To Unpack or Not

Well it’s been a busy Monday.  Aren’t they all.

I can’t believe that one week ago today, I was flying home from Mexico City and was in the airport blogging.

But that feels like ancient history.

So does the move into our new house that we did last week.

Today I had a few odds and ends that I needed to unpack like all my cookbooks (I have a cookbook review post with a brief review of each of these books)…

Those are just a few of my cookbooks.  There’s at least 5x more not shown.  Not exaggerating.

…But I never got to unpacking them.  I almost don’t even care.  That sounds awful but I don’t use cookbooks very often!

Everything is either stored in my head or I find more inspiration from blog and internet reading and websurfing than from books.

I did go to the post office and mail off a package and had to figure out what’s going on with my mail and had to sure it’s being forwarded since I haven’t received any mail at my new house yet.  It just takes time though.

My post office is always a zoo.  No matter day of the year, time of day, there is always a line.  I try to avoid the place like the plague because of that.

I also had to hit up the bank

And I did it all in horrible weather.

I wrote a few blog posts (including writing a recipe post so I don’t forget what I used and did), edited some photos, did change of addresses online with various companies but had to make phone calls to a few other companies and service providers.  Exciting stuff.

Yesterday I went for a run and snapped this picture with my iPhone camera

It reminds me of how pretty nature is.  I love purple so much and nature makes the prettiest shades of purple, doesn’t she?

I am glad you liked the Flourless Peanut Butter Cookies

I got yes’es from Foodgawker and Tasteologie which made me happy!

Make them.  They only have 5 ingredients, are naturally gluten free, but they are full-throttle, full-on peanut butter flavor.  Which I loved!

It was fun to hear if you’ve ever been a part of a Secret Recipe Exchange or Secret Santa type exchange.  And many of you have.  With some interesting items and gifts to show for it!  I have loved my first month in the Secret Recipe Club and plan to do it again next month!

The winner of the Summer In a Box Giveaway is:

Marcia @Frugal Healthy Simple July 15, 2011

Summer means to me: swimming in the frigid Pacific! Wetsuit of course. This summer is at least 5 degrees warmer than last!

Congrats, Marcia!

1. When you move into a new place, how long does it take you to unpack?

I know some people say it takes them weeks, months, and even years to fully unpack.  I am not one of those people.

I am the type of person who will stay awake for 36 hours straight if it means I get unpacked and put everything in its spot and place.   Pre-moving helped immensely with this and although not all my moves have I been able to pre-move things in, when I have been able to, it’s a lifesaver.

I am also the person who washes dishes at 3am after a party to make sure I don’t wakeup to a messy kitchen and a sinkful of dishes.

And I am the type of person who goes grocery shopping after being back on U.S. soil for one hour or the person who hangs curtains and lives at BB&B for days following a move.

But back to the unpacking, I almost have anxiety if I am not unpacked so I do it all as soon as I can!

2. Are there things you moved that you never end up unpacking?  Or things you moved that you’re wondering why you brought it with rather than donating or trashing it?

I always wonder this as I re-move and unpack shoes that I haven’t worn since our last move.  Or the move before that.

Same with kitchen items and clothes.  It’s like, why am I saving this?

Sentimental value is great and all but there comes a time when I just want to give away everything that I haven’t used or worn in the past 3 to 6 months.  <– Usually I use the 1 year rule but even that seems a bit long lately.

We all have so much stuff that we don’t need.  And it’s just more to take up space and more to unpack and the chances of using said items seem to go down and down as time passes.

I am a huge, huge donater.  I donated many carloads of possessions just before this move but could have donated even more.

But it seems like one day I will want those cookbooks, well at least a handful of them are gems, so for now they’re all in a box waiting for me to get a burst of energy.  And a place to put them.

  2. When we moved back from the USA we had 90% of our stuff in storage for a year while we stayed with family. After getting our own place and moving everything, we realised we hadn’t missed 50% of the stuff and donated all of it rather then unpacking it and having to move it again next time.

  3. I’ve stopped unpacking childhood nostalgia. But I don’t want to get rid of it. So it just moves around with me, still boxed,

  4. Well considering I have lived in this apartment for over three years and have never fully unpacked, I’d say that’s the most! It was supposed to be temporary and it just keeps getting pushed longer and longer. Thankfully the stuff is just some pictures and decorations that I can live without.

The post office near me is always like that; a complete zoo. In fact, I tend to drive out to one that is about 15 minutes away just so that I can get things done faster. But what’s funnier is the DMV. The one in my town is always at least an 90-120 minutes of waiting. So I drive to one that is half an hour away, and even with drive it’s so much faster. The longest I’ve had to wait there is 10 minutes. Seriously, I don’t care how far away it is. I hate waiting!

  5. I am the unpacking-not-matter-what-time-it-is-person, too. I can´t sleep when it´s untidy.
And yes, I have a few things that I actually do not need and should donate or sell, but when I was moving the last time, I did not bring the things INTO our flat, but stored them in our cellar, which is a huge progress, I think :D

  6. I’m the 3am dishwasher!!! I remember a few years ago when I had a party and stayed up till around 3am doing THREE sinkfulls of dishes because I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep with all the dirty dishes, pots, pans, etc in the kitchen. I also remember feeling quite accomplished when it was done :)

  7. I’m currently moving. I HOPE to be fully unpacked and organized within a week. Decorating will take longer.

  8. I am crazy and unpack everything the first day that I move in.

When the hubby and I moved out of our parent’s homes and into our first place together three days before our wedding. It was crazy! The day that the movers came, the hubby was at work, and I had all the furniture put together, and the entire house unpacked to surprise him when he got home from work and walked into our first home together for the first time.

  9. The last time we moved we rented a bin and tossed SO. MUCH. STUFF! I didn’t want to take unused crap along with us!
