New and Improved

Have you ever loved a product only to have the manufacturers change it up on you?  That just happened to me with Pam buttery spray.

PAM Butter PAM Butter is a great way to add butter flavor without adding the fat of real butter or margarine. Use it when you're baking your favorite treats, or try spraying it on finished pancakes or popcorn for delicious butter flavor.

It was reformulated and I don’t like what they did to it.

I thought they just changed the packaging but they changed the actual product, too.

I don’t think  it’s “70% better”

It’s not “New & Improved” for me.

I thought it was perfect just the way it was.

I use buttery spray in most all of my baking.

I always use cooking spray.  Nothing worse that all the work of baking only to have the precious final product stick to the pan.  I even spray my aluminum foil.  No risking stickage here.

I also like the way buttery spray coats popcorn in a uniform way which doesn’t always happen when drizzling real butter over the top.  The cooking spray down method prevents the drenched on some pieces but dry on others problem.

Popcorn with cinnamon on themI like buttery spray rather than just regular or plain cooking spray because I like the buttery flavor.  Buttah makes things better.

But the new formulation has an “off” smell and and off taste to me.  I’ve actually gone to a half dozen grocery stores in the area and to Target to try to scoop up any remaining old formulation cans of Pam, but no such luck.  The “new and improved” is on the shelves in all the stores it appears.

And yes, there is Coconut Oil Spray but I don’t always want that. Coconut spray oil in can

Sometimes I just want Buttery Spray.  I guess I could just melt butter but it’s not the same as a quick blast of the ole’ spray.

Not a huge problem in life, clearly, but ya know.

It would be a big problem though if the Deep Dish Double Chocolate Golden Grahams Smores Bars (Vegan & GF options) stuck to the pan.  Must.use.spray.

Questions:

1. Do you have a favorite cooking spray?  Have you used a Misto?

There’s neutral/no-taste sprays, i.e. plain, original, and “baking” tend to be pretty flavorless.

There’s also the more noticeably flavored sprays like coconut oil spray, olive oil spray, buttery spray, grilling-flavored spray, and others.

If you have any sprays you love, I’m all ears.

I’ve never tried a Misto, either.  Maybe I should try that.  Are they messy or a pain to use?

2. Are there any products that have been reformulated or become “new and improved” but you wish they had been left the way they were?

Hair products, shampoo, conditioner, makeup, lotion, lipstick and lipgloss, toothpaste; I find health and beauty products in general notorious for this.

Sometimes the texture of the paper in toilet paper, paper towels, or tissues changes, too.  Did the cotton fields start making different cotton one day?

Condiments like salad dressing or mustard get reformulated, too.  There was a Catalina French salad dressing that Scott loved that just became “new and improved” but now he doesn’t like it anymore.

  1. Hey Averie! I have a misto and I don’t like it. I really wanted to though! I have bought a few over the years thinking I will like them more. They drip and they don’t give you a long good spray like Pam does. I even went and bought fancy butter flavored olive oil when I became vegan to use in it for my popcorn. Not good :( You might have more luck though!

I meant to message you to tell you I love my clarisonic. It makes my skin super soft!

    1. ok thanks for LMK you don’t like yours…the dripping and not a good long spray is what I had heard from friends…ugh.

And you use it on popcorn too, huh? I love popcorn :)

  2. I HATE when companies change things for the better when I already love them. I use olive oil spray for EVERYTHING. Sorry they changed your favorite. That stinks!

  3. RUNNING SHOES!!! once per year the companies will update their models. sometimes the new one stays relatively the same, and sometimes they change the shoe so much they should just give it a new name. asics 2100 series is very consistent. nike vomero has evolved quite a bit since the first version. i get so many customers who give a huge WAH when their usual shoe is no longer available!
i have never used butter spray – when i do bake, i just smear on some butter onto the baking sheet.
way too bad that you don’t like the new formula and even worse that you can’t stock up on the older spray!! keep looking?!!

    1. Oh that’s another thing…shoes. You are so right. Vomeros HAVE changed tons. And I used to wear another kind of nike air’s before I got into vomeros and the reason I stopped re-buying those was b/c yes, they did change them so much. Can only imagine how many complaints you hear from ppl on this phenomenon!

  4. Oh phew, it’s not just me. I have two bottles of Pam and they both smell “off” to me too! The scent sort of makes me gag every time I spray it. I hope they go back to the old formula they used.

  5. I am a HUGE fan of Pam’s Olive Oil cooking spray; I did not even know they had a butter spray! Man, I wish I would have taken advantage of it when it was good!

  6. I’ve never seen the coconut spray. I use sprays too and love the one just for the grill. I had a fave running shoe upgrade and could no longer wear them. Sometimes the original is the best.

  7. I haven’t had much experience with spray–I’m afraid of what else they put in there with it! And I know I’m a weirdo, but while most people think ‘buttah makes it better,’ I loathe butter with an almost comical passion! I might loathe cheese more, but it’s a close thing! I guess a Misto is one of those bottles you can put your own oil in to spray–those make sense to me and I could imagine using them. I wonder if you could get one of those and make your own spray mix with some butter flavoring?

  8. That phrase always confused me: “New & Improved”.
How can it be improved if it’s new? If it’s new, isn’t it the first time it’s been made? Haha, can you tell I was an English major?

  9. and for the second questions…a lot of stuff I love especially makeup and beauty products (face wash, creams etc.) just get discontinued, let alone reformulated…which is a complete bummer…but you always find something else

  10. I have a misto, and I don’t think I go a day without using it…I LOVE it. In fact, I love it so much, I bought one for everybody in my family for Christmas!! I use it for everything and anything! And I don’t really get “New and Improved” to me it’s either New or it’s not new but Improved, not both, like this for instance, already existed in the “old” form, so it’s just improved, haha.

    1. you love the misto and bought it for everyone?! ok…that’s high praise i need to look into one then!

      1. I don’t have this exact one, I got a glass one at Paderno here in Canada, but I’m sure they all work the same, and yeah…I just bought 5 last weekends for gifts…they’re that good!

  11. I usually use the Pam with flour added if I’m baking. Otherwise, I buy the off brand stuff!

  12. Bummer on the spray, very frustrating for your baking I’m sure!

    1. I use a lot of olive oil and coconut oil straight up for cooking, but I need a mister for winter baking.

    2. Not that I remember, products I liked have been discontinued which really sucks!

  13. I always use spray, I’d be pretty mad too!! I absolutely hate when toilet paper and stuff gets changed. BOoo
