Here’s your chance to win a digital kitchen scale

In many other countries ingredients used in cooking and baking are weighed because 50 grams of all-purpose flour is always 50 grams of flour.

However, depending on how you measure it in a measuring cup, what you think is 1/2 cup flour one is actually 1/2 cup minus a tablespoon on the day you’re in a hurry and 1/2 cup plus one tablespoon on the day you didn’t level off your measuring cup with a knife blade. These subtleties can adversely effect baking results.

You wouldn’t want to incorrectly measure the flour on a batch of cookies and mess those up. The horrors.

There’s also the issue of portion sizes and weighing food and many people find scales helpful for that.

Also included in this giveaway is a free email consultation with a nutritionist on the SlimKicker team.

  1. I want a scale so badly! I am trying to get better at baking, and I know that having a scale is essential for getting precise results. I would use my new scale to bake up a storm! (And then I would definitely need to use slimkicker!)

  2. The ‘No Snacks After Dinner’ challenge sounds … challenging. It would be great to have to be accountable to someone besides myself!

  3. If I had a food scale, life would be much easier. I’m on weight watchers and it’s hard to determine how many ounces a food item is just by looking at it!

  4. That Ozeri would be a huge improvement from the dial scale I’m using now, love the wide range and .05oz increments! I paid $5.19 for my current scale at Target and although it’s perfect for traveling since it’s so small and the weighing tray is actually a box that can hold the scale, the 1lb capacity and 5g increments aren’t great for certain recipes.

  5. I think the scale would definitely help me to be more accurate with healthy portions..and make better cookies for my grandchildren!

  6. Ooh, I think the “Exercise before facebook” challenge is a great idea! I’m not really all that attached to it, but I automatically gravitate there whenever I open my laptop!

  7. I have a cookbook that is all by weight so I would use this often! Plus to bake because I know it is the absolute most accurate way to do so!

  8. I do use a food scale for most of my baking, but mine isn’t very accurate anymore so I could definitely use a new one!

  9. Hey Averie,
I would really love to win the scale. Over the last year I was diagnosed as hypothyroid and put on 20lbs. I’m a 28 yr old woman and I feel like my young adulthood has gone out the window. My thyroid numbers are improving and I’m starting weightlifting and am determined to get my body back. I struggle financially due to a lack of health insurance but have chosen to invest in whole foods and my family helped me afford a gym membership. I’m so lucky to have their support. Anyways, I’ve just started tracking my food intake and need a scale for accuracy. Cups and spoons don’t cut it exactly. Thank you for your wonderful blog. It always puts a smile on my face.
All the best to you and yours,
    Dani

  10. My kitchen scale is on it’s last leg! It helps me with portion control, but especially with baking. So much more accurate!

  11. I would like to do the no snacks after dinner challenge! Snacking after dinner is a habit I need to stop!

  12. Hi Averie,
I have been a vegan vegetarian for most of my life, and recently I have found pleasure in cooking and finding recipes that have been ‘healthier’ for my body. And finding your website has helped me so much, and I must say that of all the websites that I found, yours has been the most helpful and interesting!
Thank you so very much for all your wonderful cooking tips and for sharing your day in the kitchen!
Those challenges on Slimkicker.com look fantastic, and of all the challenges I think I’d take up the ’10 Wall Squats a day’ challenge because I’m not the fittest person in the world and could do with the exercise (and health benefits of the exercise).
Thank you for the opportunity to win the digital kitchen scale and free email consultation.
And thank you once again, Averie, for all the wonderful tips and recipes on your website!! :)
    Happy Cooking!
    -Amy :)

  13. I would love a food scale to be more accurate with my measurements while baking!

  14. I would LOVE a food scale. I think it would give my baking the edge it needs (sometimes I’m lazy and scoop my flour, etc.) and it would also provide a great reality check in terms of portions, etc.

    thanks for the awesome giveaway!

  15. I follow you on Pinterest and repinned your Birthday Cake Oreo Brownies. marthalynn16 [at] gmail [dot] com

  16. I don’t use a food scale, but I always think I should, especially when my baking projects turn into baking disasters!

  17. SlimKicker looks so motivating! I’d love to try the Challenge to Plan 1 Meal for Tomorrow. marthalynn16 [at] gmail [dot] com

  18. OOOh, thanks for the chance! I actually started using slimkicker as a beta tester, but I had started weight watchers at the same time and it was just too much to do. I already do entirely too many social media things ( as you can tell by my pinterest use and blog comments! ) so I kind of quit using it.

The challenge I really liked was to not eat snacks after dinner. I reallllllllly need to do that. :)

    Thanks again!
    -Calee

  19. I bake GFree so I LOVE using a scale for more precise flour measurements! The one I currently use is super jankety, so I would love the chance to win a new one. Thanks Avery!

  22. I used to have a little cheap-o ghetto kitchen scale with a cup on a balance-type thing but the cup wouldn’t stay on the scale and the scale wouldn’t stay true-to-weight, so I chunked it. I would use it for baking since I am rekindling a love of bread-baking!

  23. I would LOVE to have a scale to use in the kitchen. My sis has one and we share kitchen stories so I would love to be able to say “Yeah I have one too!” She uses it for everything. SLIMKICKER also AMAZING!!!!!!! People are just brilliant sometimes. This sounds perfect for me ;)

  24. I don’t have a kitchen scale , I would love one. By the way I checked out the site and it looks like so much fun to help me lose weight so when I join I wanted to particpe with the Sleep at 11 PM for A week challenge.

  29. I’ve never had a kitchen scale but think it would come in handy, especially with all those delicious-sounding recipes I find that are all in grams and such!

  30. I think the Exercise Before Facebook challenge is brilliant. I spend too much time in front of my computer and too little time moving.

  31. I used to have a foodscale and LOVED it! I think it died from over use. I could def. use another one as I think I have been a bit heavy handed with my portions lately!

  33. I haven’t used a food scale before but I have been wanting to get one and try it out for a long time!

  40. I’d definitely use the scale. I’m always looking for health accountability and this is the true tool!

  41. I would love a scale to measure cheese! 30 grams is a serving, the equivalent of a few dice, but who has dice around? I find it to be the most annoying thing and I never know if I’m eating one serving or 3 servings.

  42. I have a kitchen scale and I use it for baking and measuring out servings of trail mix (if I don’t measure it, I’ll eat it all!!). I’m afraid it’s on its last leg though; I’d love a new one.

  43. I’m looking to get a food scale for a pretty unique reason – I want to measure how much food we waste during a month – it’s one of my goals for 2012.

  48. A food scale is actually on my kitchen gadget wish list! I would love one to measure out my food more accurately, as I’m trying to lose some holiday pudge. Ugh…too many Christmas cookies…and Valentine’s Day candy…and…!!!

  49. I follow you on pinterest and just re-pinned those delicious looking pancakes! :)

  52. I used to use a food scale, but it was not digital and not very accurate, so it is collecting dust somewhere in my kitchen.

  53. I would use a food scale to measure out portions, especially for meat! I can’t ever figure out how to know how much is 3oz of meat!

  54. I definitely use a scale! Mine has had quite a beating and probably needs to be re-calibrated. I use it every time I bake, especially with my Aussie cookbooks! :)

  55. I use a food scale to measure my flours! It somehow makes all of my cookies come out so much more chewy and gooey ‘just right’ in my opinion!

  56. I don’t use a food scale (yet) but i would love to use it to ration out portions for our home. Both my guy and I are very naughty in the portions department and I really would like to know what, and how much I am eating to keep a more narrow eye on our health goals.

  57. I would definitely use a scale to enhance my baking of goodies and to weigh my food for WW (ok, those appear to be in contrast but they are not! :-) )
