Easy Chocolate Chip One Bowl Brownies Recipe
- I love that these brownies are made in one bowl, you don’t need a mixer, they’re made with common fridge and pantry staples, they’re always a family favorite!
- This recipe is an adaptation of my Starbucks Double Chocolate Copycat Brownies recipe. Rather than making the batter exclusively with cocoa powder, I melted some chocolate chips in butter and mixed that along with the cocoa powder to create an super smooth, fudgy texture.
- I needed to bump up the flour content by 1/4 cup in order to compensate for this wetter batter. And then decided to add a bit of baking powder because my husband does not like super dense brownies. Tip: If you love a flat, ultra dense brownie, you can omit the baking powder.

Ingredients in One Bowl Brownies with Chocolate Chips
Butter: I use either unsalted butter or salted butter, depending on my mood. Some salt with chocolate is always a good idea because it helps bring out the best chocolate flavor.
Semi-sweet chocolate chips: You’re going to melt 1/2 cup of them with the butter and the rest are for sprinkling on top before baking. You may use milk chocolate chips if you want the brownies to read sweeter.
Granulated sugar: You need it to sweeten the brownies since nothing else is very sweet in this recipe – neither the semi-sweet chocolate chips and definitely not the cocoa powder which is downright bitter.
Unsweetened natural cocoa powder: Make sure to select this (basic Hershey’s or Trader Joe’s own version) and not hot chocolate powder or anything sweetened. You may use Dutch process cocoa powder, but it’s not necessary – and is almost always more expensive so I don’t see much point.
Eggs + Vanilla Extract: Add structure, volume, and flavor.
Dry Ingredients: All-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder which can be omitted for a fudgier brownie, although these are already very fudgy.

Chocolate Chip One Bowl Brownies
Equipment
Ingredients
- ½ cup unsalted butter, (salted butter may be used if you prefer a more salty-sweet dessert)
- 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, divided 3 ways (in the melted butter, in the batter, sprinkled on top)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup unsweetened natural cocoa powder, (dutch-processed cocoa is not required but may be substituted; sifting is not required but if it's particularly lumpy you may wish to sift it)
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste (flaky sea salt sprinkled on top of the pan before baking is another option)
- ½ teaspoon baking powder, (omit if you want an ultra fudgy, flat, dense brownie)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350F and line an 8×8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper or nonstick aluminum foil for easier cleanup and spray with cooking spray; set aside.
- To a large, microwave-safe bowl add the butter and heat on high power to melt, about 1 minute.
- Add 1/2 cup chocolate chips to the melted butter and stir to melt. If the chocolate chips cannot be stirred smooth, pop the bowl back into the microwave and microwave for 10 seconds, stop to stir, and repeat until the chocolate chips have melted.
- Wait momentarily (you don't want to scramble the eggs) before adding the sugar, cocoa powder, eggs, vanilla, and whisk to combine.
- Add the flour, salt, baking powder, and stir until just combined; don't overmix.

- Add 1/2 cup chocolate chips and stir to incorporate.

- Turn batter out into prepared pan (it will be quite thick) and smooth the top lightly with a spatula.
- Evenly sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup chocolate chips on top, lightly tapping them down so they adhere.

- Bake for about 25 minutes or until the edges are set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs, but no batter.

- Allow brownies to cool in pan on a wire rack for about 1-2 hours before slicing and serving. I sliced them into 9 pieces but they're rich and decadent and you could stretch this to 12+ pieces.

Thanks for the 5 star review JoJo and so glad you loved the flavor with the salted butter and that you’re going to make again! Let me know how it goes in an 11×7 pan too.
These are so easy n simple and delicious. I just added walnuts and coconuts to the batter then sprinkled powdered sugar on top after they are baked – so yummy.

Can I use cacoa powder for this unsweetened cocoa powder?
Yes, you want to use unsweetened cocoa powder. Sometimes it’s called unsweetened natural cocoa powder.
https://go.shopmy.us/p-44102251 Like that or a similar brand. Don’t use hot cocoa mix!
I made these with gluten-free flour and they turned out just great! Will definitely be making them again!

Help your receipes are great but with one slight problem. How do you save them on printerest. There appears to be another way but it means learning something new and right now I am subscribing to the Kiss theory. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
