her height because I have a feeling she will be a tall adult, too.

Time to eat!

Make your weekend easy with something that makes planned leftovers.  Cook once, eat twice with Vegan “Bean & Lentil” Sloppy Joes.

Or maybe Mango Balsamic Rice with Mixed Vegetables & Garbanzos is more your speed

No matter what, make sure you have dessert ready for the weekend!

Try No-Bake Chocolate, Chia, & Oat Bars (Vegan, GF) and topped with Powdered Sugar

An old, cringe-worthy photo but hey, looks aren’t everything. Taste is where it’s at.  And these are tasty and take about 5 minutes to make.

From my last post about Free Grocery Money, it was fun to hear what you’d buy with $25 or what usually comprises your shopping orders.

Questions:

1. Were you tall, average, or short for height when growing up?  Has that changed or did the pattern hold into adulthood?

I was always tall, still am.

2. Do you like your height?

I used to hate being taller than everyone.  I didn’t want to be short, but I wanted to be more average.

Also, there is something about being considered “petite” that I think would be fun.  Maybe not forever, but if I could “sample” being petite, I would.

No one ever looks at me and uses the word petite.  Sometimes (frequently) people say things like, “Boy you’re big!”   I am tall, yes.  But I don’t consider myself to be “big”.   The labels that others place on us and that we in turn place on ourselves are so powerful.  But that’s a whole other post.

As an adult, I do embrace my height and wear heels.  As long as I am already tall, I may as well be well into the 6’2″+ range with heels.   What can I say, I have never been average.

3. If you could pick what you think would be the perfect height, what would you pick?

I will go with what I am 5’10”.  How’s that for embracing the hand I was given and self-acceptance.

Enjoy your weekend!

  1. I’m a little under 5’8″ but I stopped growing pretty early on. I was always super tall (and big!) throughout my childhood, but most people caught up to me in junior high and high school, but I’m still taller than all of my girlfriends. I used to want to be short and petite, two things I’ll never be, but now I love my height and my bone structure and I’d never want to change. Also, I’m almost the shortest one in my family. My 11-year-old sister is the only one shorter, but she’s taller than I was at that age and I’m already getting her hand-me-up shoes. Looks like I’m going to be the runt.

  2. im a shortie! so is my mom so I guess the apple dpesnt fall far from the tree over here either! I do like my height because I LOVE heels and i can wear 4 or 5 inch heels and still not tower over others! Jason is 5’8″ so I just neve wear heels that make me taller than him LOL

  3. Leave all the afternoon for exercise and recreation, which are as necessary as reading. I will rather say more necessary because health is worth more than learning.
There is no kind of dishonesty into which otherwise good people more easily and frequently fall than that of defrauding the government.

  4. Yay for a good checkup! She is just getting more and more beautiful. Her smile is going to be a heartbreaker for sure. ;) I am on the shorter side- 5, 3. I would love to add a few inches…it would definitely make jean shopping a bit easier! But we are all given what we are given and I’m okay with that. I’m still gonna rock it! :)

  5. Pryce is in the 95th percentile too! Everybody is always shocked that he’s 3 years old. I’m 5’8″ and always had to wear flats to the school dances/formals so I wouldn’t be taller than the boys. Flats just don’t look that great with a fancy dress! :-)

  6. Haha! Height has always been a subject of conversation with me. I’m not quite 5’2″. I was among the tallest couple girls in grade 6-ish and then I stopped growing. I actually enjoy being short or “petite”. It sucks for finding clothes sometimes, usually I have to hem pants, but other than that I love being short. My little siblings(in-law) bug me about being so short because they’re 5+ years younger than me and they’re all taller. I love it though :D

  7. Skylar is really cute! My little girl is gonna be tall too! Her daddy is about 6’2″ but I am 5’3 1/2″ (gotta add the half, haha!). I like my height though.

Your pics, by the way, with the new camera really are great! Makes me want to get a new camera. Is it foolproof? I’m not great with reading huge camera instruction manuals.

    1. Omg FAR FROM FOOLPROOF! I take 200 pics a day, every day. I am learning as I go. Practice. But no, NOT foolproof! What you see here is not an accident. It’s the result of me taking a boatload of pics and spending tons of time learning :)

  8. Those bake once eat twice beans look DELICIOUS :) Yum!

And I completely agree that embracing what you are given is really important! I am 5 foot 5 inches and I love every moment of it!

  9. I’ve always been “small”. Growing up I was more “average” for my height, but I was always very skinny. Now I’m more in the “petite” range at around 5’3″/5’4″. I like being “small” and being able to fit into things (small spaces, squeeze between things & having size 4 UK or 6 US shoes – usually the size on display – is fun too!)
Sometimes I want to be really very tall…just, as you say, to “try it out”…but I’m pretty content with my height :)
I’m 1/2 Filipina & in the Philippines I’m actually considered “tall” and when I visit certain countries like Japan I’d be on the “tall” side so I feel that I get the best of both worlds :)
The one thing I don’t like as much about being “small” is 5lbs on me can make such a difference, so I can go from being “thin” to “chubby” so quickly :S

  10. Haha, Skylar is a gem, and getting bigger, as always.

I have big feet and hands, but I am well smaller than you – I even have big knees and elbows, and always presumed I would get taller since everyone in my family is above even your height…I look a leeetle bit like a puppy that never “filled out”, haha…I didn’t even realise I wasn’t going to get any bigger until I was maybe twentyseven and still smaller than my mum – my NEPHEW has outgrown me! I’m a midget in my own family, haha! Sure I’d love to sample being something else – like having small feet so I could wear bright sneakers! – but since that’s not on the menu I’m fine as is :-)

Have some nice R&R over the w-e!

  11. skylar is so sweet! she’s growing to be a pretty young girl. my how time flies.

i was average height until middle school when bam! i shot up. i was so tall and lanky and absolutely hated it. buying clothes was torture. all the adults would tell me i’d appreciate it someday, and i do. i can reach the tallest shelves and can’t even tell you how many times i’ve helped short little ladies at the supermarket.=) cheers to being giraffes!=)

  12. Well I’m glad Skylar is healthy and happy — you can see that from the photos!

I am 5’8 which isn’t super tall, but somehow when I was in grade school and high school I was one of the tallest girls! I wasn’t uncomfortable being taller, I was more uncomfortable when I was around really short, petite girls because I felt like a giant!

And yes, you are tall Averie, but BIG? No way. You are tall and slim.

My perfect height? I have no idea. But I like how I am now!

  13. I am 5’2″ on a good day. I wish I was a little taller, but really it doesn’t matter. I just wish a had long legs…probably because I don’t (the grass is always greener, right?). I hope you have a great weekend Averie!
