đŸ« Fudgy Chocolate Chip Brownies are thick, rich, and a chocolate lover’s dream! Fudgy in the center with chewy edges and studded with chocolate chips, they’re an EASY homemade brownie recipe perfect for satisfying your chocolate cravings!

Five chocolate chip brownies, one is turned on its side.

Best Ever Brownies Made with Chocolate Chips

I have no idea why these are called “boyfriend brownies,” but I came across this chocolate chip brownie recipe recently. Between the two bags of chocolate chips in the recipe and the clever name, I knew I had to give the recipe a try.

  • The brownies are fudgy in the center with chewy edges and are studded with plenty of chocolate chips. They are not quite as fudgy as some of my other brownie recipes, such as Turtle Brownies, Loaded Oreo Cream Cheese Brownies, or German Chocolate Brownies, but they are by no means cakey.
  • Those other brownie recipes are closer to eating straight-up fudge, whereas this recipe is not quite to that extreme. They are quite thick and have a crackly top, which is always a bonus for me.
  • Made with basic pantry ingredients, this is one of the easiest desserts ever. You don’t even need unsweetened cocoa powder! Whisk everything in a bowl, and you’ll have the perfect treat for any celebration. You can even store them in an airtight container at room temperature for 4-5 days, meaning they’re great to bake ahead of time.

I’m the “designated baker” in my friend group and I made these the other day for a group hangout and everyone LOVED them. Some said they were the best they had ever had. We discovered they are the best when they are chilled in the fridge. Thank you for this recipe!

Ingredients and Notes

There’s no need for brownie mix to achieve the perfect balance of sweet, chocolatey flavors! To make this easy brownie recipe with chocolate chips, here are the key ingredients you’ll need:

  • Unsalted butter
  • Granulated sugar
  • Water – Instead of water, you can use coffee if you want to enhance and complement the chocolate flavor even more
  • Chocolate chips – I used semi-sweet chocolate chips because I like my brownies richer rather than sweeter. However, milk or dark chocolate chips (or a mix!) can be used. I don’t recommend melting white chocolate chips to use in the brownie batter since it’s prone to seizing up. You’d be fine to fold whole white chocolate chips into the batter, though. You’re also welcome to chop up 24 ounces of chocolate bars if that’s what you have on hand. I simply used chocolate chips for convenience
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla extract – This gives the brownie batter extra depth, enhancing the rest of the ingredients
  • All-purpose flour – I haven’t tested this recipe with gluten-free flour, but it should work just fine as long as you use a 1:1 all-purpose gluten-free flour
  • Baking soda
  • Salt

Can I add mix-ins?

Sure! Feel free to include chopped nuts, sprinkles, or Reese’s pieces for extra crunch and ultra decadent brownies, taking this recipe to the next level of rich chocolate flavor.

How to Make Chocolate Chip Brownies

Making homemade brownies with chocolate chips is so quick and easy! Chocolate chips are melted and stirred into the batter, and also folded in whole to add texture.

Here’s an overview of how the brownies are made:

  1. Melt together butter, sugar, and water.
  2. Stir in a bag of chocolate chips until they melt.
  3. Add dry ingredients and another bag (whole, unmelted) of chocolate chips to the wet ingredients before baking the brownies. Turn the brownie batter into a prepared baking pan.
  4. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean. I recommend underbaking by just a touch, because gooey and fudgy reign supreme for me when it comes to brownies. The longer you bake or overbake them, the faster and more prone to drying out they will be in the subsequent days. Keep an eye on your oven, and adjust the baking time as needed! Metal pans, glass pans, etc., all result in slightly different baking times.
  5. If you want to slice the brownies neatly, let them cool completely at room temperature before slicing them. If you don’t care about neatness, I would dig into the chocolate chip brownies as soon as they are sufficiently cool and top them with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. There’s nothing better than warm brownies with ice cream.

Can I halve the recipe?

Most likely, yes. I imagine you’d need to halve the ingredients list and simply bake in an 8×8-inch pan.

Chocolate Chip Brownies

By Averie Sunshine
đŸ« Thick, rich, and a chocolate lover's dream! Fudgy in the center with chewy edges and studded with chocolate chips! If you're craving chocolate, this EASY homemade brownie recipe is just what you need!
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 47 minutes
Cooling Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour 57 minutes
Servings: 15 servings

Ingredients

  • ⅔ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 œ cups granulated sugar
  • ÂŒ cup water or coffee
  • two 12-ounce bags semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 œ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • œ teaspoon salt, or to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 325F, line a 9×13-inch pan with aluminum foil for easier cleanup, and spray with cooking spray; set aside.
  • To a medium saucepan, add the butter, sugar, water or coffee, and bring to a simmer over medium heat, whisking nearly continuously until butter has melted and sugar has dissolved (it’s okay if it’s still slightly grainy).
  • Turn off the heat, add 12 ounces of chocolate chips, and whisk to combine until chips have melted. Transfer the mixture into a large mixing bowl.
  • Add the eggs, vanilla, and whisk vigorously to combine until smooth and shiny.
  • Add the flour, baking soda, salt, and gently stir to combine; don’t overmix.
  • Add the remaining 12 ounces of chocolate chips and stir to combine.
  • Turn batter out into the prepared pan and bake for about 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs but no batter; don’t overbake because I think the brownies are better when fudgier and not overbaked an drier.
  • Allow the brownies to cool for at least 30 to 60 minutes before slicing and serving if you want to slice them neatly.

Notes

Storage: Brownies will keep airtight at room temp for up to 5 days.

Super chocolatey! Loved the addition of coffee to the mix. Super easy recipe. I had three 18-year old girls devour it. Thanks for posting! Will definitely made again.

    1. Thanks for the 5 star review, Colleen, and I am glad these were super easy and a hit with the girls! I have a 17 year old daughter so I know how a good pan of brownies can disappear quickly 😉

I can see why you had to adapt the AllRecipes brownie recipe. They are usually reliable, but definitely needed your common sense. Now I have to go out and buy a couple bags of chocolate chips. I am giving you five stars before I do the baking simply on the basis of the wonderful photography. Are you your own photographer or does someone else do the magic?

Made these once already and am in the process of making them again right now. They came out perfectly fudgy and chewy and totally hit the spot to cure my brownie craving. I normally always keep store bought brownie mix on hand but now there won’t be a need. I added pecans and switched the water for coffee as suggested and the whole family ate them up. Thank you so much for such a great recipe
