Kitchen Knives Giveaway

I recently received these two knives from Big Kitchen

Mercer Renaissance Forged Riveted Hollow Edge Santoku Knife, 7 Inch

Mercer Renaissance Forged Riveted Chef’s Knife, 8 Inch

If there’s one piece of kitchen equipment that is mandatory, it’s a good knife.

Trying to cook, chop, slice ‘n dice, and simply be productive and efficient in the kitchen is impossible without a proper knife. Lightweight, flimsy, and dull knives are intolerable and I won’t use them.

When I am in the kitchen, I tend to put one (big) knife in my hand and keep it there until everything is chopped, sliced, minced, quartered, cut, and ready. Paring knives and smaller knives have their place, but I prefer bigger knives, in general.

Don’t be scared of the Big Guns.

From cleaning and slicing pineapple

To chopping oranges and cucumbers for and Cucumber Orange Dill Relish

…Not a day goes by where I don’t have my knife and cutting board out and in use. Repeat x17 times. Before noon on most days.

These Mercer knives are built solidly, feel nice in my hands, are heavy enough but not too heavy, and most importantly, they get the chopping job done.

  9. Thanks for the giveaway…our favorite knife in the kitchen is an “ancient” chef’s knife that used to be my grandmother’s: razor sharp blade, hints of rust, with a wooden handle worn smooth from decades of use…use it to prep vegetables and cut the kid’s sandwiches !

    senorpiero [at] yahoo [dot] com

  10. My current favorite knife is wusthof 8″ classic.I use it everyday it’s razor sharp and it’s my go to knife

  11. I tend to cook a lot with onions so I would say I cut those the most! And my favorite knife is a cutco!

    michedt at yahoo . com

  13. I have a large knife that I like to cut everything with but it has become very dull(but I still use it).

  14. I have knives that have cost a lot more, but my fave is probably the paring knife given to my (farmer) husband many years ago by a seed corn company. I think I use it every day and it’s still in great shape. Thanks DeKalb!

  19. I am forever chopping fresh vegetable—onion, celery, mushrooms, peppers, for my stir fry’s. Need a good knife for this.

  20. I have no “one knife” or even a series of knives. We have a knife set, but none of them are ‘special’ except for one bread knife (not part of the set) that my mom gave us.

I’d love to have a special knife. I see the chef’s on tv have their faves. We do a lot of cooking. Lots of fruit and veggies.

  21. I use my paring knife for almost everything, like chopping avocados, watermelon, cauliflower, onions, etc. I would love to have some great bigger knives.

  22. I mainly use my big knife to cut meats (chicken, beef, etc) and my santoku knife for cutting vegetables.

  23. I do not have a favorite knife. I use my knoves to cut and chop beggies and fruit, slice meat ,.

  24. Mercer is definitely some of the best knives I’ve come across. I own one standard Mercer chef’s knife and I just refuse to use anything but that one. German steel is the best kind!

  28. My wife and I use out very basic set of Kitchenade knives almost every day. It was a wedding present from my cheap-o brother… I think the set of 12 (including 6 “steak” knives) ran something like $30. They function, but we have to sharpen and hone them weekly. I’m just waiting for a knife to break and then it’ll be time to get a “real” set.

  29. my favorite knives are my kenkel and kuhn rikon knives, they both sharpen easily and stay sharp forever! i use them to prepare food for my family and friends!

  33. I tend to use my knives most for chopping up vegetables like asparagus, brussel sprouts, and broccoli.

  34. It’s embarassing to admit that out of the dozen knives in our utensil drawer. Only ONE works on most foods. The others are just a hazard to even attempt with.

  35. I use my steak knives for everything because of the serrated blade. I sure could use a big knife.

  36. I have a set of sabitere knives from france. excellent but getting dated. These would make a nice addition to my set.

  37. I already follow you on Pinterest, and just repinned one of your awesome kid-friendly no-bake snack bars! :-)

  41. I have a medium size serrated knife that I use for so many things. It’s wonderful for pineapples and slicing everything.

  42. I’m in love with my chef’s knife! I’m a huge salad fan, so I use it to chope just about anything and everything. Never used a santoku knife before, though! I’d love to have a really good set.

  43. My favorite knife is a Guy Fieri knife, a very little one, not a paring knife but sort of mini santoku. I really need some good knives.

    1. Funny you write this..I was trying to secure a Guy F. knife for this giveaway because they look great!

  44. My favorite knife is currently a knife that’s been with my family for as long as I’ve been old enough to be trusted with a knife in the kitchen. The name brand has even been rubbed off, but the knife still cuts true each time it gets sharpened by hand.

  45. Oh my! I really need a knife! I do not have a favorite knife because I only have steak knives that are as old as dirt! I get by using them, but believe me I would love to win these! My old steak knives have been ok, but these would be GREAT!

  46. 1. What’s your current favorite knife and how often do you use it? (links welcome)

Have one i bought at the supermarket after a demo, and use it to saw frozen hamburger…mostly eat steak with it

  47. I hate all the knives I currently have, but the best one I ever owned was a ceramic knife that could cut through anything, but it got chipped and was no longer useable. These knifes look sturdy.

  48. I have a Zwilling J.A. Henckels knife I got as a wedding gift and it is awesome! I use it every day to chop something up for dinner!

  49. My husband is the chef in the family and he needs a good set of knives. Also, we’re on the Atkins diet so lots and lots of vegetable chopping going on in my household. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  50. I’ve got a Cutco knife that is great for trimming meat. We are big pasta fans, so I probably only use this knife three times a week.

  51. I have some pretty horrible knives right now :( I lust after the knives at Williams and Sonoma constantly but definitely can’t spend the money right now! Funny story actually… I got suckered into buying a knife set at Kroger (of all places…the horror! I am so embarrassed to admit this!) during a demo. The knives could literally chop into ANYTHING. That, or the salesman was a pro! haha. Anyway, I would LOVE a beautiful knife!

  52. My best knives are from Pampered Chef. I know, not on your radar, but they were a gift and considering what I had prior, they are pretty amazing. I use them almost daily.

  53. My current knife is a small pairing knife, it works perfectly for most tasks. Unfortunately my bigger knives are so dull they couldn’t cut through butter!

  54. I really like the few Cutco knives I have- hubby used to work for them. But those are the only nice knives I have- I’d love to win these! :)

  55. My favorite knife is my 10-inch Zwilling Henckels 4-star stainless steel chef, and I use it every single day, usually for at least two or three separate bouts of cooking. Knives! The most important kitchen tools ever!

  56. I’ve had a set of Armstrong Forge knives practically forever and would love to have some new knives. My 8″ Chef’s Knife gets the most use, pretty much every day.

    1. I have the same set, and I have recently misplaced one of the steak knives, which drives me crazy to see that empty space in the skeak knife row! If you are replacing yours, would you consider selling me one or some of them or I could trade you something I might have that you could want. Let me know by e-mail, okay? This is in reference to Gaye M’s Armstrong Forge knife set. Thank you!

  57. Right now, I’m in desperate need of a knife.. mine is cheap and not very useful. :( I think these could be my favorite!

  58. No favorite, just random cheap knives. I use the food processor a lot, but I cut anything that I don’t want that small or that the food processor won’t do a good job on.

  59. My current favorite is a Wusthof Classic 6″ chef’s knife. I didn’t think I’d like it because I was worried it would be too small, but it’s perfect for me. :)

  60. We needed better knifes so when I saw a deal on a Tom Douglas by Pinzon Wenger 10-Inch Butcher Knife and bought it. Despite the ugly, cheap looking handle it’s actually a pretty good knife that kind of looks like a machete. We use it for everything.

  61. I love good kitchen knives but only have one good one since my (then) 12 year old son decided to play ninja knives with my other two good ones and nicked them. *sigh. I used my 8″ Wustoff knife for cutting and chopping everything. I makes a lot of different kinds of salads so this is mostly how it is used, but also use onion and garlic in most dishes and it will chop them nicely too.

  62. Honestly, I can’t even tell you the brand name of our knives. But I use them every night to chop onions, garlic, mushrooms, etc… marthalynn16 at gmail

  63. I have a couple of knives but I pretty much always end up using my santuku. It’s not a very nice knife quality wise, but the shape and weight just feel right. Would love to replace it with something nice!

  64. I don’t really have a favorite knife. I recently bought 2 sharper image knives but they stink and can barely cut through a carrot! I would love to win these knives so I can have an easier times chopping up my salads!

  65. I found an 8″ ceramic knife on clearance at TJ Maxx for $2 while I was Christmas shopping & grabbed it for myself :) .. it’s surprisingly sharp & it works GREAT, I just wish it were green instead of pink. Use it ALL the time for chopping vegetables & fruit!

  66. i use the knives set that my husband had before we got married and it works pretty ok!
i mainly use the large one for chopping up large amount of veggies, greens, meats, and sometimes baked bars.

  68. Santokus are always my family – I need a few new knives for my new kitchen! :)

  69. I use knives to chop up all kinds of fruits and veggies. In fact, I think that’s pretty much all I use them for! I don’t use any specific knife, just the ones I’ve had for years. Which is probably something I should change, but I don’t really think about it much!

  70. My loved knife is a chef’s knife from Chicago Cutlery. I love that it’s heavy enough and cuts everything! I’m like you with the cutting boards; always picking the small one when cutting lettuce. Happens every time. Lettuce gets everywhere. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  71. My mom bought me a ceramic knife, which I’m loving and using every day. I need more knives, for sure!!

  73. I have a set of Rachel Ray knives but have used them incorrectly and broke the tip off one :)

  76. I definitely find myself slicing onions and mincing garlic on a very frequent basis! These knives are beautiful. They would make those tasks more enjoyable :-).

  77. We use these Henkles. They are great but haven’t been sharpened in a while.. so I could use some new ones for sure!

  78. I guess onions would be the thing I cut up the most in my kitchen.

Seems like we use half an onion a day.

I don’t have a favorite knife, I just make do with whatever is available.

  79. good knives are necessary to make ratatouille (one of the most chopping-intensive dishes) out there!

  80. My favorite knife now is a williams sonoma santoku knife. I use it on everything (fruit, meat, opening wrappers…)

  81. i can’t answer those questions, because i don’t own any nice knives! eek!

    love your blog! :)

  82. I stumble upon your site through Pinterest. You’ve got some amazingly tasty looking stuff here. Can’t wait to try some of it for Cinco de Mayo!

  83. Apples. I like to dip my apples in almond butter, and it’s so much easier once they’re chopping up. I’d love to have a good knife for it!

  89. I’ve been using my set of Rachael Ray Furi knives I got for my wedding 2 years ago… they are AMAZING knives, but in need of a good sharpening! A brand new set, like those in this giveaway, would also be nice :)

  90. Good knives are key in the kitchen! I always need a good knife for cutting pineapple and squash!

  91. None of my knives are good…so none are really my faves, but I think that a good chef’s knife and a good paring knife are the most important!

  102. I am in desperate need of a nice big ole knife! I currently use a cheap brand from Target… :-/ I have one that I favor over all my others and I literally use it for everything and have to wash it a bazillion times a day!! Grrr

  103. Several years ago my wonderful son gave me a Global Chefs Knife. I use it for almost everything. Everyone who cooks needs to have good sharp knives. They are just as imortant as your pots and pans or your stove. Oh how I would love these knives, I really would give them a good home!

  104. I LOVE my santuko knife. A good knife is definitely crucial in every kitchen.

  105. I love to chop all my veggies for huge salads and find it very zen to take the time to prepare each component. Bell Peppers, Carrots, Radishes, tomatoes, cabbage, avocado, apples. It slows me down from the days events and let’s me take a moment to take in the beauty of the food before nourishing my body.

    Thanks for the great giveaway!

  106. i use some cheap knives i found at the grocery store. they are really not up to par, so this giveaway is great!

  107. OMG those are beautiful!
I drool over the knifes in the Sur La Table catelogue every month. I have cheap knives and they get put to work chopping veggies and fruit EVERY week, especially when I make a big salad like last night!

  108. Love my Henckels 8 in santoku. It’s all I use and I use it every day, twice. once to make my lunch and and again for dinner. On long kitchen prep days, it doesn’t get put away.

  109. I use my big gun knife for everything from chopping melons and strawberries to chicken for homemade baked nuggets. My hubs has way better knife skills than me, though! :(

  110. I lived in Switzerland for two years so I currently have an awesome set that I brought back from there!

  111. I currently only own walmart knifes. They aren’t anything special. I use them for potatoes, and they aren’t that good for it.

    peace and light

  115. I don’t think a day goes by without me chopping some sort of fruit or vegetable. I splurged on one good Cutco knife that I seem to use all the time so it would be great to have a few more high quality knives around!

  116. Most of the time I cook from scratch, so there is a lot of dicing, chopping, mincing in my kitchen, and a good knife would be a pleasure to do all those jobs! :)

  117. Currently I don’t have a favorite knife I use target brand knives that I received as a wedding gift, I dream of having knives that I don’t need to carve into things lol.

  118. Oh.My.Gosh. I saw this post and said “KINVES!” out loud.
The only knife set I have is a cheap little block set from Target, but I dream of having a really nice knife someday. I love to use fresh herbs and chopping is not an easy task with dulling Target knives :)

  119. I am constantly cutting apples and other fruits. I also use a bread knife lately not just for bread but for cutting angel food cake.

  120. Haha I can’t tell you how many random experiments like weird soups have come from “well, the knife’s already out…” The knife I rely on most is an 8 inch chef’s knife I bought when I first went back to school and needed something for the food science lab.

I used to get so nervous carrying it in my book bag! I was convinced my bag was going to get searched going on the subway! Luckily, that didn’t happen : )

  121. i have a kitchenaid knife! i dont love it but it does the trick.

i use it to chop veggies and make yummy veggie soups and stir fries!

  122. An old chef’s knife from Chicago Cutlery. I use it daily for many many tasks including chopping, cutting big items like pizza, etc.

  123. My favorite knife is a Zwilling J.A. Henckels Chef’s knife. I use it everyday with numerous foods and it never fails me.

  125. My fav is chef’s knife that is really my go-to multi-purpose knife. The brand has worn away and the handle recently broke :( I think I picked it ip at Marshalls. I keep buying more in search of one that compares and have yet to come across a contender- so I keep useing it- cracks and all! The true test is this house is how well it cuts through a large sweet potato (we slice them up and bake- seasoned with pepper & sea salt on a cookie sheet drizzled with olive oil several times a week).

    Would LOVE to win these!

  126. Every day I use this cute, little, super sharp, red handled, paring knife to cut up a green apple to throw into my oatmeal. Yum!

  129. I currently use a “mini butcher knife” for everything! I don’t know the name brand and I can’t even find it on the knife. But, I’ve had it forever and it fits in my little hand!

  130. Ummmmm, I currently loathe each and everyone of my dull knives and have been on the lookout for some new ones! These look perfect!

  131. I use my basic cheapo chefs knife daily, and some things are tough to get through. I’m looking at you, spaghetti squash! These knives look like they would halve a squash in mere seconds!

  132. Love big knifes, I use it for everything: chopping especially. it is much easier to use.

  133. Veggies! And lots of them! Nearly all of my chopping goes to them, and I’m proud of it :-)
