Friday, February 17, 2012 is National Cafe au Lait Day and a Cafe au Lait is defined as:

Cafe au lait is French for “coffee with milk”. The same drink is called caffe latte in Italy and cafe con leche in Spain. It is made with a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio of dark roast brewed coffee to heated milk or half-n-half. Add sugar to taste!

Based on how I fix and like my coffee (a little coffee with lots of half and half and sweetener), I drink a cafe au lait-style coffee daily, which I pronounce as oh-lay, not ahh-late.

A national holiday is not needed for me to enjoy a homemade Cafe au Lait.

This one is even creamier. I guess you’d call it Cafe au Baileys. Aka: Cafe au So Good.

I’ve also been enjoying these caramels and they are especially wonderful washed down with a cup of coffee.

Along with my love of coffee, I love caramels, caramel sauce, and caramel-flavored anything…

I just unwrapped 40 caramels and made something else with them.

My fingers are tired after all that unwrapping, but it was so worth it. The recipe is coming.

The Peanut Butter Cheerios Giveaway winners will be announced Friday.

Are you celebrating Cafe au Lait Day with coffee or any specialty coffee drinks?

I will be, indeed. It’s a holiday that I celebrate every day, a few times over.

I want to give a special shoutout to longtime reader and friend, Michele S., who sent me a delicious bag of coffee, which I’ve been savoring the past few mornings.

Do you like caramels?

I love them and if you have any favorite caramel recipes, link them here, where you can easily drop in a picture, too.

TGIF and enjoy your weekend!

  1. hey averie! love all your caramel recipes. i’ve been meaning to make your caramel peanut butter and apricot jelly bars!! oh and your caramel apple bars! yummmmm

  2. I love a light and sweet coffee too :) Such a nice treat. Sometimes I like caramel, sometimes not so much…I guess it depends on what it’s used in! happy weekend!

    1. Start with the caramel sauce I linked to get used to boiling sugar and what it’s like working with something so hot is my advise and then work on to something solid :)

  3. I love anything with caramel. I didn’t realize today was a holiday! I may have a soy caramel flavored coffee in my future now :) Those caramel apple bars look delicious!

  4. I always loved caramels. They go really good with pretzels! My sister and I unwrapped a million, melted them and dipped pretzels in the caramel before dipping into chocolate one year. So flipping good.

  5. Drinking a coffee right now, minus the au lait part. I think it still counts.

Caramel, eh? Looking forward to seeing what you made. I’ve got some new food finds to use this weekend!

    1. thank you! You’d think I could get the details right…but life of a mom and rushing to do everything…you know how it is. Thank you for the catch…fixed. :)

      1. Yep, I hear you! Last week I put the complete wrong dates on my weekly dinner post. I caught it right after I published it. Tired brains at work. :-)

  6. Every day is cafe au lait day for me too. Love caramels because they’re rich and sugar-ful! That pumpkin pie smoothie is looking mighty good so I’m hoping I can still find canned pumpkin. Once I decide I want something, I just get on a mission for it! Looking forward to your caramel recipe.

    1. You could more than likely make it with boiled and mashed sweet potatoes, too, if you can’t find pumpkin…or a squash that’s golden-colored. Most canned “pumpkin” in the US is actually squash anyway.

  7. I’m trying to get out the door for my run right now and I could definitely use a cafe au lait! I’ll be drinking up when I finish :)

  8. The hubby and I will take a walk later to get some yummy coffee from midnight oil, the coffee shop down the road were all the young college students like to hang out. I try to stay away from coffee most of the time, lol, but since you innnsist :-) .

  9. Realizing I couldn’t have Bailey’s anymore was one of the most difficult things for me about giving up dairy! The cafe au bailey’s sounds soooo good right about now (even though it’s only 9:30 in the morning here).

    Have a great weekend!
    ~Emily~

  10. I LOVE caramel anything! It’s that salty sweet combo that we are both such fans of. It’s breakfast time here and now you’ve got me craving a giant bowl of salted caramel ice cream!
