Easy 30-Minute Homemade Chicken Tortilla Soup — Chicken, tomatoes, corn, black beans, avocado, cheese, and addictively crunchy tortilla strips! Fast, easy weeknight meal, and better than from a restaurant!!
Easy Chicken Tortilla Soup Recipe
When I see chicken tortilla soup on a restaurant menu, I get excited. There’s something about the slightly spicy broth with tender chicken, the corn and black beans, juicy tomatoes, creamy avocado, and those addictively good tortilla strips on top that I can’t resist.
Rather than making a trip out for it, you can make Mexican tortilla soup with chicken at home in 30 minutes and it’s easy.
So many ingredients get tossed into the pot all at once and before you know it this hearty, comforting soup is ready. And it tastes better than my favorite restaurant version!
My family loved this easy tortilla soup and I love that it’s ready so quickly and with very minimal effort.
It makes enough that I stashed half in the freezer for those nights when I just want to pull something out of the freezer for dinner. And with winter cold and flu season around the corner, soup is perfect.
Classic Chicken Tortilla Soup Ingredients
To make this easy tortilla soup recipe, you’ll need:
- Corn tortillas
- Olive oil
- Kosher salt and pepper
- Yellow onion
- Jalapeño pepper
- Garlic
- Chicken broth
- Diced tomatoes
- Black beans
- Cooked shredded chicken
- Corn
- Lime juice
- Spices
- Fresh cilantro
How to Make Chicken Tortilla Soup
This really is such an EASY recipe for chicken tortilla soup! Here’s a look at how it’s made:
- Sauté the onion and jalapeño in an oiled Dutch oven, then add the diced garlic and continue cooking until fragrant.
- Add the chicken broth, tomatoes and juice, black beans, chicken, corn, lime juice, spices and bring to a boil.
- Let the mixture boil for 5 minutes, then stir in fresh cilantro and boil another minute.
- Ladle the homemade chicken tortilla soup into bowls and top with homemade tortilla strips (I’ve given the recipe in the recipe card below), cubed avocado, shredded cheese, and/or sour cream.
Can I Make This Recipe in the Crockpot?
I’m sure you could, but when a recipe is as quick and easy as this one I’d rather use the stove to avoid dirtying extra dishes.
How to Store Chicken Tortilla Soup
This easy tortilla soup will keep airtight in the fridge for 5 to 7 days or in the freezer for up to 6 months. Extra tortilla strips will keep in airtight at room temp for up to 5 days.
Can I Freeze This Recipe?
Yes! You can freeze the soup (without the tortilla strips on top) for up to 6 months.
What to Serve with Chicken Tortilla Soup
This simple tortilla soup pairs well with crusty bread or a green side salad. Here are a few side dishes to serve with chicken tortilla soup:
- Grilled Mexican Corn
- Homemade Tortilla Chips
- Salsa (Pineapple Chipotle Salsa or Restaurant-Style)
- Guacamole
- Grilled Corn and Avocado Salad
- Mexican Wedge Salad
Pair your bowl of soup with a homemade margarita or refreshing glass of horchata to wash it all down!
Tips for the Best Chicken Tortilla Soup
To save time, use store-bought rotisserie chicken or leftover chicken that you have on hand. Of course you can roast or pan sauté chicken if you’re so inclined.
Salt your soup to taste. I use low-sodium chicken broth and no-salt-added tomatoes and add a bit of salt to my soup so I can control the overall salt level.
The saltiness of low-sodium broth, rotisserie chickens, canned tomatoes, black beans, and personal preferences for salt all vary so salt to taste.

Easy 30-Minute Homemade Chicken Tortilla Soup
Chicken, tomatoes, corn, black beans, avocado, cheese, and addictively crunchy tortilla strips! Fast, easy weeknight meal, and better than from a restaurant!!
Ingredients
Tortilla Strips
- 10 small corn tortillas, cut into 1/4-inch wide strips
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
Soup
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup sweet Vidalia or yellow onion, peeled and diced small (about 1 medium onion)
- 1 large jalapeno pepper (about 4 to 5 inches long), diced very small (the seeds are where the heat is concentrated; included or discard them based on preference)
- 4 garlic cloves, peeled and finely minced
- 32 ounces (4 cups) low-sodium chicken broth
- two 14.5-ounce cans diced tomatoes and juice (I used petite diced, no-salt-added)
- one 15-ounce can black beans, drained and rinsed
- 2 cups shredded cooked chicken (use storebought rotisserie chicken to save time; or roast or cook your own chicken in a skillet)
- 1 1/2 cups corn (I used frozen straight from the freezer, fresh may be substituted)
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 2 teaspoons cumin
- 2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (regular paprika may be substituted)
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional and to taste
- 1/3 cup fresh cilantro leaves, finely minced
- diced avocado for serving, optional for serving
- shredded cheese, optional for serving
- sour cream, optional for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375F and line a baking sheet with a Silpat or foil to save cleanup time.
- Loosely scatter the tortilla strips, evenly drizzle with olive oil, evenly sprinkle with kosher salt, toss with hands to coat evenly, and bake for about 15 to 18 minutes, or until crisp and lightly golden brown; set aside.
- While strips bake, begin making the soup.
- To a large Dutch oven or stockpot, add 2 tablespoons olive oil and heat over medium-high heat to warm.
- Add the onion, jalapeno, and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until vegetables begin to soften. Stir intermittently.
- Add the garlic and sauté for 1 to 2 minutes. Stir intermittently.
- Add the chicken broth, tomatoes and juice, black beans, chicken, corn, lime juice, chili powder, cumin, 2 teaspoons salt, pepper, smoked paprika, optional cayenne pepper, and bring to a boil.
- Allow mixture to boil gently for about 5 to 7 minutes. If at any point the overall liquid level looks low or you prefer your soup to have more broth, add 1 to 2 cups of water; you’ll adjust the salt and seasoning levels at the end.
- Add the cilantro and boil 1 minute.
- Taste soup and add salt to taste. This will vary based on how salty the chicken broth, tomatoes, black beans, and rotisserie chicken are, and personal preference. Make any necessary seasoning adjustments (i.e. more salt, pepper, chili powder, cumin, cayenne, etc.).
- Ladle soup into bowls, top with tortilla strips to taste, optionally garnish with avocado, cheese and/or sour cream; serve immediately.

I just posted the question about the calorie content. I’m seeing that the recipe calls for rotisserie chicken and maybe that’s why it’s 737 calories. I plan to use poached boneless, skinless breasts and will use less oil for sautéing the onion and peppers so that will lighten the calorie load. Looks delicious and am looking forward to trying this.
The nutrition stats are a computer generated courtesy estimate. Many online tools can often have a wide variety of results for the “same” recipe. I am not a dietician so all info is provided as a courtesy estimate. IMO this estimate is high but of course, that’s just my hunch. Enjoy the soup!
This was fantastic. I left out the beans to make it more keto friendly for my husband. I’ve made it several times and each time it’s a mega hit. It’s been added to our favorites. Thank you!And for those interested, it’s perfect in a crockpot, smoked paprika is a must and a dollop of sour cream on top of it is divine.
I am glad it has been fantastic and a mega hit and one of your favorites! Also great to know you’ve been able to make it in a Crock Pot!
This is very good and extremely easy! Thanks!
I am glad you enjoyed it and that it was extremely easy for you!
Hi Averie,I made this recipe a couple of weeks ago, and we really liked it! I did make a couple of adjustments to fit our taste though – I used only 1 tsp of cumin (since cumin is very overpowering) and instead of salt I used Goya Bouillon powder for a richer chicken flavor. I couldn’t help myself by frying up the corn tortilla strips since that’s how I’m used to eating them, however, baking them is a much healthier approach Thanks again! I’ll be cooking up another batch soon since the weather is still chilly in Vegas.
I’m glad you enjoyed the recipe and that this hit the spot and you tweaked it to your liking and hope the weather is warming up for you now!
Hi Averie,Last night my daughter and I went out to dinner and just for 2 bowls of chicken tortilla soup it was $10. So, today I decided to look up your recipe online and make it myself. Since neither of us can eat real spicey food, I used half of the jalapeno and decreased the spicey spices a little and it was perfect. I didn’t have any corn tortillas, so I broke up sea salt tortilla chips.
Thanks for the 5 star review and I am glad you decided to learn how to make this and that it was perfect! Necessity is the mother of invention, right! :)
I made this tonight, and my *particular* 10-year-old daughter and I both LOVED IT. I was craving good chicken tortilla soup and this is it. Thank you!!!
Thanks for the 5 star review and I’m glad you both loved it and that it hit the spot for your tortilla soup craving!
I didn’t have all the ingredients, but made an excellent soup that required 2nds from all.1 lb ground chicken browned1/2 large onion / 2 tablespoons olive oil-5 min4 cups chicken broth1 can corn1 c pinto beans1 can diced tomatoes1 can rotelgarlic salt, paprika, salt, pepper1 T Lime juicelow boil for 5-7-9 minTaste for spicesI used store bought tortilla chipssour cream, avocado, cheeseSuccess
Glad that this was a success and you were able to use what you had!
I have made this soup, per this recipe, at least ten times now. If I ever make a different soup my husband says, “awwww why not the tortilla?? ” And he’s very picky, so that’s a huge compliment :). Thank you for the recipe. It’s easy, to boot!
Thanks for the 5 star review and I’m glad that this is a favorite for you and your husband and that it’s picky eater approved!
The recipe appears to fail to mention when to add the rotisserie chicken
Step 4 reads: Add the chicken broth, tomatoes and juice, black beans, chicken, corn, lime juice, chili powder, cumin, 2 teaspoons salt, pepper, smoked paprika, optional cayenne pepper, and bring to a boil.
Note CHICKEN right after the black beans.
Ha ha thanks! I read it like 3 times and apparently missed it each time.
Thank you, I have just been searching for info approximately this topic for ages and yours is the greatest I’ve come upon so far.
Regarding jalapeño, you say the heat is in the seeds, not true. It’s the white veiny part. Just saying.
Best soup I have EVER made! Scrumptious! ❤❤❤
Thanks for the 5 star review and I am glad that it’s the best soup you’ve ever made!
I Made this 30 min soup and was pleasantly surprised how good it was the only thing I added to it was some left over cabbage I wanted to use before it went bad this was the best soup I ever made!! Thank You
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad that this is the best soup you’ve ever made!
Excellent weeknight recipe! Thank you, Averie. One correction, though. The heat in jalapeños, is NOT in the seeds, (although that used to be a common misconception), but in the Capsaicin Glands – also called membrane, ribs, or pith. There are many articles that explain this. Here is a detailed one with good pictures: https://www.cayennediane.com/anatomy-of-a-chile-pepper/. I live in New Mexico, where we eat LOTS of chile – mostly Hatch, although jalapeños are everywhere too. I think it’s illegal to remove the Capsaicin Glands. (Just kidding, of course, but we do like it hot!)
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you love the recipe!
I actually eat a ton of spicy food and grow my own chiles, too. I have always always been told, have read, informed, etc that it’s the seeds that are the culprits. But this sheds light on the capsaicin glands as the source of the heat. Wow, very interesting and I have never ever known this nor been told this by anyone including other chile loving people!
This looks tasty! Can’t wait to try it out.
This recipe is 100% amazing in flavor and ease in preparation. This will be our family go to recipe. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this will be your family go-to!
Delicious! I make this every month or so and freeze leftovers for easy lunches. I cut the salt in half and use store-bought tortilla chips for convenience. I would recommend quartering or omitting the cayenne if you plan to serve this to children who are not accustomed to spicy food.
Thanks for the 5 star review and I’m glad that you make this every month or so and that you freeze some for easy lunches and leftovers!
Delicious. Thanks for sharing this Chicken Tortilla Soup Recipe, this one is so amazing. We tried it for the very first time and everyone loved it in my family.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this was amazing and your whole family loved it!
My husband and I made this for dinner tonight! It was so good! We used green chilies and zucchini from our garden. We used crunched up tortilla chips instead of making the tortilla strips (summer laziness) and omitted a teaspoon of salt to compensate. So easy, light and DELICIOUS! Thank you Averie!
I am so glad to hear that it was delicious and that you even used homegrown veggies from your garden!
Absolutely delicious! My husband and I are vegan so I just substituted the chicken with frozen vegan chicken strips and fresh mushrooms. This is going into my “frequent meals” recipe folder.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad that this came out great as a vegan recipe for you and will be in your frequent meals folder!
About 6 hours ago I had ‘dinner meal burnout’. I am a scratch cook who makes dinner every night unless I can coerce my husband into doing it. That’s a bad idea… he only has a kitchen because it came with the house. I made a double batch of the chicken tortilla soup tonight we inhaled it. I shared 3 quarts with community friends and they raved about it. I didn’t do a rotisserie chicken; I had raw chicken breast that I just cut into bite-sized strips and threw in my oven at 350 F. for 20 minutes to cook through while I worked on the soup itself. Then I tossed the naked baked chicken strips in my soup and went on to make the tortilla strips. I drizzed very little olive oil on my tortilla strips and gave them a smattering of kosher salt. I think I baked them at 375 for 25-30 minutes (I started answering emails and forgot them!) OMG… best healthy meal ever, people. You must try this one.
Thanks for the 5 star review and I am glad so glad this was a winner and that you even shared with friends!
This was easy and one of the best recipes I’ve tried. Definitely a keeper.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this will be a keeper for you!
I made the your Chicken Tortilla Soup last night 4/12/2022…..man! it was delicious! And so easy to make. Thank you for the recipe.
I am glad to hear it was delicious!
Excellent recipe, and excellent soup. My wife LOVED it!
Do you have a recipe on how to make corn tortillas? I’d like to try this again using homemade ones.
I don’t but they are not hard to make. A Google search will give you lots of ideas! Glad you loved the soup!
I would love to make this with chicken breasts and also like to add some smoked paprika to it. Would this be advisable?
Yes there is shredded chicken in the recipe. You can add smoked paprika if you’d like.
Just wondering is that sodium amount correct? It looks like a fabulous recipe but that scares me a little.
It’s a computer generated estimate and will vary widely based on what kind of ingredients you use namely the chicken broth, how salty your rotisserie chicken is, other canned goods, etc. I think it’s high too but to be totally sure you’d have to calculate by hand.
Amazing love the combo of spices …. Made lots for my meal prep lunches and froze some too.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you were able to meal prep this and freeze some, great thinking!
This looks delicious! I’m wondering if I can substitute canned jalapeños? Im out of fresh ones.
Yes that is fine! Add to taste based on how spicy you like it.
There are no measurements?
In the recipe card section there are. You may have scrolled past it.
Delicious! I added an extra can of chicken broth to increase the liquid because I added pastina at the very end before adding the cilantro and needed to allow for some liquid to be soaked up. Let the pasta cook for about 5 minutes then added the cilantro and cooked for another minute. Had to adjust the seasoning a bit by adding a tad more of each spice. Came out fantastic and filling ! Served with homemade guacamole and chips :)
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you were able to tweak this to your liking and that it was perfect!
This was really good. I didn’t have boxed chicken broth so I added 4 teaspoons of Knor to 4 cups of water. The soup had a hint of spice and I loved it.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you loved the soup!
Omg this soup is delish!! I always order tortilla soup when we eat at a Mexican restaurants and this soup is restaurant quality, but even better!! I didn’t even include the jalapeño bc of my 8yo but it was still plenty flavorful. We put diced avocado and cheese on top and it was the perfect dinner for a cold night. Thank you!!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this is even better than from a restaurant! That is my goal, always :)
Absolutely Nummy! Made a double batch and froze some for 3 more meals. Shredding the rotisserie chicken took the longest, but other than that it was so easy.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you were able to double this and get some freezer meals out of it, too!
Love this recipe! I’ve made this a handful of times and it’s always a hit. Plus there’s plenty left over for my husband to take to work. Great cold weather recipe and those tortilla strips are addicting!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this is always a hit for you!
This has been my go-to chicken tortilla soup recipe for several years now. I pretty much make it as is, but swap one diced tomato can for Rotel or add 4 oz of green chiles. As a matter of personal preference, I use pinto beans not black and don’t drain. Cannot recommend this recipe enough – great for dinner and leftovers for lunch! p.s. if you want to make in instant pot, sauté the onions, jalapeno and garlic until soft and then add all other ingredients (cube raw chicken) and high pressure cook for 7 mins. Comes out perfect!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this has been your go-to tortilla soup recipe for years! Also good tip about how to adjust the recipe for the Instant Pot!
Delicious recipe! The whole family loved it even the picky eaters. I made a few changes by adding in a fresh red pepper, only used 1 can of tomatoes, used frozen corn/carrots mix, and accidentally added an extra tbsp of chili powder, which turned out great. Thank you for sharing your recipe.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad that even the picky eaters enjoyed this!
Used fire roasted tomatoes, very good!
I made a vegan version with plenty of tweaks, but this was a great base to start from! Thank you!
Sorry, I forgot the stars!
Thank you very much!
That’s great to hear!
Excellent recipe! I made it exactly as described, and it turned out delicious. I will come back to this recipe again & again!
Thanks for the 5 star review glad that you will come back to my recipe again and again!
I made this soup for myself and my husband. I followed the instructions exactly and it turned out great. I loved it and my husband said that this recipe is one for the books.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad that it turned out great!
I usually make a taco soup recipe with ground turkey and tonight I wanted something similar and just as easy. I came across this recipe and will definitely be saving it! I made it a little easier by using a packet of taco seasoning. Thanks!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad that you’ll be saving this recipe!

I made the 30 minute Homemade Tortilla Soup tonight for a small dinner party. It was a great hit. One of the best I have had/made in a long time. I will defiantly save this recipe for future use. Ready to try some of the others on this site. Thanks
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this is one of the best you’ve made in a long time!
I LOVE this recipe and make it all the time! I throw everything in the crockpot in the morning so I only have to prep the tortillas when I’m tired in the evening. Only other change I make is cutting back the tomatoes to one can as my kids don’t love tomatoes.
Thanks for the 5 star review and I am glad that you make this often and found a way to do it in your Crockpot!
I love this recipe, I’ve made it twice now and it’s very good! Thank you!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you’ve made it twice and love it!
Made this for a potluck at work. Everyone raved about it! My only small complaint is it was alot of tomatoes, but that’s minor. Multiple people have asked me to make it for them again. So good!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this was a hit at the potluck! For me I don’t find the tomato quantity too much but I love tomatoes! But if you don’t you can always just add a bit less than called for.
This is a family favorite. So quick and easy! Please don’t substitute corn chips or bagged tortilla chips. These are TOO easy to make and so very worth it!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this is a family favorite! I agree about the chips/strips too and to just make them 😊
Best Chicken Tortilla Soup ever! ***** And, super easy!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it’s the best tortilla soup ever for you!
I made this soup last night and followed the recipe, with these exceptions: no cayenne pepper and store-bought tortilla strips. My husband and I both loved it. It has earned a permanent spot in my recipe binder!
I am glad it was good enough to earn a permanent spot in your recipe binder!
Hello. I’m curious anout the nutrition information about this recipe. I have to believe the calories and fat grams per serving are way overstated. How can there be 33g of fat per serving? The only ingredients with fat are the olive oil and the tortilla strips…unless you choose to top it with cheese and/or sour cream.
It’s computer generated info and is provided as a courtesy. At times, it’s not perfectly accurate, as I suspect is the case with this recipe as you indicated. And yes, I think it assumes you are indeed topping it with cheese and sour cream. But for true values, you would need to calculate by hand, manually add up everything, divide by servings.
So easy and delicious! I made this using low sodium/low fat ingredients and it’s amazing! I skipped the tortillas because I’m trying to avoid extra carbs. I do feel it was too spicy initially so I added a little extra lime juice and a teaspoon of Splenda to cut the heat. Next time I’ll half the amount of jalapeño and cayenne pepper. This soup is amazing on its own and my entire family loved it.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad your entire family loved it! And yes just scale back on the jalapeño and cayenne pepper as you said next time based on your preferences.
Delicious! I’ve made this recipe about 4 times. Each time I get better. As a grain-free, corn-free family, I substituted the fresh tortilla strips with Sprout’s Grain-Free Tortilla chips (sea-salt flavored). I added an extra can of organic black beans and substituted two diced carrots for the corn. Perfect for a rainy Northern California evening. Served with a mixed green salad and topped with plant-based cheese, plant-based sour cream, diced avocado.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this keeps getting better and that you’ve been able to tweak it for your family’s needs. And San Diego has been in the high 40s at night, I bet it’s getting plenty chilly in Northern Cal!
I’m from Germany so I don’t know how this tastes from a restaurant but I made this recipe several times for several people and everybody just loves it. It has become one of my favourite go to recipes for dinners with friends and quick and easy dinners for myself.Thank you!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad to hear that even the Germans are loving this one :) wonderful to hear and glad it’s a go to recipe for you now!
So very easy to make!! My family just loved the soup!! Will definitely make again!!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad your family loved it and you’ll make it again!
I suggest using an immersion blender on the tomatoes before adding to the soup. I didn’t do that and my soup was watery looking with chunks of tomato. I added a can of tomato juice to give it debth. Otherwise it was very good. Made a huge pot.
Canned tomatoes vary so so much from brand to brand, consistency, texture, etc. and I’ve never need to blend them, but glad the immersion blender helped your soup get to the texture you were looking for.
I made this for me and my daughter. Unfortunately we really didn’t like the overwhelming flavor of smoked paprika. Of we make it again, I definitely would either half (or quarter) it or use regular paprika.
Are you sure you only used 1 teaspoon and not tablespoon of smoked paprika? 1 teaspoon is quite a small quantity when you consider there are probably 12 cups of soup between the beans, tomatoes, chicken, broth, etc.
I am thinking you could be confusing 1 tbsp of chili powder for the flavor of smoked paprika. 1 tbsp is a fair amount of chili powder but not excessive UNLESS it’s bitter. Some are. I am thinking that is your culprit right there, whatever brand you’re using, just my hunch.
Thanks for trying the recipe.
Yum! Only minor tweaks… Let onions/jalapeno go fully soft, added garlic for 2 min, then added spices prior to tomatoes. Really really good, bookmarked!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you have this bookmarked!
This was amazing! I usually make enchiladas with my leftover chicken, but I love tortilla soup, so one chilly evening I tried this recipe. It is fantastic. The first time I made it, I only had flour tortillas for the tortilla strips and the whole family gobbled them up. The second time, I used corn, but I actually liked the flour better. I also used a large 28 oz can of petite diced tomatoes (instead of the two smaller ones) and jarred jalapeno slices because I did not have fresh. I just guestimated how much to use. The beauty of this recipe is that you can adjust it for whatever you have on hand. Thanks so much for posting!
Thanks for the 5 star review and I am glad you have made it twice and yes, I love soup recipes like this one since they are so flexible and adaptable which I am glad you discovered as well!
Fantastic recipe on all counts; it’s easy to make, it’s a healthy meal, and it tastes amazing with lots of flavor! My husband and I are Greek and Italian, and we love fresh, delicious food. I cook all the time, but many times the recipes are elaborate, and require lots of preparation, pots and attention. I’m so happy to find a recipe that is EXCELLENT, but only uses one pot, one pan, a reasonable amount of chopping, and within 30 minutes – voila! a devious meal. (Bonus: No big clean up, either). My hubby considers himself a foodie critic, and he rated this a 10! In 10 + years of marriage, I’ve only heard him rate a 10 two other times!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this got a TEN from your husband (and there were only two other 10’s in 10 years of marriage!)!
My goal with my recipes is as you said: “a recipe that is EXCELLENT, but only uses one pot, one pan, a reasonable amount of chopping, and within 30 minutes – voila! a devious meal.” That is always in the forefront of my mind with my recipes and I’m always glad when readers notice and appreciate this!
Used half the jalapeño & no cayenne. It was still delicious & made it a bit more kid-friendly!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it was delicious and more kid-friendly!
Hey, Averie, can i use coriander instead of cilantro? Definitely I will try it in this weekend.
Thanks for sharing this awesome recipe.
If that’s what you have on hand and know going in that the flavor may vary slightly, then go ahead.
Fresh coriander *is* cilantro.
Wonderful and quick recipe I added the jalapeno with seeds and rotel…wow, it was spicy, we loved it!!
Glad it was wonderful, quick, and that you loved it! I love spicy too!
Made this tonight and it was awesome! It will be a new household staple for us. Thank you!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad that this will be a new household staple for you!
This recipe is super easy and flavorful. The flavor profile is so comforting even during a hot summer day. Thank you for sharing this recipe.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad that it was great even on a hot summer day!
This is a quick, easy to make soup. Perfect for beginner chefs. And it was so yummy. I made it exactly as written.
OH.. I forgot to give it the 5 stars it deserves!
I am glad it turned out perfectly exactly as written and thanks for the 5 stars!
This soup was amazing, I substituted chopped green chilies for the jalapeño and used taco seasoning as I didn’t have paprika – it was a bit spicy, but adding sour cream as a topping took the heat down – next time I will try it with only 1/2 teaspoon taco seasoning and add more to taste. Great recipe, my husband and I both loved it!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you both loved it and were able to make it work with what you had on hand!
I wish is used bell pepper or Anaheim instead of Jalapeño. It was too hot for my family even without cayenne.
So at that point the only singular ingredient that would have heat would be the chili powder but for the amount of liquid and other ingredients, it’s not enough to be ‘that hot’ given the volume of food.
Maybe your pepper was a hotter variety than you thought you were purchasing (that has happened to me) and that is what happened, which is my guess, because otherwise nothing listed here is spicy.
OMG! This recipe is fantastic. I fixed to the T, except didn’t add cilantro or jalapeno (personal preference), also used rotisserie chicken. Definitely will be making again! Fix it, it does not disappoint!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you loved it and will make it again!
This is so delicious! I’d never made a soup before from scratch and it was so easy. I’m going to be trying more recipes on this site this week! Hubby and I are excited.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad that you’ll be trying more recipes from my site! Please leave comments on what you try, I love to know!
We used 5 medium Roma tomatoes instead of the 28oz of canned tomatoes and it was incredibly delicious.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad that 5 Roma tomatoes rather than the canned tomatoes worked out great!
I made this for dinner and followed the recipe (almost) exactly. I didn’t have any black beans and I don’t care for cilantro, but other than that I used all the spices, etc. I made half the recipe as there were only two of us for dinner. It was ABSOLUTELY delicious. My husband was thrilled!! It’s a keeper.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad your husband loved this and glad it’s a keeper for you!
This was one of my qt goals, crushing some tortilla soup and was delish, down to the tortilla strips. I feel like a pro. Thanks babe!! – MJ Be fun to hear more about running a food blog and being a boss babe in the kitchen on my show: Keeping It Casual Podcast, you have my email! Let’s connetPS I just cant find the Pinterest button to save it so I can make it again…help pls? (Probably in front of my face 😬)
Glad you loved this recipe!
You can Pin anything by hovering over either side of the top corner of any of the photos and the Pin It buttons should appear. It depends which browser, device, etc you’re using whether it’s the R or L hand corner.
Very good and super easy to make. I used shredded chicken breast that I made in the slow cooker and fire roasted tomatoes and I substituted canned green chilies for the jalapeno. I will definitely make it again and next time follow the recipe for the tortilla strips. I used store bought tortilla chips this time.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you will definitely make it again!
Made this soup exactly as per the recipe. It was perfect and my wife loved it as well. Will be making it over and over.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it was perfect and you’ll be making it over and over!
This is the best soup, and I make it all the time. It is delicious and so easy to prepare.Thank you for posting.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you make it often and that it’s easy and delicious!
I have tried many tortilla soup recipes. This is the best and the easiest. Be sure to make the tortilla strips, they add so much to the soip.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you think my recipe is the best and the easiest!
Excellent flavor in this soup and it is very hearty. I will be making this one again.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it was excellent and you’ll make it again!
Delicious!! This was so easy to make. My favorite part = the melted cheese on top 😉We also topped this off with Greek yogurt instead of sour cream for a healthier alternative.
This is the only chicken tortilla soup I make!! Kids love it! Do you think this could all get thrown into a slow cooker as well?
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you love it. I have never done it in a slow cooker because it’s such a fast recipe, done in 30 minutes, I never like to lengthen anything that I can do quickly.
This is an excellent and easy recipe to make. Loved it!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it was excellent and easy to make!
Made the soup back in January on a cold night and I had been craving chicken tortilla soup! It was so good! Added sour cream and cheese on top was great! I froze the rest—how do you suggest to best thaw? I didn’t see that listed anywhere? Put in the fridge, put in pot straight from freezer or let it come to room temp on the counter? Thank you!!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you were able to freeze some for later!
I just thaw on the counter at room temp. Maybe some food scientists would disagree but I find trying to thaw something in the fridge that’s frozen solid like soup takes forever (12+ hours!) so the countertop is my method but do as you’re comfortable with.
First time I made it (last night) it came out amazingly well! I’m now bookmarking this recipe and planning to make it for my sister when she comes down in a couple weeks. I used vegetable bouillon instead of chicken broth (it’s what I had on hand) and used a whole jalapeno (de-seeded) like the recipe says. We couldn’t get enough! Great recipe.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you loved it!
I sent this recipe to my husband tonight. He grudgingly made it instead of his standard chicken soup. It was delicious! We made the tortilla crisps and warmed flour tortillas on the side. Thanks!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it was delicious!
WOW 🤩!!! Thanks so much for sharing. Tortilla Soup is one of my favorite foods. I never thought I’d be able to make it; but, you made it so simple and tastes just like my favorite restaurant! I’m love, love, loving this recipe! I can’t wait to make it for my mom and dad. I used my own chicken broth which I flavored while the chicken cooked on the first night. The next night, I came home and made your recipe. Absolutely delicious. Would like to see more veggie recipes.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it was delicious!
This is the best tortillas soup I have ever had!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it’s the best chicken tortilla soup you’ve ever had!
Hey Averie,
If I wanted to use chicken breasts instead of rotisserie chicken, could I put them in the soup raw and boil it? Or would you cook them separately then add them in?
Thanks!
Gabby
You could do it either way. If you cook them with the soup, you may need extra broth since they will absorb some. The overall broth will have more flavor doing it this way that if you boil them separately and then discard that water.
My family loved it! Recipe doesn’t say how many servings.
Glad it was well loved by your family!
Top line of recipe card says YIELD 10 SERVINGS
I have been craving an authentic tex mex chicken tortilla soup. I made this tonite. It was not only flavorful, it was exceptional. My daughter is a gourmet cook and has seconds! I had to substitute oven toasted tortilla chips for the corn tortillas because I did not realize I was out of them. It worked well. Their crispiness was the perfect texture to add to the soup. I had avocado, sour cream, grated mexican cheese mix, cilantro and lime to garnish. This was a wonderful and easy soup to fix. I’ll definitely add it to my regular meal rotation. SO GOOD!!!! Thank you.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this turned out so good for you and that you’re adding it into your regular meal rotation!
OMG!!! Had been craving this soup ever since I had a cup (then a bowl) from Red Robin, yes, it’s that good!! Anyway after scouring the internet I came across this recipe and am I glad I did!!!I pretty much stuck to the recipe making mostly season adjustments for my taste. I did make 2 minor changes though. 1) I thought I had chili powder. Well I didn’t and was not going back to the store so I used what I had, which was taco seasoning. PERFECT!!! 2) I still couldn’t get the taste quite to my liking so I added some Knorr chicken bouillon. I used the broth from the soup to dissolve it first and that was the missing ingredient. (I had previously added water so next time I’ll know to add chicken bouillon to the water first.)Otherwise this is a fantastic recipe!! Thank you for sharing…I think I’ll go get a bowl now!!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it turned out great and that you were able to improvise with what you had on hand, too!
So so good!! One of our new favorites.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this is one of your new favorites!
Absolutely delicious as is! I only add the whole chicken.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it was delicious as is!
Super yummy! Hubby said it’s the best he’s ever had and he orders it at restaurants all the time. This was my first attempt at ever making it so I was worried it wouldn’t turn out but it was very quick and easy! Definitely adding to our list of favs, thanks! :)
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad this lived up to the restaurant quality that your husband is familiar with and that this will be going into your regular rotation!
Absolutely delicious. I added 2 can of hominy (rinsed) and a chopped up roasted red pepper. Thanks for a great recipe.
I love hominy and bet it was great here! If you have more on hand, this is another fave hominy + Mexican-inspired recipe https://www.averiecooks.com/20-minute-easy-vegan-pozole-verde/
One of the best soups I’ve ever made/tasted! I left out the cilantro and thought it was a tinge salty, even tho I used low-sodium tomatoes and chicken broth, so you might leave the added salt out until it’s done. I HIGHLY recommend this recipe.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad it turned out really well! Yes salt is such a personal thing that if someone is in doubt, wait til the end.
I also find that cilantro for whatever reason does Cut the pendency of the saltiness of salt. I don’t know why but I have found this in my own cooking experiments. Like if I over salt salsa, by adding cilantro it marries things together and mellows the salt. Maybe because you left the cilantro out it was a little salty tasting.
This was Just fantastic. I have already shared it with 3 family members and is going into regular rotation. I didn’t change a thing and was happy I had all the ingredients. Thanks so much. You made me look good.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad this turned out great for you and I’m glad that it helped you look good to your family!
This soup recipe made it to my top 3 soups of all time list! Wonderfully complex and chock full of fabulous flavors! I’ve made it with and without the chicken broth (both are delicious), I added a lot more corn and I used a truffle salt to season the corn tortilla chips and that added an even deeper level of complexity. This recipe is such a gift; thank you for sharing it!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it makes your list of top 3 soups of all time!! I’m sure the truffle salt is a wonderful touch, too!
Wow, absolutely bursting with flavor yet simple to make!! My family loved it – it will be on the table at our house regularly from now on. I used plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream, and it was still fantastic:)
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad your family loved it and that it will be on your regular rotation!
Oh My Goodness! This soup is beyond Delicious! I used canned fire roasted diced tomatoes and Monterey Jack for the cheese. Followed the recipe as it is written and can’t say enough about how delicious this soup is, my family gobbled it up! Definitely making this soup again and adding to my favourite soup pins!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad that it turned out beyond delicious for you, that you’ll definitely make it again, and thanks for pinning!
Perfect soup for a cold night. It was easy to make and delicious! Thank you for sharing the recipe.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it was perfect for a cold night!
Super easy and yummy!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this was super easy and yummy!
This was amazing, easy and affordable and to be able to freeze leftovers is a huge bonus! My husbands exact words were “this is one of the best meals you’ve ever made”. We’ve been together for almost 12 years!
Oh wow, what high praise! I love hearing comments like this, and I bet you loved hearing it even more :) Glad it was one of the best meals you’ve ever made in 12 years for him! And as you said, easy, affordable, with freeze-able leftovers!
I made the Chicken Tortilla soup tonight for dinner and it was soooo good! I didn’t have any cilantro but that didn’t change the deliciousness.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad that it was so good and that the lack of cilantro didn’t change the delicious factor!
Delicious. So many flavors for such a simple recipe. I cooked my own chicken that was marinated in a citrus marinade, and added a dollop of Daisy at the end. Will definitely be making this again.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad that you love the recipe and that you’ll be making it again!
DELICIOUS!!!! Easy to make also.
Thanks for the five star review, glad it was delicious and easy!
Was looking for something easy to make for dinner and because is cold at night. This is very easy to make! Was very tasteful! All ingredients were exactly was is needed. Thank you very much for this easy and delicious recipe!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad it was easy and delicious for you!
Yummy for my tummy! Excellent recipe that bursts with flavor. Just what I was looking for.
Wonderful Recipe! Just what I was looking for. Excellent combination of spices and bursting with flavor.
I’m glad it turned out excellently and it was just what you were looking for!
SO SO delicious — we love this recipe like crazy. Any idea of the calorie count for a serving? Thanks!
I’m glad this turned out delicious Lee for you!
I’m in the process of updating all of my recipes to include nutritional information, but it’s a big job with almost 3000 recipes. My advice would be to enter the ingredients into an online calculator that you can find and do it that way.
However just common sense my own gut would tell me that this could not be more than 500 cal per normal serving in a bowl.
Very very delicious! Highly recommend!
I’m glad you liked it!
This is a great Chicken Tortilla Soup Recipe! I’ve made this recipe for my family a bunch of times and it is always a big hit!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you and your family have been enjoying it multiple times!
Making this for dinner tomorrow night. Any idea on if canned chicken would be okay to use?
I’m not sure because I have never used it before but if that’s all you have, I would throw it in at the very last minute otherwise it will disintegrate I am thinking.
Wow just wow, this soup was perfect! No other words do it justice, amazing!!! Family loved it, kids ate everything in their plate
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad that this was perfect and that the whole family loved it too!
What would be the approximate weight of two cups of shredded chicken? Because I cook only for myself, I don’t usually buy a whole chicken, but my freezer is well-stocked with chicken thighs.
I really don’t know the weight off the top of my head. But Google probably does :)
Best soup EVER! I have made this 2 times in the past few weeks. My guys love it!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it’s the best soup ever and you’re making it often!
Thank you ever so much Averie! This soup was by far the BEST Chicken-Tortilla Soup ever tasted ! We love spice, so I added an extra jalapeno, and it made it just perfect! Can you please advise how to save this recipe to my Pinterest? Definitely want to make again & again!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this was the best chicken tortilla soup you’ve ever tasted!
All photos have a hovering Pinterest button in the upper left hand corner so just select the photo you like and Pin It to your board.
This is so delicious! We omitted the jalapeno, but followed the rest of the recipe and it had amazing flavor, and there is plenty for more meals! Thanks!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this turned out with amazing flavor and you have leftovers for a few more meals!
This is a great recipe and came together quickly! This will definitely be a staple I make regularly. I’ve tried to find the nutrition information and have failed. My daughter and I keep food journals and the information wound be extremely helpful. Thank you.
It’s coming shortly for this recipe, within the next couple weeks. I’m in the process of updating all of my recipes.
Glad this will be a staple for you!
Unbelievably good! I’ve been cooking for many years, this is now my favorite soup recipe. I was skeptical about the short cook time but the flavors were complex and delicious. I usually poach a whole chicken at least once a week so I already had that plus the broth. Also used San Marzino tomatoes chopped up – they seem to add a richness that I can’t get from plain diced tomatoes.Thank you for the recipe!
Glad to hear this is now your favorite soup recipe and that it turned out unbelieveably good for you!
I agree, San Marzano tomatoes have such a lovely flavor, I need to try them in this soup!
I always order tortilla soup when I see it on a menu so and I have tried many since I live deep in Texas. This is absolutely delicious! I will defenitly keep this receipe. I was actually looking for a slow cooker recipe when I found this but happy to know I don’t have to wait a few hours to enjoy this soup. Thank you for sharing this with us, now I Dont have to wait until I am at a restaurant to enjoy one of my favorite soups. I did use store bought whole baked chicken and tortilla strips for salads already made so it made it even easier.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you will keep the recipe! I agree, 30 minutes is much better than a slow cooker when you don’t want to wait hours to enjoy it!
This was easy to prepare and the flavor was delicious! I chose to add the optional cayenne which made it a little spicy, which was great for me and my family because we take spice well! Topping with the avocado calmed it down a bit with each bite….Great recipe, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this turned out delicious for you!
Delicious and easy! My whole family enjoyed this, even my picky eater. This will go into our regular rotation. Thanks for a great recipe!
Glad it was delicious, easy, and will go into your regular rotation!
Averie,The 30-Minute Tortilla Soup is Marvelous. My wife said that it is definitely a ‘keeper.’ So it is now in my recipe folder with the appropriate credit to you! (In fact, I’m making it tonight. :-))
Glad this is a definite keeper and it’s now in your recipe folder and you’re making it tonite!
Can this be made without beans? If so, do you add more of something else instead? (my husband hates beans!)
Yes you can really do anything you want to to a recipe BUT it won’t taste like mine tasted. Since I haven’t experimented without using beans, not sure what else you would want to add to bulk it up. Perhaps nothing – noting it will be brothier. Or add more chicken. Or tortilla strips. Whatever you think it needs.
We ended up adding more chicken and a little extra corn…turned out great. This recipe was a winner and will be a staple in our rotation! Thank you!
Glad it turned out great and will be a staple in your rotation!
Made this for my fiancée and she said it was the best chicken tortilla soup she has ever eaten, and I agree! And we live in an area where it is everywhere.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad that your fiance said it was the best chicken tortilla soup she’s ever eaten, and that you think so as well!
Making a grocery list.Me: Would you eat that tortilla soup again?Husband: Oh absolutely, everyday for the rest of my life. Hahah! Thank you for this amazing recipe!!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad that your husband would eat it every day forever! What a huge compliment and thank you!
Thank you for such an awesome recipe! Made a few personal preference tweaks so that all of my family would eat it…green chilis instead of jalapenos, replaced 1 can of tomatoes with a can of Rotel w/lime juice & cilantro, did not add cilantro, used 48oz of broth + 1 cup of water, not sure exactly how much of the spices & salt, but probably just under double the recipe & just used store bought restaurant style white corn tortilla chips! So very good!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad it was perfect for your family with the tweaks you made!
Made it for the first time tonight. My husband and I both loved it. This recipe is a keeper!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this is a keeper for you!
My family loves this soup! I made it to add something new to our meal rotation and it is definitely a keeper! Thanks for the recipe!!!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this was perfect and a keeper for you!
This is, an amazing receipe! Super easy and super delicious!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this was easy and super delish for you!
Would it be as tasty and if so can you covert it to a crock
Pot? Thank you
You probably could but for me when something is ready from start to finish in 30 minutes, I don’t see the point of a Crock Pot and it would just unnecessarily lengthen and complicate a fast and easy recipe. But of course feel free to experiment with what’s best for you!
I’ve made this exactly as described except not using low sodium broth and it was one of the best soups I’ve ever had. Have made it using vegetable broth, flavored tomatoes or beans and it’s such a great recipe it always turns out delicious!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad to hear it was one of these best soups you’ve ever had!
This is my go to soup for neighbors who are sick or who have had surgeries. Everyone absolutely LOVES it!! Thank you so much!!!
Thanks for the 5 star review and great to hear this is your go to soup for neighbors who are sick or on the mend. How nice of you to cook for them when they need it most!
I realized too late that I didn’t have any diced tomatoes like I thought I did. I subbed in mild salsa and my goodness it was incredible!!! I think I’ll always make it with salsa, and everything else as the instructions say. Incredible flavor and consistency!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it turned out great with the mild salsa and you’ll do it from now on!
Outstanding ! So filling yet not heavy. My boyfriend delivers freight all day in chilly Buffalo NY and he will absolutely love coming home to a bowl of this! Or two! Yum. 5 huge stars! Will make again!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it’s outstanding for you! I can only imagine how much this hits the spot after working a hard job in the winter in Buffalo!
I finally found a recipe for this soup and it was actually DELICIOUS. Thank you so much! I threw in a couple dashes of Cholula – just the right amount of spiciness!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you loved the soup!
The soup was great, we all loved it. I used leftover Turkey from Thanksgiving.
I am glad you loved the soup and that your leftover turkey came in handy!
The smoked paprika is a must and added a lot of flavor depth. Would definitely make again!
Thanks for the 5 star review and I’m glad you will make this again!
This soup was delicious. It’s a keeper. I made this soup but without the tortillas and cilantro. I had roasted a whole organic chicken a couple of days ago and used the leftover chicken which was more than the recipe called for. In addition to the 3 cups of chicken broth I added the juices that remained after roasting the chicken. I left some of the jalapeño seeds, but not all, when I chopped the jalapeño and added it. It is delicious, great flavor and spices.
Thanks for the 5 star review and I’m glad it was delicious and that this is a keeper!
FANTASTIC AND EASY!!!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it was fantastic and easy!
Very good. I usually use a recipe that calls for using green chili’s and enchilada sauce, I had neither. So used yours I will continue to use your and share it. I’ve already facebooked it and sent to my kids as an easy yummy, quick dinner. You did a good job. Thanks
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you enjoyed my recipe and will continue to use and share it!
This chicken tortilla soup is amazing! Everyone raved about it! I’ll definitely be making this on a regular basis. I made it exactly as is except I used one can of regular and one can of fire roasted diced tomatoes and I added the cilantro in with the garlic to open up the flavor. I used better than bouillon base to make my broth, which is more flavorful, so I didn’t need as much salt. Thanks for this fantastic recipe!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad this will be made regularly!
Tried this recipe last night. Loved how cheap and quick it was to fix and the soup was amazingly delicious. My whole family loved it, even my picky eater ate 2 bowls. Will definitely make this again😊❤
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad that even the picky eater ate 2 bowls! Glad you’ll definitely make it again!
Nutrition Facts?
What can I use in place of the tomatoes? I don’t really care for diced tomatoes
Well if you tend to like tortilla soup, then you probably like them in this fashion because all tortilla soup recipes will generally have them. There is no substitute here for tortilla soup if that’s what you want it to taste like.
The soup was delicious. I added chili style diced tomatoes and it added a kick to it. Yummy!!!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad it was delicious!
This is officially my favorite Chicken Tortilla Soup recipe and all within 30 minutes! It is absolutely delicious. Thank you!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it’s your favorite chicken tortilla soup!
I have made this soup multiple times and we absolutely love it! Have you ever tried making it in the crockpot? I am thinking of doing it for a get together on Halloween but wasn’t sure of the time… Thanks again for a great recipe
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad to hear you love it!
For me, when something is less than 30 minutes, I would always opt for the stove rather than a CP. So you could always make on the stove and then transfer to a CP to keep warm. Or you could just make it in the CP. It would probably take a couple hours to heat through, depending on the intensity of your CP. Although the onion, jalapeno, and garlic will never get the same flavor in a CP as they would on the stove unless your CP can sear things. Some of the new ones can.
Good, but turned out tart (because of the tomatoes). If I do it again, I’d add a heaping tablespoon of sugar.
In many of my tomato-based soup recipes I do indicate to optionally add sugar at the end to taste, but in this one I don’t. No one has ever mentioned it being tart, but all tomatoes and tomato-based products vary. I’m glad it was good overall for you.
Just wondering if you have the nutritional break down, serving size? If not I’ll try and figure it out. I’ve made this before and it’s so yum! It’s my go too tortilla soup recipe
I’m glad you love it!
I am working on converting all my recipes (2500+) over into a recipe format that includes nutritional stats but I haven’t gotten to this one yet.
Okay thanks so much! I broke it down with the Lose It app with the ingredients I used for now! Thanks for taking the time to reply back and for all the hard work!
You’re welcome and thanks for visiting my site!
I love making soup. When I made this one, and later on a version of using my own recipe, my husband said it was the best soup I had ever made. The balance of spices are what make it excellent.
Glad it was the best soup you’ve ever made according to your husband! That’s high praise :)
Easy, straight forward, full flavor deliciousness that make my husband nearly fall out of his chair. He was literally moaning in soup ecstasy, and even before that when he could smell the tortilla strips baking. Top notch stuff, thanks for the amazing recipe! Can’t wait to try more of your stuff!
Thanks for the 5 star review and I glad this hit the spot for you and your husband!
I made this last night and my husband insists it is the best soup he’s ever had! I went light on the salt because we try to stick to a low sodium diet, but otherwise followed the recipe and it was outstanding. We think it was even better for lunch today, if that’s possible!!
I am glad he insists it’s the best soup he’s ever had – what a high compliment and thank you!
Averie, thank you for sharing this delicious soup recipe! I shared it with grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner with two of my Grandkids under the age of 10, and they BOTH loved it! And…yes, I even made the tortilla chips. They were so easy to make, and I felt quiet fancy garnishing the top with chips, sour cream, and cheese. One more soup receipe that feeds more than two people at a time. We love this. 🥰 Fighting Texas Aggie Class of 96
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad that the grandkids approved! And yes, topping with those homemade tortilla chips, I agree, it feels pretty fancy :)
We had a lot of left over fajita chicken meat and looked up a recipe for Tortilla Soup and came upon this one. Glad we did. It’s awesome and both of my daughters loved it. Don’t skip making the tortilla strips in the oven, it’s the best part!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad your daughters loved it! Glad you didn’t skip making the tortilla strips :)
Fantastic recipe! Doubled up on the tortilla strips. My whole family enjoyed it, even picky kiddos left their bowls empty!!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this turned out fantastic for you!
My wife had to work late and asked me to do something with the left over rotisserie chicken in the fridge. Made a quick trip to the market for some ingredients we didn’t have. I added celery, carrots & red bell pepper. About half an hour prep time. Came out great!
Thanks for the 5 star review and I’m glad that it came out great and was a perfect way to use the leftover rotisserie chicken!
I made this tortilla soup last night. My husband and I ate the whole pot!!!! It was delicious.
Thanks for the 5 star review and I’m glad it was so delicious you ate the whole pot!
This is my favorite soup recipe ever! I used one big Poblano because that’s what was in the garden, and fresh tomatoes (cherry mostly), onion from the garden as well and fresh corn. For the chicken I roasted one whole, and then made stock from the carcass (it was my day off). This has fed us 7 meals! (And there was leftover chicken) That makes it both delicious and *super* affordable!! Thank you!!! ☺️
Thanks for the 5 star review and I’m glad it’s your favorite soup recipe ever!!
The fact that you have many of the ingredients growing in your garden and made your own stock from a whole roasted chicken, I can only imagine just how incredible your soup was! And even more impressive that it’s so economical!
I can already tell this is 5 stars! As an amateur I just want to make sure I do the chicken right, I want to put raw chicken breasts into the soup – it’s my favorite way of getting it cooked and shredded to perfection. Do I need to keep the chicken in for certain amount of time? Bring to a boil? Any advise on how to cook the chicken in the soup? Thank you!!
The ingredients clearly state: 2 cups shredded cooked chicken (use storebought rotisserie chicken to save time; or roast or cook your own chicken in a skillet)
Cooked chicken only.
I love brothy soups and this one has lots of flavor.
I added some zucchini and fire roasted corn. Delicious
I am glad it was delicious!
My husband really liked this recipe. It’s probably the best chicken tortilla soup I’ve made. I’ll make it again!
Thanks for the 5 star review, glad it was the best chicken tortilla soup, and that you’ll make it again!
Sorry…my comment should say “wouldn’t” ..not would.
Haha! Yes I knew what you meant! A little spiciness and sinus clearing is good for the soul, right :)
This was amazing! Just a tip though…learn from my mistake… I used canned jalapenos, thinking canned would be too spicy…I also used the cayenne pepper…ok…to much together…but it was so good that we suffered thru it!! Can’t wait to do it right next time.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it was amazing!
This soup is the bomb. So good. Family loves it. Make it all the time. I do not use onion as I do not like onion. I also do not use the diced tomatoes but rather substitute tomato sauce. I used canned corn and it was fine. I use half low sodium/half regular chicken broth. Really excellent!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you make it all the time and your family loves it!
Excellent! I added oregano and sauted spices first. I also pulse the tortillas in food processor and add to soup to give broth more tortilla flavor, instead of adding on top. Skilled the corn too. Thanks for recipe!👍🏼
Glad it turned out excellent for you!
Wow….yet another delicious recipe. Full of flavor and the toppings just add that extra yumminess.I’ve tried a few of your recipes and love them all, thank you.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you have been loving all my recipes! I appreciate hearing that!
Best tortilla soup recipe online !!!
Thanks for the five star review and glad that you think it’s the best tortilla soup recipe!
I made this the day before for an overnight sailing trip for a large group. We heated it up on the boat and had all the “add-ins”. Everybody loved it, they all had seconds. We’re heading out on another sailing trip and I was requested to make it again.
Thanks for the five star review and glad this is a hit for your sailing trips!
I’ve made Chicken Tortilla Soup too many times to count, because, well, it’s delicious, healthy and inexpensive. This is hands-down my favorite recipe so far! I can’t wait for leftovers again tonight.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you’ve made this tons of times and that it’s your favorite!
I’ve made many delicious tortilla soup recipes but this one tops them all! My husband is begging me to save this one- he loves it so much! You will NOT be disappointed!:)
Thanks for the 5 star review and this tortilla soup tops the others and that your husband wants you to save this recipe!
Another great recipe! The smoked paprika & cayenne are must haves for this soup in my opinion. I had a small bowl in the freezer I heated up and ended up making another batch a few days later because I forgot how much I love this soup. So so good!! I always top it with a squeeze of lime, sour cream, avocado, & tortilla strips.
I am glad you loved it so much that you made another batch a few days later!
And I agree about the cayenne/smoked paprika being essential.
This is the best tortilla soup I’ve ever had in my entire life!!! I was so proud of it that I sent pics to my friends. It was super delicious. I added more lime juice because it’s a personal preference with all the soups. Wow, thank you for sharing this quick recipe. I’m very impressed.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad it’s the best tortilla soup you’ve ever had in your entire life! I love lots of lime juice too.
This was wonderful!I cubed 2 chicken breasts and browned them with the onions, jalapeño, and garlic then added the chicken broth and boiled for about 20 minutes before resuming the recipe as directed So tender, so delicious ! Thank you for the recipe I will be doing this again😋 and again.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you will make this again and again!
Thank you so much. Family loved it from my two year old to my mother in law. On a mission for new recipes and this is my family’s favorite. A+!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad this is a big hit with all ages and members of your family!
I made this for my family last night, which includes 3 teenagers and my husband. Although they are not too down with soups, they loved this! I substituted store bought tortilla strips to save time. We’ll definitely be putting this into our regular meal rotation.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad that your family loved the soup and this will be in your regular meal rotation!
Love this recipe! Easy to make and delicious. I’ve made it about 3 or 4 times.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you’ve made it a few times now.
Made this soup last night and it came out fantastic. I will be making this again.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad it came out fantastic and you’ll make it again!
This was my first time making a soup and it was simple for a new cook like myself and DELICIOUS! Will definitely make again!
Thanks for the 5 star review and I’m glad you will definitely make it again!
I have made this several times and love it so much!
Thanks for the 5 star review and I’m glad you love it so much!
I made this soup and took the chicken out and blended it before putting chicken back in. My family prefers smooth soup. Very good flavor!
Thanks for the 5 star review and I’m glad you enjoyed the soup!
Delicious! Will be a staple.in our house and very easy! Even my 2 yr old loved it :-)
Thanks for the 5 star review and I’m glad it will be a staple in your house!
Wow! I was going to just use tortilla chips, but so glad I made the tortilla strips. Yummy!!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you made the tortilla strips too:)
Fabulous! SO easy to make. We had been craving Chicken Tortilla Soup and thought we had some big-box-store-brand stashed in the freezer. We didn’t. I looked up a recipe and this was the first one I found. Thankfully we had all the ingredients in the cupboard and 30 minutes later we had this VERY tasty soup! The recipe made enough for two meals and it was even better the next day. We will never use the ready-made again. Highly recommended!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you’ll never need to use store-bought tortilla soup again!
Omigosh!! This was the best soup ever and even my picky husband loved it!
Glad it turned out great and Mr. Picky loved it as well!
I made this yesterday because I had a big leftover chicken breast. OMG! It really is the best tortilla soup I’ve ever had. It must be the combination of spices because the ingredients aren’t anything different. The soup base is SO GOOD! YUM! Husband says YUM! This is definitely going in the go-to rotation file!
Thanks for the 5 star review and I’m glad you loved it and that it’s going into your rotation!
Does the nutritional information include the tortilla strips and garnishes?
yes
This soup was amazing. Perfect amount of heat and spice without over powering. Really easy to make and incredibly tasty! This will definitely be added to the rotation. Hubby asked me to make it again next week already!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it was the perfect amount of heat and spice for you and that you will be making it already next week!
This recipe is a keeper! I made a double batch, with no changes to the recipe–RAVE reviews from all!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it is a keeper and got rave reviews without any changes to the recipe!
This soup was super yummy! I’m not a fan of jalapeños so I substituted drained, canned green chiles. Thank you for the recipe!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad the canned green chiles worked out well!
So… could I use “taco seasoning” … garlic powder.. onion powder, & paprika? I do have some limes, and avacodo tho?
I have only made it with the spices I listed. Taco seasoning in packets can also contain other things that thicken up a meat sauce so I wouldn’t recommend it.
Ooops, I meant to leave you 5 stars but missed doing so. Now you know how much we loved this soup!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you absolutely love the soup!
This was ABSOLUTELY delicious! We had some extra rotisserie chicken in the fridge and wanted to make something other than chicken noodle or rice soup. My family went nuts over the flavors of this soup and it was a home run. In fact, my husband just bought more ingredients so I can match another batch for freezing.
Thank you, Averie!!
This was a great base for an authentic tasting tortilla soup. I had to add a couple of Serrano chilies sans seeds, and cook in the crockpot and it was FABULOUS!
We like our soup SPICY!
Thanks for sharing!
Glad it delivered for you and I too love spicy… I write my recipes for people who don’t but personally love the heat and spice and I’m sure some serranos were great!
I made this and it was a huge hit! I added Goya seasoning for a little kick! So much yum!!!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad that it was a huge hit!
I made the soup for a late lunch here at our cabin in Northern Michigan. It was delicious! I wasn’t careful when I added fresh squeezed lime juice (added more than what recipe calls for) and it was still amazing. I have never made tortilla strips home made before this and probably will never need to purchase them in the store again -mine were so much better. Next time I’ll use corn oil instead of EVO to see how flavor changes. Lastly, I used a fresh chicken breast chopped into pieces and sautéed it with the onions & garlic – that made it a one-pot meal! This recipe will be a regular here at our cottage.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad the recipe will be a regular for you!
Could I Substitute something for the
Cilantro??
I would just omit it if you don’t like it or don’t have it.
Flat leaf parsley actually works well if you dislike cilantro (I despise it) but you still want that fresh herby top note to your soup. Plus it’s exactly the same amount of pretty for a garnish. :)
It was pretty easy to make this and my husband loved it so much, that he had three helpings of it the night that I made it! Going to make it again tonight! A quick and tasty weeknight meal!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you are making it again tonight!
Best Tortilla Soup I’ve every had
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad it’s the best tortilla soup you’ve ever had!
Very yummy! My family loved it. Will definitely be in the rotation. :)
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad your family loved it and that it will be in your rotation!
I really enjoyed this chicken tortilla soup recipe and will definitely make it again!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you will make it again!
This is the perfect Chicken tortilla recipe! I have been making it about 10 years and this one is the best I every tried!
Thanks for letting me know this is the best recipe for chicken tortilla soup that you’ve ever tried!
Made this tonight! So good. We didnt have Jalapenos and it still turned out great! Going to make a big batch and freeze some.
Glad it turned out great and that you’re going to make some to freeze!
I’ve made this twice and this recipe will be a staple in my house from now on. This soup is incredible. The lime, cumin, and cilantro make this soup. I could eat it every day. Thanks for posting.
I’m glad it will be a staple for you and that you’ve already made it twice now!
Wow! This soup is incredibly delicious! Will definitely become something I will make weekly.
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad it’s something you will make weekly!
This soup is fabulous! I didn’t put lime juice in, simply because I didn’t have any. The tortilla strips on top of the soup gave it such a nice crunchy texture, and then with sour cream and Monterey Jack cheese…well, ooolala! My husband was raving about it! He had two big bowls. Oh, I also ended up putting more corn in, too, because I like a soup with lots of girth. Lol It’s really super good!
I’m glad you loved it so much!
Turned out great. The cooking instructions were a big help for those of us who don’t cook at this level often. Most of the ingredients were items most of us already have in the kitchen. I substituted turkey broth and turkey leftovers for this soup and it turned out just fine.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad that my instructions were helpful and that you had most of the ingredients on hand, too. If you have extra turkey/broth this is also a good one https://www.averiecooks.com/easy-30-minute-turkey-noodle-soup/
Made this with a friend last night. It was delicious! Will definitely make again!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you’ll definitely make it again!
I forgot to say, I add a can of original rotel :) Thanks again!
LOVE this recipe! I’ve been looking for something that’s not too spicy and taste as good as I remember it as a child. This is it!! Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this brought back some childhood memories!
My hubby ask me to find an recipe on Tortilla soup and i did. this one caught my eyes. So, I tried this soup last night an it was really good. I forgot to get some jalapeno so i used green chiles peppers and it turn out really tasty didn’t have to add extra seasoning. Will make again. Thanks
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad it came out great for you!
My hubby ask me to find a tortilla soup recipe online I found several ones, but this one caught my eyes..so I tried it..glad I did really good. I thought I had jalapenos but I didnt so I use green chili peppers and it turn out really nice and tasty..didnt have to add extra spices to it.
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Do you have to add the jalapeño?
I guess no but in order for it to have authentic flavor I do recommend it. It really doesn’t make it spicy if that’s what you’re concerned about. Or maybe add half the recommended amount.
Best recipe ever. I was at a friend’s house and didn’t have my recipe with me and this was perfect!
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you think this is the best recipe ever!
I changed a few things about this recipe. Instead of shreding the chicken, I cut it into very small bite sized pieces. Then, I sauted the chicken with the onion, jalapeno, garlic, and spices in a cast iron skillet. I followed the rest of the ingredients and steps after this from the recipe. It turned out delicious.
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad your preparation method worked out great for you!
Just made this for the family and they RAVED about it. I replaced the jalapeño with green chili and I added a teaspoon of chili garlic sauce (I do that to every soup I make). Amazing!!!! Thank you for sharing this recipe.
The chili garlic sauce sounds like a great idea. Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you loved the chili!
5 STAR RECIPE ABSOLUTLEY PERFECT WOULD NOT ALTER RECIPE AT ALL. MY FAMILY LOVED IT❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad you would not alter the recipe and that your family loved it!
I made it tonight. Delicious!☺
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this turned out delicious!
The best chicken torilla soup recipe ever!!! Thank you so much for sharing it. I make this soup almost every week. My family and friends love it! I boil my chicken and use the broth from it so good! If I were to want to make a bigger pot. Would I just double the amount of spices? Thank you again for sharing this amazing recipe ❤️
Thanks for the five star review and I’m glad that you think it’s the best chicken tortilla soup recipe ever!
The best chicken tortilla soup recipe!! I make it almost every week. Everyone I make it for becomes addicted! I like to boil my chicken and use the broth from it. Thank you so much for sharing. If I were to want to make a bigger pot would I just double the spices?
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you make it almost every week and that everyone loves it!
Yes just double everything if you are doubling the recipe.
So good! Just be careful when adding the jalapeño, it can get really spicy.
Thanks for the five star review and glad you like the soup!
My now favorite go to chicken tortilla soup!! This recipe is Delicious & everyone loved it! I baked and shredded my own chicken and followed recipe as is. It took longer than 30 minutes with all the chopping and prep but well worth it. It makes a huge pot of soup. Highly recommend
Thanks for the five star review and glad it’s your new fave chicken tortilla soup!
Could I put this in the crockpot?
Probably but it’s done in 30 minutes which is why I don’t bother.
Super simple and fast and extremely delicious! What every home cook wants!!

I make this all the time for friends who aren’t feeling well and for our family all fall and winter long. This is a hit with every single person I’ve made it for! I don’t like some of the ingredients on their own, but all together, this is AMAZING!! I’m so thankful for your recipe!!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this is a hit with every single person who’s tried it!
I tried this recipe last night and just have to say, it was better than any restaurant tortilla soup I have ever eaten. I didn’t use the jalapeño bc my stomach is sensitive to hot foods but I did use a few red pepper flakes. I was trying to use pantry items I had.. The other change I made was I used the new Bush’s black bean Fiesta ones. Great addition. I used one can petite diced tomatoes and 1 can of Muir Glen organic crushed tomatoes, plus 1 small can of mild green chilis. It was a perfect balance of flavors and we are eating leftovers tonight!!
Glad that this came out better than any restaurant tortilla soup and that you were able to use pantry items too!
I just made this soup and it’s AMAZING! I doubled the broth and the seasonings and added tumeric for the health benefits and you don’t even know it’s there! Thank you for an awesome, quick recipe.
Thanks for the five star review and glad you loved the soup! I love turmeric as well and I can imagine it would be great in here.
Very tasty soup, but did make a few changes. Used Tabasco instead of jalapeños, and added some tomato sauce for a thicker consistency. Used store bought tortilla strips and a dollop of sour cream for the topping. Will definitely make again
Glad you enjoyed it and will make it again!
Awesome soup. Thanks
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you loved it!
Absolutely delicious. I love finding recipes I can make quickly and it is so nice to pick up a rotisserie chicken and be half way done with my meal prep. This is by far the best chicken tortilla soup I have ever had. Very spicy and enjoyable. This is going on my favorites list so I can make often.
Thanks for the 5 star review and you think this is by far the best chicken tortilla soup you’ve have ever had!
Amazing and super easy to make. I added baby carrots and more garlic. Also 2 cans of the chicken broth and crushed tomatoes. My husband says it is the best he has ever had. This is about the 4th time I have made this tortilla soup! Thank you this is my go to recipe for a hearty soup.
Thanks for trying the recipe and glad your husband said it’s the best he’s ever had!
Delicious! Make this all the time. It is super easy, delicious, and a GREAT way to use up leftover chicken. Thanks so much for this fantastic recipe ♥
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad you make this all the time!
Amazing, delicious, easy, love it!
Thanks for the 5 star review and glad this was amazing for you!
I tried this recipe tonight, adding only about 3/4 teaspoon salt (not the full 2 teaspoons) and I also added 3 carrots, thinly sliced on a diagonal, with the onion and jalapeno pepper. The mixture of spices was perfect. …Delicious! I will make this again. Thank you!
Thanks for trying the recipe and glad it came out great for you!
I made this tonight and it was perfection ! My fiancé doesn’t like tomatoes or onions but it smelled so good he ate it anyways. I put a little less than one can and of tomatoes and opted for 3 cups of chicken broth and one of water. My fiancé is getting seconds so it’s safe to say he loved it.
Glad your non tomato or onion liking fiance loved the soup! That’s awesome and glad he even had seconds!
Made this exactly as printed and me and my husband loved it!!!! Will make it again. Used only one teaspoon of salt and didn’t have to add any more.
Thanks for trying the recipe and glad you will make it again exactly as printed!
I have made this recipe multiple times with very much success. It always turns out fantastic and it is my go-to chicken tortilla soup recipe.
Thanks for this recipe!
Glad you love it and that it’s your go-to recipe!
Love the recipe for Tortilla soup. My husband is from Texas and we live in South Carolina. He begs me to make Mexican dishes. He said this was the best recipe yet. I loved that it was tasty quick and easy. Thank you and we will be making it again. Do you have any other Mexican recipes you care to share?
Thanks for the nice compliments and glad this was a big hit for you!
https://www.averiecooks.com/tag/mexican Here are dozens to keep you busy!
Can this soup be made in an instant pot?
Perhaps but I don’t see the point. It’s ready in 30 mins on the stovetop. In an Instant Pot, maybe it’s ready in 20 mins? but since I haven’t developed the recipe I can’t give specifics.
I Make this soup all the time and recommend it to everyone! So good!!
Thanks for trying the recipe often and glad you’re recommending it!
Delicious soup, great for cold weather. I used an immersion blender before adding chicken and corn and left out the black beans because I didn’t have any. Topped with shredded cheddar. Yum!
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you!
I used petite unsalted tomatoes like it calls for and I found the tomato flavoring to be overwhelming. Overall it’s a good, easy recipe if you’re in a pinch. If I make it again I’ll just lessen the amount of tomatoes. Thanks!
Traditional tortilla soup is pretty strongly tomato-based, even more so in Mexico than my recipe, but if you find it to be too overpowering for your taste, feel free to reduce as necessary.
Thank you for this recipe! Your instructions were very clear, and I was happy that the ingredients were almost all on-hand in my house. There are only a handful of recipes that my whole family loves, and this apparently made the list. My two-year old said something to the effect of “I love this soup.” I omitted the jalapeño and cayenne and added a splash of broth to the kids’ bowls to tone down the spiciness.
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad your kids loved it and that you had almost all the ingredients on hand!
Oh My God! The Homemade Chicken Tortilla Soup was phenomenal! Phenomenal I tell ya!!!!!! I got full and wanted to keep going just for the taste. It was the first time having it. I told my wife anytime the temperature is below 80 at night, it’s a good time to have Chicken Tortilla Soup. Whoooooo hooooo, it was awesome! I want more…. I’m full and I want more! I’ll be back…..
Thanks for the super enthusiastic praise!! Glad you loved this so much and that you’re already wanting more!
This is so delicious. I added a small can of diced green chilis. My family loved it.
The chiles are a great idea! Glad you all loved it!
I always crave tortilla soup from our favorite Mexican restaurant. Never again! This soup was so much better in so many ways. And that broth….. AMAZING!!
Thank you for sharing!
I am so glad you loved it (even more than the restaurant version)!!
Made this recipe twice in two weeks, will definitely make it again. Love it, so hearty and filling.
Thanks for trying the recipe and glad it’s a new favorite!
What is the sodium level on your soups?
I use low sodium products where ever possible and recommend doing the same. Cook your own chicken if you’re concerned because rotisserie chickens tend to be pretty salty. Depending on the products you use will cause the sodium levels to vary widely.
HOLY COW ! So amazing. Thank you.
Glad you are loving it!
I plan on trying this recipe tonight and looking forward to it. What is the actual serving size? I know it says it yields 10 but how many cups is serving size? Thank you in advance.
Honestly, I don’t measure it down to the ounce. It’s a computer program and the information is a rough estimate. A normal sized bowl is what I use. That’s probably about 1 cup.
Love this chicken tortilla soup ‘so good, thanks so much for the recipe, will definitely make it again :)
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad the recipe came out great for you!
Made this delicious soup, but used some crumbs from the bottom of my fav tortilla chip bag (La Cocina de Josefina).
And I used fresh Jalapeño from my pot garden but it was so mild. Nothing a dash or two of tabasco couldn’t fix though!
Perfect for our sub-50’s temps in Fairbanks, Alaska, right now!
Glad this hit the spot in Fairbanks! Still 80+ in San Diego :) Not quite soup weather but I’m making it anyway!
I usually don’t take the time to comment on recipes but with this one I just had to. I followed the recipe exactly using rotisserie chicken and added a cup of water. I also a finely chopped up potato and threw it in the pot. I can’t get over how delicious this soup was! Thank you so much for the recipe. I have printed it and plan on making it again very shortly.
Thanks for commenting, always appreciated when someone loves a recipe! Glad you’ll make it again!
Very tasty!!! I’m a whimp about spicy things but this was just right. I didn’t have any cilantro but was still very good without!
Glad it was perfect for you – including the heat level!
This sounds awesome. How do I send it to my email address?
Copy/paste in an email to yourself.
Been looking for a great tortilla soup recipe and yours sounded so good I tried it this evening and it was perfect! Seasoning was spot on and tortilla chips were so easy to make and added that perfect texture. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you!
I always double the recipe because the only thing better than tortilla soup Tuesday is leftover tortilla soup Wednesday. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this recipe. I use a piece of green pepper instead of the jalapeño and I omit the cayenne because my kids don’t like spicy, but it’s still so flavourful!
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you!
I’ve been wanting to make chicken tortilla soup for a while and stumbled across your recipe. Reading it through, I could tell it would be really tasty and quite spicy based on the quantity of the “hot spices” and jalapeno. I reduced the chile powder and cumin by half, and omitted the cayenne pepper and it still came out medium hot spicy – perfect for me and a little hot for my husband. It was so delicious and I especially enjoyed the home-baked tortilla strips. Adding the sour cream, avocado and cheese “cooled” the spiciness down just enough. Perfect soup to warm up on a cold day like today . Canned whole corn works well as that is all I had on hand. One 14-ounce can yields the correct quantity. I made my own chicken stock several days ago and used it in this soup. Thank you for sharing the recipe.
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you with the spice modifications and corn you used!
This was fantastic and delicious!! thanks for the recipe…This will be my go to for chicken tortilla soup from now on.
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you!
Thank you for this Chicken tortilla soup recipe. I was looking for a soup to make for a sick friend and decided to try this. I don’t like a lot of heat spices so I cut back on that. But I thought this soup was beautiful, had a wonderful aroma and could not have tasted more to our liking. This was the first time I tried the jalapeño pepper (without the seeds). Thank you for such a good recipe. You made me look good!
Glad you loved it and thanks for saying I make you look good :) That’s such a nice compliment!
I made the soup last night and oh my gosh it was soooooo good!!!!! I added a cup and a half of water at the end and also let it simmer for an hour instead of 10 min because I wanted the onion and pepper to cook down a little more, but it was amazing. Great recipe!
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you! You could also cook them down more in the beginning too. Caramelize them more in that stage and you won’t have to simmer as long at the end, but either way works!
Just made this. So good!!!!! Will add to our regular rotation this winter.
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you! Glad it’s going into rotation!
I’m making this today… But I need to make it for 15 people.. What ingredients should I double or increase?
I’d make a double batch in order to serve 15.
Thank you So much.. I made it last night.. and it was a HIT… From teenagers to Aunts, Uncles, grandparents and neighbors. All loved it.. There was enough for one more bowl. My daughter and I played rock, paper, scissors to see you got to take it for left overs today.. I won and im eating it right now for lunch!
So glad it was a hit with everyone! Lucky you that you got the leftovers for lunch!
Easy yes. But even more important, delicious. Spectacularly so. I followed the recipe to a tee, using yellow instead of vidalia onions, and leaving off the avocados (see the price of these in California this week? Ouch).
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you! I live in San Diego and the past few weeks I’ve noticed teeny tiny avocados are $1.99 or $2.99 each unless you want to buy a bag of like 6 or 8…
I threw all the ingredients in my crock pot before class this morning and this will be our dinner tonight!! I’m so excited.
Awesome let me know how it turns out in your slow cooker!
Do you think this soup can be done in a crockpot?
Possibly but it all comes together in 30 minutes or less and you’d have to cook the veggies first in a stockpot and then to transfer it all to a crockpot which seems like extra effort to me personally, but you could play around with it and see how it goes.
Loved this soup! I prefer mine a little creamy so I added heavy cream but it was great!
Creamy Chicken Tortilla Soup sounds great! Glad you loved it!
I haven’t made soup in a while, and hubby said he was missing the tortilla soup we used to get in TX. So I hit up Pinterest, and came across your recipe. Although our favorite place in TX didn’t use black beans and corn, I kept them in to try it your way. After all, no 2 places make the same tortilla soup and every family has their own recipe for this same soup.
I made a few slight changes, but nothing to affect the integrity of the original recipe – 1. doubled it right off the bat (we love tortilla soup, and I had a feeling about this recipe after reading it all the way through). 2. used a can of 28 ounce petite diced tomatoes instead of the 2 mentioned, since I had those in my pantry. 3. I doubled the recipe, so I left the seeds in 1 jalapeno and removed them from the other. 4. My husband is not a cilantro fan, but I am so our compromise is I add a little dried cilantro to the soup while it cooks, then a little fresh to mine when I dish it out. 5. I omitted the salt completely until it had all cooked together a bit to make sure it would be too salty.
After I brought it to a boil, it cooked on a low simmer on the stove for about 30 minutes. I tasted the broth and tweaked the seasonings for our house – a few more shakes of cumin, chili powder, added salt to taste here (as I mentioned, I did not use the 2 tsp as called for – I would say I maybe used a tsp after it cooked together), and a little more fresh lime since my first lime wasn’t really juicy enough to make 1 Tbsp of juice. I let it simmer until we were ready to eat, so it maybe cooked on low for an hour max.
I served it with store bought organic tortilla chips, diced avocado, and lime wedges (plus the little bit of fresh cilantro in mine). Just as I suspected, this is a great soup and we really loved it!!!! If I removed the corn and black beans, added diced celery and carrots to the onions while cooking, and added some cooked white rice to the soup, this would be DARN close to the one we got back in TX we loved so much!!! However, we both agreed we liked it this way.
This is definitely a great find for a good healthy meal after work in a flash. I cook off chicken in my Crockpot, shred it up, and freeze it in 1 cup portions to have on hand for recipes like this, so I can put it together in no time. This is a KEEPER, and my husband has already requested the leftovers with a salad tonight for dinner. So glad I came across this recipe!!!! Thank you for sharing it :)
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you! Glad it’s a keeper!
I made this chicken tortilla soup today for lunch – it was simple, quick and delicious! Thanks for the recipe, I have already forwarded your link on to friends and will check out your other recipes :)
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you! Thanks for sharing the link with your friends!
Awesome soup! I used corn tortillas to thicken my soup, it make it very hearty and it’s still gluten free! Thanks for the tips for making it a quick meal! – Gluten Exodus
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you!
This was awesome! Made it tonight for dinner. Got thumbs up from my 26 year old son. Added some red, yellow, and green bell peppers in the mix. Added the spices and sautéed a minute before adding the liquids. Used a rotisserie chicken which made it super easy and quick to throw together. Added the cilantro to individual bowls when serving as I love the freshness it adds to a dish. Baking the corn tortilla strips pulled it all together! Thanks for a great soup recipe! Looking forward to trying more of your recipes!
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you! You sound like a great cook and can improvise and make things work out, and even get a thumbs up from your son :)
This was a great recipe! I used a 28oz can of tomato sauce instead of the 2 cans of diced tomatoes, and it made the soup into a really nice, thick texture! I also omitted the black beans (I didn’s have any) and added 1 tsp. of coriander.
YUM!
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you! It’s also a very flexible recipe as you found out and glad your swaps worked great!
Thank you very much for this recipe! I made it for dinner last night and my family loved it. I enjoyed how filling and flavorful it turned out yet how quick and easy it was to make with inexpensive ingredients. I’ll definitely check out more of your recipes.
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you! I try with my recipes to have them be quick, easy, and use everyday ingredients and glad it all worked out for you!
Very good soup but I will make it with half the salt next time.
Glad you liked it and yes, salt is one of those very personal preference type of things – and some brands are saltier than others, as is chicken broth, rotisserie chickens, etc. Just salt to taste.
Thank you for sharing your recipe for homemade chicken tortilla soup. It’s the best we have ever had. We barely spoke through dinner because we were so busy enjoying the soup ??
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you! Glad it’s the best you’ve ever had!
Best soup ever!! I make it twice a week, my boys love it and so do I! Thank you so much for this recipe ;))
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you! And that you make it twice a week!
I love tortilla soup, and have made this recipe many times, so I thought it was about time I sang its praises. It always turns out great, and couldn’t be easier to make; a bit of dicing, chopping & shredding…open a few cans, and voilà…soups on! I like that you can spice it up or down according to your taste (I like mine with a “kick” to it!).
Thanks for trying the recipe last night and I’m glad it’s a favorite of yours!
Wondering if you could cook the chicken in the soup? I make my chicken and rice soup by adding raw chicken breasts in and taking it out and shredding it and adding it back in–gives it extra flavor!
You probably could play with the recipe to do that but I haven’t tried it so can’t make recommendations about exactly what to do, how long to cook for, when to take it out, how to make sure the vegetables then don’t become over-cooked, etc.
I made this soup for my cooking class presentation, and everyone enjoyed it so much!! I was wondering if you could substitute fresh tomatoes in for the canned ones, and if so, how much would be a good amount? Thanks for this recipe, love it! :)
Yes you could likely use fresh, although I haven’t personally tried, and you’d want to use approximately the same amount of fresh as I have used with canned, but again just guessing as I haven’t done it that way.
This was seriously amazing!! So flavorful and a touch of spice! My hubby approved. It was so easy and we have leftovers for a couple days. Thanks for a great recipe! I’ll be making it again :)
Thanks for trying the recipe and I’m glad it came out great for you!
