Friday the 13th started off with a bang. Someone smashed Scott’s car windows and broke into his car overnight. There was absolutely nothing in the car to take, but apparently the thieves thought there was.
We woke up to broken glass everywhere and we’re getting estimates on how much it’s going to cost to fix, but we’ll have to satisfy our insurance deductible first.
When I wrote the post late Thursday about the sprinkles incident and klutz day, and also referenced broken glass, I should have knocked on wood or something because it turned out to be some gnarly broken glass foreshadowing.
There was only one thing that was going to make me feel better:
Chocolate
I tried a new recipe and it almost worked. It’s so close to being where I want it, and I could probably post it.
But it’s not quite 100% perfect so I’m going to hold off until I make sure it’s exactly right.
One thing that is exactly right is watermelon. I’ve been eating tons of it and am still in love with every juicy bite.
I made more of the Pumpkin Spiced Brown Rice Tempeh and Cranberry Salad (vegan, gluten free if GF tempeh is used)
It’s actually hot for San Diego. Low 80sF and some humidity, so a quick stir fry made for an easy dinner. Compared to the rest of the country, that’s cool, but for us, it’s toasty and I love it.
If I would have had any Dark Rum Cookies on hand, that would have been dessert.
Thanks for the giveaway entries (there’s 2 going on):

How was your Friday the 13th?
I’m just glad it’s over.
Are you up to anything fun this weekend?
I’m going to enjoy the nice weather, run outside and get all sweaty and love it, spend time with the family, and try to perfect the chocolate recipe I’m working on.
I’m so sorry to hear about your trouble. My husband’s truck was stolen the summer before last and before they took it they tried to break into my car and broke off my door handle in the process. We eventually got my husband’s truck back but it took several days. Everything, of course, was in the truck, his tools for work, his cell, his wallet. Nearly everything had to be replaced. Good luck and remember that there are many, many more good people in the world than destructive people.
Yikes and hope you guys never go thru that again!
That is terrible! Hopefully the car isn’t damaged too badly. When I was in college my brother was visiting and overnight some kids (I assume) smashed his windows to take some change that was in a cup holder. The person who did it had to have injured themeslves, over literally pennys, judging by the blood on the door and splattered throughout. Funny how little worthless things mean a whole different world to others….
It truly takes all types, doesn’t it. I honestly suspect this person was just punching windows for the heck of it b/c there was nothing! visible of value and nothing of value in Scott’s quite old car. Seriously don’t get people, same with your bro’s car!
That is just horrible. I don’t understand how someone could feel ok about doing something like that for sport. This year at Passover dinner at my in laws my car was egged. The person who was throwing the eggs hit my car with such force that it actually visibly damaged the pain on my car. I have a several inch section that at some point will wind up rusting. Wish you luck with the insurance adjusters!
Hot is 80 in San Diego?! I need to move there. I hope your luck has turned around for a while!
Coastal San Diego is usually about 75 to 80 max in the summer. The ocean keeps it cool; likewise we get a colder winter than most people imagine. They think we just rollerblade on the beach all day here in bikinis year round, Three’s Company style :)
Klutz? Me? YEP.
OMG Averie! That is so scary!! I lived in a bad part of Baltimore couple years ago and my car was broken into. Smashed open my passenger’s seat window and stole amy GPS… and my make-up case. Apparently they wanted to look good while running away. My GPS was hidden but they saw the GPA stand on my dashboard. It was terrible! I’m glad everyone is safe though! I didn’t have any bad luck on Friday the 13th… although I did wake up hungover from a few too many beers on Thursday night. :)
Are those broken up pieces of TJs pound plus bar?? LOVE those things!!
The funny part of all of this is that I don’t consider where we live to be bad at all; in fact it’s pretty darn nice. It’s urban, yes, but as urban goes, it’s definitely nice urban and I swear it was just a smash a window to smash a window situation. Sounds like your weekend was FUN! Pound Plus = never am without :)
I think chocolate makes everything better :-)
what is WRONG WITH PEOPLE! Good thing you had the ice cream.
It is sad how some people do not consider – at all – the person/people they are hurting when they do things like that. It’s sad. I am sorry to hear about that for your sakes! I hope it is not too expensive!
Chocolate is a comfort, especially when it comes in the shape of little squares with some flour, sugar and delicious cream cheese frosting! :-)
I know…all it’s doing is taking money we could have used on something else and our time…so frustrating!
So sorry about Scott’s car, that’s awful! People can be so rude :/. Chocolate is the best way to feel better fast. Looking forward to the recipe when it’s ready!
My Friday the 13th was great!!! I cooked with a friend and drank slushy drinks in the backyard.
My Friday the 13th was actually a great day! Ending in a super fun night. My Saturday the 14th however? Yeah it’s barely started and it’s already turning into a horrible day. Ugh – I hate awkward moments and people who don’t just come out and say what they mean!
you’re one day late for Fri the 13th things…hope your day gets better!
Ugh,, so sorry about Scott’s car – what a pisser! Great recipes though! Agreed on Friday and this week being over! Mine was actually okay at work and a fun co-worker gathering after was nice, especially since the drinks were free.
free drinks on a fri nite = perfect end to the week!
Sorry to hear about Scott’s car–that kind of random senseless stuff drives me crazy and it is impossible for me to understand why people do that. My husband’s take home police car was vandalized (while parked at our house ) several years ago. Glad you have a chocolate recipe in the works–can’t wait to see it!
random senseless– YES! I honestly feel like it was just done as a well, we’ll punch this window out and see what happens rather than a true point to stealing something. There was nothing!! in that car to steal!
Oh no! So sorry to hear about the car. At least no one was hurt and nothing was taken.
I hope the chocolate made you feel better!
Oh, so sorry Averie :( John has had his car broken into 2x since we lived out here. It was when he had his fancy Pandora radio in it. Both incidences were in the city and both times the radio was taken. He now has gone back to the original radio and has given up on the Pandora radio. The thieves did not break any windows or locks because they had this fancy gadget that unlocked the door. It still feels like you were violated and your car feels dirty. Yuck! It is strange that you did a post on things breaking yesterday, don’t you think?
Anyway, I can’t wait to see your creation when in fact you tweak it to perfection!
I hope the rest of your weekend is better and full of chocolate!
xoxo,
Jackie
Sorry about your hubby’s car. The strange thing our situation is that there was nothing! of value to be taken. Older car, factory/stock everything, just one of those headshake moments!
Chocolate always seems to help calm an intense situation. So sorry to hear about the glass window…I always wonder what goes through other peoples minds when they do something like that!!! At least the day is over and you have lots of chocolate to play with. Can’t wait to see the recipe:-)
Yes I wonder what goes through people’s heads, too. Seriously!
So sorry to hear about Scott’s car being broken into! My stepbrother’s window was smashed last week and he has his iPod and GPS stolen, but luckily as the thief was running out of the parking lot with his stuff, an off-duty cop (dressed in a cowboy hat and boots since it’s Stampede time over here!) saw him and took him down! He left a note for my stepbro on his windshield to ask him to call him, and then he was able to get all of his stuff back! I thought it was an awesome story. I’m so glad to hear there was nothing in Scott’s car worth stealing, but unfortunate that you now have to deal with the broken window.
Wow that is quite the story! What are the odds…it’s almost like something from a tv episode where it “all works out in the end”!
What an awful way to start your day! I’m sorry to hear about the smashed car windows. I know how that feels when your stomach just drops. We had our car windows smashed in NY. They took nothing of importance but it really is a hassle. I hope you have a much better start to your weekend!
It’s the hassle factor, YES!
Thank goodness there was nothing to be stolen, it can always be worse! Hope the rest of your weekend is much less uneventful!
Oh gosh—I’ sorry to hear about the car!
I traveled to Boston to visit friends—when I woke up this morning I had no idea where I was for a second. Today we’re going to brunch and the aquarium, so that should be fun.
Hope your Saturday is better!
Lol – glad you figured out where you are at :) I’ve had that happen when traveling for a quick second before!
Sooo sorry about the car, that’s happened to us several times over the years and it makes you feel so vulnerable.
The photo of the chocolate and the watermelon are wonderful—hope you have a better day!
Thanks for the photo compliments :)
Oh wow! Amen for chocolate!!! Hope there are brighter days coming your way! And more chocolate! (:
Wow what a crazy Friday the 13th. Sorry to hear that. Chocolate gets me through too lol
I am so sorry to hear about your husband’s car window! WHat are people thinking, really?
At least you had chocolate, though :)
Trust me, I really wonder that, too. Headshake. Big time!
So sorry to hear about your Friday the 13th problems. My day wasn’t bad, thankfully. This weekend I will of course be baking, but I’m actually going out to dinner for a change too!
ohhhhh no! So sorry to hear about the glass :( That is terrible- why do people do stuff like that?
That totally stinks about the car! Chocolate does make everything better :)
how crazy!! poor scott. Maybe he’s need some more rum in those cookies. Oh heck, let’s just bust out the baileys! Hope the insurance covers most of it.
xxoo
After the deductible we shall see. Of course, have to satisfy that first. Fun!
Oh that sucks that his car got broken into! Wish there were not peoPle like that out there. Thank god for chocolate!
agreed!
OMG, that’s terrible! People will do anything to find a few bucks or a cell phone — anything when they’re desperate. The worst part is feeling violated. One of the worst feelings ever. How dare someone destroy what is not theirs. Scum bags.
Move to NY right next door to me. There’s a gorgeous house and it’s exactly what we talked about in email, except it’s in NY… across the country… away from paradise… and your job. But it has me and we can have twinsie houses!! :D Seriously. I’d love to have you here. xo
Rescued from spam..not sure why that happened (again) – askimet, google, so strange.
And I would love to have a big house with a huge kitchen and that VIEW you have…omg! The stories we could tell and the things we could cook and bake if we lived side by side! xoxo :)
Thanks for rescuing me. Darn filters.
The house can be yours very easily… just a plane ride away!! I am positive you’d be able to move in the same day you arrived, lol. Not even kidding!
Eww sorry about the car, i always worry parking on the street in bankers hill. My friends car was stolen last year in this area as well. ugh. Lots of fun things this weekend! There are some free yoga classes on harbor Island through the yoga journal conference and of course people watching at comic con. I hope your weekend improves over today and that we get some nice sun :)
