Kiwi Agua Fresca - Refreshing, healthy, naturally sweet, so easy and ready in 30 seconds!! It'll be your new favorite drink!!

What is Agua Fresca?

I was recently in a small taco shop here in San Diego and had the most amazing kiwi water. Refreshing, healthy, naturally sweet, with the perfect amount of texture, and just so good. I polished off my tiny glass in ten seconds flat and knew I had to recreate it.

This is the easiest agua fresca recipe ever. Add peeled kiwis to a blender with water, optional sweeter, and it’s ready. It’ll be your new favorite summertime beverage.

Agua Fresca, Spanish for ‘fresh water’, can be made with almost any fruit from watermelon to mango, which I see more often in my area, but kiwi aqua fresca was new to me.

Ironically, until now I had never considered myself much of a kiwi person. It’s just one of those fruits I never sought out and am kicking myself for a lifetime of self-imposed kiwi deprivation. It’s so juicy, sweet, and I love the texture from the seeds.

What’s in Agua Fresca?

All you need to make this Mexican agua fresca recipe is:

  • Fresh kiwis
  • Cold water
  • Sweetener of choice

How to Make Agua Fresca

Simply add the ingredients to a blender and blend on high speed until the kiwis have broken down. Taste to check sweetness level and make any adjustments if necessary.

How Long Does Agua Fresca Last?

Although this kiwi agua fresca recipe is best enjoyed right away, leftovers will stay fresh up to 4 days in the fridge.

Tips for Making Agua Fresca

This Mexican agua fresca has texture and it’s no where near as thick as a smoothie, but there’s more heft to it than just plain water. To strain the fruit or the seeds would be like wasting all the good parts and I recommend drinking it right out of the blender. Plus it’s easier that way too.

You may not even need to add sweetener depending on how naturally sweet your kiwis are.

Feel free to make it as thin or thick as you like by playing with the fruit-to-water ratio. I can’t wait to start experimenting with other fruits!

Ingredients

  • 7 or 8 ripe kiwis, peeled and quartered
  • 6 to 8 cups cold water, or as desired
  • sweetener, optional and to taste*

Instructions

  • To the canister of a blender, add kiwis, 6 cups water, optional sweetener, and blend on high speed until kiwis have broken down, about 30 seconds, or as long as desired.
  • Taste to check sweetness level and make any adjustments if necessary. If you prefer a thinner beverage, add additional water to thin out and blend for a few seconds.
  • Pour into glasses and serve immediately. Optionally garnish with a few thinly sliced kiwi on top.
  • Drink will keep airtight in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Notes

  • *A drizzle of agave or non-sugar sweetener packets are my preferred sweeteners because they dissolve easily, but aren’t always necessary depending on natural sweetness of fruit.

  1. O.K. Now I want to try every drink on your site (except for the alcoholic ones). I, too, have eschewed kiwis for most of my life. They were just not that exciting to me. But this agua fresca is making me want to go buy some right now :)

    1. I’ve seen it served every which way from fresh and with water straight from the tap (only as cold as that gets) to lightly chilled to very chilled. Do what you prefer.

  2. I love aqua fresca – usually watermelon or pineapple – and a kiwi version sounds fantastic!!

  3. This is such a great idea, I have never thought about making kiwi water. Thanks for the post :) I usually come on to your site just to look at all your delicious brownie and cookie recipes but this is good too! especially for the summer months x

  4. What a beautiful summer drink idea! Kiwis are some of my favorites this time of year…I’ll definitely be giving this a try!

  5. When I was in Ecuador, I got SO into all the different flavors of agua fresca.  They had every flavor known to man, and you could get the agua or the leche version. I clearly chose agua, but everyone else swore the leche was better.

Kind of OT, but I really want to get one of those water bottles with the infuser insert so I can throw in cukes, berries, lemons, etc.

    1. They do similar to what you’re talking about at a local farmer’s market and I think the ‘milk’ versions here are actually more horchata-based than true leche based, i.e. rice/nut milk rather than actually milk. Don’t even get me started on how fabulous the homemade local horchata is!

And I see people with those infuser bottles all the time. I think I need one too!

  6. I like drinking water, but there’s only so much I can drink before it gets a bit old. It happens more in the summer since it’s hot outside (especially on days I run). This sounds like the perfect solution for when you want something like water but with a bit of flavor! Plus, I’m always trying to get my boyfriend to drink more and this sounds like a great way to do it. I’ll also have to try the mango and watermelon suggestions as those sound amazing!! Thanks for this!

  7. Love the color!  Looks so refreshing and healthy too. Can’t wait to try it!

  8. Wow, I’ve never heard of kiwi water but it sure sounds good! I love kiwis and the bright green look of this water looks so cool!

  9. I love the color of the drink.I have never heard of this kind of drink. It’s something i’m going to try.

  10. I have been trying to figure out how to get my husband to actually drink water for 2 years now…and then you posted this! He is in love with kiwis (I’m jealous) so he may just go for this! Pinned!

  11. I love the color and look of this–I’ve had a watermelon version but not kiwi (mango sounds good too). This will be perfect to try on Friday–we have been excavating and building a rain garden in the back yard so I will have 140 native flowering perennials to plant. A few breaks will be in order and this should hit the spot….and I probably will literally drink it out of the blender!

    1. Paula it is SOOOooooo good. I drank like half the blender full on the spot :) LMK what you think!

    2. I made this after an extra sweaty run today (the humidity has been on the rise this week). I generally prefer flavored or infused water and this was even better–I think it was that little bit of texture from the seeds. I love the color too–green just makes me feel like I’m drinking something healthful!

      1. I am so glad you liked it and it’s the perfect post-sweaty-run drink! I had one of those very sweaty runs today too but didn’t have this on hand and I had flavored water! Great minds :) Enjoy your weekend and stay cool!

  12. Wow. I never thought that kiwi could be blended into water! This should be the new spa drink.
It’s gorgeous, too. And you were at a taco shop. Say no more. Your life must have been perfect in that moment!
