They’re Back

When I was at Trader Joe’s the other day, I picked up one of my favorite things

mango chunksI can’t believe it’s been a few months since I’ve had these orange gems in my life.  I just kind of forgot to replenish my stash and buy some.  Bad move on my part.  Glad I’ve rectified that problem.

I could take down half the bag at a sitting if I didn’t care about possibly turning myself orange

mango chunks

I love the texture of frozen fruit and I think it actually gets sweeter upon thawing.  Could be my imagination though.

I prefer my grapes frozen

And I like bananas best when frozen

And mango is no exception: frozen please

frozen mango chunksThe chunks just kind of melt in my mouth as they unfreeze.  Mmm, good!

You can pair bananas + mangoes for

Vegan Mango Banana Vanilla Softserve

And apples are also back

Raw Vegan GF Apple Crumble is really good

And it’s easy and no-bake and I prefer it to baked crumbles and crisps

But mango anything will always steal the show for me:

Jar of Mango Butter

Four Jars of Mango Ginger Chutney

Make Mango Ginger Maple Tofu with the chutney (or use apricot preserves or peach jam or similar if you don’t have mango chutney)

Stacked Mango Ginger Maple Tofu

And make No Bake White Chocolate & Mango Cookie Dough Bites with dried mango

Told you I love mango and I’m glad it’s back!

Most everything in the post could be made with apricots, nectarines, peaches or plums.

“caramel cheesecake **drool drool**”

Victoria @ The Pursuit of Hippieness August 26, 2011 at 10:33 am

“Sooo excited to try the caramel cheesecake!”

Enjoy your sweet treats ladies!

From my last post, Disses & Kisses, thanks for the support about my recipes being swiped and re-posted on other blogs.

What’s happening is somehow the spam content farms are getting a hold of my content and then just farming it out and posting it on their own sites but as Evan pointed out, it’s likely not even a human doing it.  Grrr.  Spam and spammers are the worst!

Good thing there were some Kisses of the Week, too.

1. Any foods you’ve forgotten about lately and are glad to have back in your life or need to reincorporate back into your life, asap?

I’ll be honest, I do love Vegenaise but recently I was out, didn’t want to make a special trip to Whole Foods just for it, and picked up a jar of Miracle Whip at the grocery store.  And yes, I loved it growing up, and love it still.

And also, Golden Grahams.  Childhood staple for me that I haven’t had in about a decade!

Pile of Golden GrahamsYes, there is a recipe coming using them

2. Do you like mangoes?

Clearly, I do.  Big time.

Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Mangos are the best fruit ever hands down. Little warning (I know some people have mentioned allergy stuff), but I only recently found out that sometimes the sap from the tree gets on the mango skins and it contains urushiol, which is the same stuff in poison oak, ivy, and sumac. I found this out the hard way. Imagine poison oak, but on your face. HORRIBLE!
This experience has not stopped me from eating them however. Basically you just have to wash the mangos (if eating them fresh) with soap and water, rinse thoroughly, peel and cut with two different knives, enjoy and then wash your face and hands carefully. At least, that is what I have to do when I want them (which is basically all summer, and sometimes beyond).
I really want to try your white chocolate mango thing. Looks delicious!!

    1. thanks for the comment/concern…always a good tip to remind others about, yes.

try those mango/white choc bites. They are soooo good!

  2. Agreed on grapes and bananas being frozen, I loaded up on both at Costco yesterday to freeze. Gotta grab a frozen mango bag at TJ’s next time I’m there!

    1. Popcorn recently and winter squash since I’ve got a garden full of them.
    2. Yes!

  3. I love Tj’s dried mangoes with sunflower butter spread over it for a snack. I actually just bough fresh mangoes from TJ’s. It’s a bit more expensive but I’m going to make on of Mama Pea’s salads with it, so I wanted to try it out. I also love frozen fruit as well, it does feel like it is melting in your mouth :P

  4. mmm to frozen mango! And totally agree with you on frozen grapes. I forgot how awesome smoothies were prior to the start of summer!

  5. Those mangoes are my fave TJ’s buy! I do them in the food processor like I do bananas for soft serve, but JUST the mangoes (no banana) and it’s so fantastic. Sometimes I toss in some frozen blueberries too. That’s a regular breakfast for me lately…soooo yummm.

  6. Thanks for pointing out the Blogger 101 posts! I’m a new blogger and find these extremely helpful. Right now, I’m erring on the side of being OVERLY cautious about copying.

Thanks again – love your blog!

  7. I <3 mangoes so, so much … I just used it today in Amanda@Running With Spoon's mango vanilla tofu protein smoothie and it was delicious! It seems to be difficult to find good quality mangoes where I live and it's a bit hit and miss, but I like to see that as making the good ones taste even sweeter! :D

I'm so sorry about your content being stolen; I've followed nail art blogs for a few years, and they suffer from it very badly … I don't know if it's worse if it's a spam thing or a person stealing your stuff, grrr :(

  8. i am not a mango fan at all (except if there was a nail polish shade that colour) but happy for YOU that you have them back in your casa!
i am all out of puffins (love that you mention golden grahams today and can’t wait to see what recipe you make with them!) and it’s on my to do list today to get more. no puffins is no fun!
have a great sunday aft, averie!

  9. You admitted to loving MW ?!?! ;P I knew I wasn’t the only one who liked it.

WOO HOO! I never win giveaways and I won some Izze from Janetha AND these sweet treats from you :D The giveaway gods are smiling on me methinks. :)

  10. I love frozen fruit! I pop it straight outta the freezer and directly into my mouth. Mango is good, but it’s not at the top of my favorite fruit list. I think all those years working at Starbucks around the banana mango Vivanno ruined it a bit for me. :(

Can’t wait for the Golden Graham recipe!

  11. Yes, frozen mango is the best! The texture is so smooth and buttery (okay, that sounds weird)–plus, you don’t have to peel anything ;)
I recently, in a way, rediscovered whole grains and lentils. I hadn’t forgotten them per se, but I was always too lazy to spend 40 minutes cooking them. Then I realized my Vita-Mix could turn them into a flour (and grind them with spices at the same time), with which I could easily make whole grain porridges or smooth lentil curries, in under 30 minutes start-to-finish :D

  12. oh man I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Mangoes!!!! we eat them unripe (still green) back in the philippines! so good! with a little bit of salt! yumm!! makes my mouth water everytime i think of it!

  13. I love eating frozen mango, but I love frozen cherries the best. The texture is so good and they are soooo sweet!

I can’t wait to see the Golden Grahams recipe. I love that cereal!

  14. I have only had a fresh mango once and I wasn’t that impressed. I used to LOVE orange mango juice when I was a kid and I was really hoping that mango would be another awesome tasting fruit, but it was very “meh” to me.

I have been in a kind of food rut for awhile, but one thing that I recently added back was adding avocado to my smoothies. I had forgotten just how awesome and creamy it makes them. Almost as thick as pudding! Yum.

      1. I think I’ll have to with the way you described eating it frozen. Sounds so good! Maybe that’s what I’ll have to do is buy it frozen. So many things are better when they are super cold :)

  15. you are such a tease. can´t wait to see the final recipe!!
I loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove mangoes! One of my favorite fruits.
I reincooperated peppermint oil into my diet. It´s so good in oatmeal, smoothies, pancakes…

  16. Loooove mangoes. I order the baked dried ones from iHerb all the time!
And so excited about my sweet treats! Thanks Averie :)

    1. baked dried ones from iherb? I dont even know about those. I just get the dried unsulphured ones from TJ’s next to the raisins section.

  17. I love mangoes! My job this past summer required me to chop/dice around 20-30 mangoes a day (froyo cafe), and I used to keep the last little bits off the pit for later snacking :-) Now I really want something mango! Being stuck inside for 48 hours does not lend itself well to food cravings.

  18. Mmmm I recently discovered mangoes, and my favorite banana soft serve right now is mango!!! I’m excited for pumpkin season though!

  19. I like the flavor of mangoes (like that mango butter) but not the texture of the fruit itself. Jason, however, loves mangoes.

  20. Mango banana soft-serve is my current obsession. Try it with pureed raspberries (I just thaw frozen rasps and mash them with a fork) as a sundae sauce…amazing. And the colours are gorgeous!

  21. Something I was craving were peaches and nectarines, so I picked up a basket of nectarines from the Farmer’s Market yesterday, and was so glad I did!

I do love mangoes too and actually haven’t had them in a while…hmmm, I guess we know what I should be getting next!!!! Love apples too…I wish they had Trader Joe’s in!

  22. you know when certain bloggers remind you of different products, or the other way around haha like certain products remind you of different bloggers, well i feel that way about you and tjs frozen mango chunks, and the mango chutney TOTALLY remind me of you haha like i think of you every time i’m at tjs well that and the sumatra blend that you drink too! <3 you lady!

    1. every time i see peanut flour anything, i think of you, instantly :)

and also coffee, too!! all the TJs seasonal flavors, think of you RIGHT away!

  23. Aw, I’m sorry about the spam, Averie. It must be frustrating seeing the content that you work hard to create on other random robot sites :/ At least you were made aware of it!

I just made a Mexican mango avocado salsa last night and it was probably the first time I cooked with mangoes in, lets be real, EVER. Needless to say, its definitely a fruit that I need to make more of an effort to incorporate into my meals

  24. I love everything mango flavored as well!! I am currently obsesseddd with Paul Newman Mango Salsa!

  25. pitting cherries is one of the most dreaded tasks ever! that sucks they arent carrying them anymore. lmk when/if you see them back.

  26. One food I haven’t forgotten but TJs stopped carrying several months back; frozen pitted cherries. I think there’s a shortage in the supply, because I haven’t been able to find them anywhere.

      1. Really?! I shop at Costco; must look for them! Last time I looked all they had were strawberries and a berry blend.

  27. SADDest of all sad things, I LOVE mango and used to buy those TJ’s frozen mango chunks ALLLL the time, but I developed an oral allergy to the fruit (lips get all puffy), so I can’t eat it anymore. CRUEL! it is truly quite the tragedy. My heart (and taste buds) ache just reading this post. I want my mango back! lol
There are so many other fruits I love just as dearly, but you know how when you can’t have something you want it even more? Yea. On a more positive note, new food (fruit) find at Whole Foods this week was honeydew nectarines. To die for. omg.

    1. oral allergy syndrome, OAS
very serious. and people who are allergic to the latex family, i.e. bananas, kiwi, mangoes, melons…usually get it BAD.

OAS is VERY commonly found with the latex family vs. say, the brassica family… So Im not surprised by this.

YEARS of hanging out in food allergy forums taught me so much :)

      1. yep, I’m a nurse practitioner so I’m well aware of OAS & cross-sensitivities. Funny though because I eat kiwis like it’s my job, and have no problem w/ bananas, melons, or latex. It’s JUST mango. I mean I suppose I could develop other allergies later in life, but the mango thing has been going on for a while now without any other allergies. Weird, but I’ll take it. I REFUSE to stop eating any more of my fave fruits. Taking one away is enough! lol

      2. Oh I had no idea about your background…very good you do know about it all! Most people are always surprised to learn of the cross-sensitivities.

I’ll be emailing you now with all my medical stuff b/c now i know youre an NP. (kidding!)

  28. I like some fruits frozen – I like blueberries frozen best. Grapes are too big and leave me with a too cold mouth!

And since you got apples, I have to comment that honeycrisps are almost back in season!!!

  29. Frozen fruit is the BEST in the summer! I love having granola, almond milk, and frozen grapes as a snack. :)

I used to LOVE miracle whip when I was growing up. My favorite sandwich ever was just one piece of bread with miracle whip, folded in half haha. It’s been forever since I’ve had it though!

You know I love mangoes. ;)

  30. Coffee! I tried to give it up, thinking it would be better for my health…screw that! I added it back in and now I’m in love again….I bought a keurig, and now I have a full blown addiction.

    Mangos are awesome. Period.

  31. I LOVE mangos too- Dried, fresh or frozen. The frozen ones are almost like eating mini Popsicles but better.
I’m excited about having fresh figs back in my life now that they are in season.

  32. I have never has mangos but I do love my fruit frozen like you do. Grapes and bananas frozen are a must! I like to put frozen grapes in water like ice cubes :)

  33. thats so weird about the spam. Can you report it somehow? weird! By the way, we share the same obsession with mango. Ahh, so good!

    1. I’d have to contact their ISP and deal with tons of stuff i just dont have time for!
