It’s springtime, strawberry season is upon us, and the weather is sunny and gorgeous in San Diego.

Strawberries and Cream Smoothie

I had a great run this morning outside and came in and took a look at the frozen strawberries in the freezer and knew I had to use them.

Blue sky and palm trees

I wanted something blended and sweet and creamy to quench my thirst.

This did the trick.

Strawberries and Cream Smoothie

Strawberry seeds in my teeth and all.

Strawberries and Cream Smoothie

It’s not a revolutionary “recipe”, but it sure is good.

It only takes a minute to make, and even less to drink. A blessing and a curse.

Strawberries and Cream Smoothie

The only thing that would have made this better would have been adding a shot of rum or Malibu.

But it was 10am so I refrained.

Strawberries and Cream Smoothie

I made a double batch, poured it into a bowl, put it in the freezer and later on tonight when I am watching Million Dollar Listing or a DVR’ed episode of The Real Housewives or Bethenny (yes, I love Bravo), I can shovel it into my mouth with a spoon as a strawberries ‘n cream “ice cream”

Hopefully I eat it slower with a spoon than I drank it with my straw because this was gone in a flash.

Strawberries and Cream Smoothie

Strawberries and Cream Smoothie

This sweet and creamy smoothie is like a strawberry milkshake, but healthier. If you use fresh berries rather than frozen, the smoothie will not be very cold unless you add ice, which will water it down. Use frozen berries if possible, or toss fresh berries into the freezer for even an hour before making this for better results. Optionally, Make make as an “ice cream” or frozen treat. Pour blended mixture into a bowl, freeze until almost solid, and serve. Or make popsicles – use paper dixie cups or ice cube trays and toothpicks or wooden grill skewers as the stick if you don’t have popsicle molds. Add rum (and a squirt of lime juice if you have it) for strawberry daiquiris, or Malibu, Citron, Gran Marnier. Add protein powder, drizzle with chocolate sauce, add other fruit (bananas, oranges, mango, pineapple, peaches, etc.) to the mixture before blending.

Prep Time 1 minute
Total Time 1 minute

Ingredients

  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups frozen strawberries (big handful), fresh may be used although ice may be necessary
  • 1/4 cup milk or cream (use your favorite milk or vegan milk, i.e. coconut milk cream, soy cream, etc.)
  • sweetenter, to taste (sugar, stevia, agave, etc.)

Instructions

Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Depending on how many strawberries you used, their size, your blender, and your desired smoothie thickness and consistency, you may need more than 1/4 cup cream (I used about 1/2 cup), or add a splash of water, to reach desired consistency.

Serve immediately. Leftover portion may be stored in the freezer for later consumption for up to 2 months. The smoothie does not change consistency and taste is not effected upon thawing.

Do you like strawberries? Do you have a favorite strawberry recipe or way to use them?

I wait all year for strawberry season, and then, all at once, there are so many.

There are usually sales on berries when they are in season, and it’s always tempting to cash in on the savings. Til I realize I just bought 3 pounds of berries and wonder what am I going to make with all these berries.

Thanks for the Baking Supplies Giveaway entries. Two winners announced Thursday.

  1. I generally skip any extra sweetener and blend a banana or something sweet into the smoothie. I really like enjoying the pure taste of fruits and it makes it healthier too.

  2. You totally reminded me of my favourite childhood snack. We used to drink something like this every summer using fresh strawberries from our garden. I loved it so much, but haven’t done it in years.

  3. I know this is an old one but I just made it and it’s amazing! I used mainly vanilla almond milk as my liquid but I’m not vegan so I added a few splashes of my fat free half and half I keep on hand for my coffee. Delicious! I’m trying your banana pineapple coconut smoothie tomorrow, can’t wait..Thank you for the recipes:)

  4. Strawberries are one of the top four fruits that show highest level of chemical contamination (peaches, too) Please use organically grown fruit when possible. It is disconcerting, now that my daughter is grown, to know that while I thought I was giving her the best nutrition possible I was actually poisoning her.

  5. Okay, so I know I’ve been commenting a lot on your website and I’m sorry, but I’m looking for new recipes that are flavorful and can be made with things from my (well stocked) pantry. Will you help me please? Thanx (again) :)

  6. This looks Fabulous!!! I just bought a ton of frozen fruit so I will have to try it. Plus I loved the idea of freezing it for dessert.

  7. Beautiful filtered lighting on the strawberry and cream smoothie!
I love smoothies.. always!! Last year I started using kefir.. it’s so yummy too and makes a great probiotic and high protein drink!

  8. Your photography s amazing! This recipe is simply, easy, and I’m sure, delicious.

  9. For the Strawberry smoothie, try adding some Frangelico. Man and Erma’s used to have something similar and it was wonderful! Also, try with Raspberries instead of strawberries.

  10. That smoothie is gorgeous. <3
My favourite strawberry (or any berry, really) recipe is this: wash. eat. ;)
But I have to admit, they're also amazing with cashew cream (had this for my birthday, actually) or frozen + blended with a little coconut milk. Yum.

  11. These look amazing, and all the recipes you posted following look awesome too. Gotta get me something to eat – my belly’s growling after looking at all these great pictures of food! :)

  12. HI Averie. I made this smoothie today for my kids and they LOVED it. So yummy! Sometimes the simplest things are the best.

Where did you get that glass straw? I so need one of those to go in my Lifefactory bottle.

    1. Did you read the recipe where I wrote
“1/4 cup + cream (half and half, milk, coconut milk cream, soy cream, etc.)”

And I gave links to the various vegan products. I used vegan cream in mine and it was lovely. So yes, it is vegan. But many people don’t care about vegan cream and they have cow’s milk cream but I gave options for a WIDE variety of preferences.

  13. I’m excited to try your Strawberries and Cream Smoothie recipe later today.

I’m off to whole foods right now!

    Thanks for the recipe,

    Grandma Kat
    XOXOXOXOXO

  14. I’m not as big of a fan of strawberries in their whole form, but I love strawberry smoothies and strawberry “fro-yo” and what not. Or even chocolate-covered strawberries! Although since it’s currently snowing I can’t really get into the Spring spirit. I’m so jealous of your warm weather!

  15. Simplicity is always best. That strawberry smoothie looks like it would really hit the spot right now! What a fun addition to a morning.

  16. Gorgeous! I have a lot of frozen strawberries at home just waiting for something like this!!

  17. I love million dollar listing. So fun to watch and dream! Although I’m not sure I’d be happy in a house like that, I kinda like small and cute…

    1. some of those houses ARE small in NYC…the square footage on some of them is pretty modest…the price tags..are not!

  18. Ooooh, I’m SO ready for morning runs followed by smoothies. Gotta get this bowling ball off my belly first!!! :-)

  19. The weather is GORGEOUS here, so these smoothies look even more amazing knowing that summer is right around the corner! :) Love how simple they are.

  20. It definitely was a good “smoothie day” today.
I had some with strawberries, banana and spinach!
    Yours look very yummy! :)

  21. Yum, this smoothie looks wonderful! Strawberries are amazing and I can’t wait for strawberry season to be in full swing here! Gorgeous pics and colors, BTW. :-)

  22. Ooooh, do I ever like strawberries! Had some today actually :-) I also love the new pink on your blog. Very pretty!

    1. thanks & I think this recipe sort of made it POP even though it’s been up for about 10 days now but this is my 1st pink recipe since then!

  23. Gooooorgeous photo! It’s so darn pretty that I just clicked through from Pinterest to see whose blog this was from! I like the new look of your site by the way!

    1. Thanks, Maggie! Yes, I am now averiecooks and although my old links still direct to LV&Yoga, I am more cooking that yoga’ing these days :) Thanks for clicking over & the compliments!

  24. I think it was National California Strawberry day yesterday or today or someday in the recent past. You really do have a sixth sense, I swear!

I used to buy strawberries year round because I love them so much, but I don’t even bother with them in the winter anymore. Just totally not at all worth it.

  25. Yum! I love smoothies! I have been on a major smoothie kick!!! Your looks delish!!

  26. i was craving a smoothie all day! too bad i didn’t make one since I don’t have any fresh/frozen berries right now. i LOVE strawberries. especially strawberry banana flavored anything! mmm now i want a starberr banana smoothie haha! i think my favorite strawberry “recipe” is just plain ole chocolate covered strawberries. can’t go wrong!!

  27. Starbucks makes a frap with these flavors but yours looks far more delicious and nutritious! It’s snowing where I am right now but when I get home to the sun, this’ll be the first thing I make! Thanks for an awesome recipe to kick spring off!

    1. You are so right, they DO make one. I forogt about that one. I never buy it…the $$, the ingredients in it, I should have called this the wanna be starbucks strawberry Frapp.

  28. Sounds simple and looks wonderful :) Gosh, I didn’t think I’d ever say this in March in NY, but I could’ve used one of these toady!

  29. I’ve slowly been getting into smoothies lately. They were not my thing at all since I’d rather chew on things than drink something… buttt with this hot weather lately I’ve been craving fruit like none other. I picked up a ton of frozen fruit today and made a decent one for a snack but I’m not all that good at making them. Gotta keep trying different combos. Was it a pretty heavy smoothie to drink with all that cream in it?

    1. Heavy compared to coconut water? yes

Heavy compared to a triple fudge oreo brownie? not so much :)

  30. That strawberry smoothie looks amazingly awesome. Wow. I love smoothies, and I am making that one very soon.

  31. Oh, Averie, I am literally swooning. That looks SO GOOD! I want to make it with coconut milk! Another great one ~ thank you! :-)

  32. Absolutely beautiful. That color is just perfect. I love love strawberries – and the Real Housewives of OC is kind of addicting ;-)

  33. I’ve been on a smoothie kick so I’m keeping the freezer stocked with strawberries. Sometimes I add cocoa powder, coconut flakes or almond butter for a little something different but I always add a hefty dose of vanilla! I’d like to expand my smoothie horizons and try your peaches and coconut cream recipe too.

    1. There’s just so many ways to go. I loved it when I added cookie butter to the smoothie I also linked…and the peaches and cream, anything with fruit and cream, or fruit and nut butter, you just can’t go wrong!

  34. i know! in a couple more weeks those giant strawberries fresh from cali will soon be here at my whole foods. i cannot wait. they are the best, they come from Driscoll. best of the best.
i always say i’m going to do something different with them but i never do, i just eat them or make strawberry shortcakes.

    1. Crazy enough we have Driscolls in the reg groc store, i.e. Ralph’s, for like $2 for a big tub (2 pints I think?) and those are normally 2 for $4 bucks, which is basically enough berries to turn red and pick seeds out of your teeth for a good long while :)

  35. That smoothie looks fantastic, so simple! I will definitely be making it into popsicles now that we have warmer weather :) Lovely photos

  36. The husband had business down in SD today so I went with. You’re not kidding, the weather is so amazing!! Having a cocktail at the bar in the W. Not too shabby for a Wed afternoon. ;0)

    1. I know it’s sooo nice out! I need to step away from the screen and out of the house…now.

Enjoy your drinks at the W…that’s the life, girl!!!

  37. i LOVE strawberries, and i’m so excited they’re back in season again! i just had a bunch in a protein smoothie earlier today. i’ve never really baked with strawberries before, so i’ll have to try out one of your breads or muffins one of these days!

  38. Smoothies are ideal right now! I had one after my run this morning too. Giada has a strawberry cupcake recipe thats my fav…but I still have to try yours!

    1. Oh I want to try that recipe! Can’t wait to read about it on your site if you make it!

  39. Yum! I could have gone for this after my run this morning! What a great healthy smoothie and ice cream snack! I always have frozen berries in the freezer!

  40. Frozen strawberries are the bomb. I have eaten an entire 1 pound bag in one sitting before. Naturally, I love strawberry smoothies! And cream? Yes, please.

    1. Hey girlie, long time not talk! Great to hear from you and yes, I can eat so many all at once that I feel like I’m going to turn into a berry!
