Here’s your chance to win a digital kitchen scale


In many other countries ingredients used in cooking and baking are weighed because 50 grams of all-purpose flour is always 50 grams of flour.

However, depending on how you measure it in a measuring cup, what you think is 1/2 cup flour one is actually 1/2 cup minus a tablespoon on the day you’re in a hurry and 1/2 cup plus one tablespoon on the day you didn’t level off your measuring cup with a knife blade. These subtleties can adversely effect baking results.

You wouldn’t want to incorrectly measure the flour on a batch of cookies and mess those up. The horrors.

There’s also the issue of portion sizes and weighing food and many people find scales helpful for that.

  1. I want a scale so badly! I am trying to get better at baking, and I know that having a scale is essential for getting precise results. I would use my new scale to bake up a storm! (And then I would definitely need to use slimkicker!)

  3. If I had a food scale, life would be much easier. I’m on weight watchers and it’s hard to determine how many ounces a food item is just by looking at it!

  4. That Ozeri would be a huge improvement from the dial scale I’m using now, love the wide range and .05oz increments! I paid $5.19 for my current scale at Target and although it’s perfect for traveling since it’s so small and the weighing tray is actually a box that can hold the scale, the 1lb capacity and 5g increments aren’t great for certain recipes.

  6. Ooh, I think the “Exercise before facebook” challenge is a great idea! I’m not really all that attached to it, but I automatically gravitate there whenever I open my laptop!

  7. I have a cookbook that is all by weight so I would use this often! Plus to bake because I know it is the absolute most accurate way to do so!

    I would really love to win the scale. Over the last year I was diagnosed as hypothyroid and put on 20lbs. I’m a 28 yr old woman and I feel like my young adulthood has gone out the window. My thyroid numbers are improving and I’m starting weightlifting and am determined to get my body back. I struggle financially due to a lack of health insurance but have chosen to invest in whole foods and my family helped me afford a gym membership. I’m so lucky to have their support. Anyways, I’ve just started tracking my food intake and need a scale for accuracy. Cups and spoons don’t cut it exactly. Thank you for your wonderful blog. It always puts a smile on my face.

  10. My kitchen scale is on it’s last leg! It helps me with portion control, but especially with baking. So much more accurate!

    I have been a vegan vegetarian for most of my life, and recently I have found pleasure in cooking and finding recipes that have been ‘healthier’ for my body.   14. I would LOVE a food scale. I think it would give my baking the edge it needs (sometimes I’m lazy and scoop my flour, etc.) and it would also provide a great reality check in terms of portions, etc.

  18. OOOh, thanks for the chance! I actually started using slimkicker as a beta tester, but I had started weight watchers at the same time and it was just too much to do. I already do entirely too many social media things ( as you can tell by my pinterest use and blog comments! ) so I kind of quit using it.

    The challenge I really liked was to not eat snacks after dinner. I reallllllllly need to do that. :)

  22. I used to have a little cheap-o ghetto kitchen scale with a cup on a balance-type thing but the cup wouldn’t stay on the scale and the scale wouldn’t stay true-to-weight, so I chunked it. I would use it for baking since I am rekindling a love of bread-baking!

  41. I would love a scale to measure cheese! 30 grams is a serving, the equivalent of a few dice, but who has dice around? I find it to be the most annoying thing and I never know if I’m eating one serving or 3 servings.

  52. I used to use a food scale, but it was not digital and not very accurate, so it is collecting dust somewhere in my kitchen.

  55. I use a food scale to measure my flours! It somehow makes all of my cookies come out so much more chewy and gooey ‘just right’ in my opinion!
