Valentines

Since Skylar started her new school, I feel like I’ve started school, too.  Nearly every week there’s something that needs to be made, brought in for show and tell, supplies to gather and bring in for various craft projects the teachers are going to do with the kids, and this week it’s Valentine’s Day, which is code for: a Project That Mom Needs to Handle.  I’ve become good friends with tape, crayons, glue, and scissors lately.

Kids valentines cards and candy packets

I prepared a couple dozen Valentines for Skylar’s nearest and dearest, complete with candyless Valentine’s treats affixed.  I spotted these in the grocery store next to the pink-wrapped Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and although I would have preferred handing out peanut butter cups (and as a kid I would have preferred receiving them), but for Skylar’s classmates I chose something fruit-based rather than chocolate-based.

I can’t wait to see what Valentines she brings home and how she likes the Valentine’s exchange with her classmates.

Later in the week it’s Count-To-100 Day and I have to send one hundred of something.  I’m sending 100 pennies.

I’d like to send Ritz-Stuffed Peanut Butter Cups but once again, I’m sure others will appreciate pennies more than peanut butter cups.

Did you exchange Valentines with your classmates?

Do you remember wanting to receive Valentine’s from certain people?

I remember wanting to receive Valentines from a certain zit-faced fourteen year old junior varsity football quarterback with a crackling voice and overly gelled hair who I thought was so cute.  Valentines from certain popular girls at the lunch table who didn’t typically talk to me unless they wanted to copy my homework come to mind would have ironically been cherished, too.

I hope that Skylar gets Valentines from everyone her little heart desires and at this stage in the game (kindergarten-aged), everyone gets a Valentine from everyone, which I think is so sweet especially when they’re little.

  1. I remember Valentine’s Day parties in grade school. I helped my mom make giant heart shaped frosted sugar cookies. Glad you included those ritz stuffed PB cups in this post–my husband loves buckeye candy and so I think he’ll love these!

  2. I totally miss valentines day as a kid! It was so fun, we would make little cute bags to put on our desk and everyone would go around and put their valentines in the bags. It was also great that it was required if you decided to bring valentines to school, you had to bring one for everyone in the class so no one was left out. Totally miss those days :)

  3. Oh, I definitely remember wanting to receive valentines from certain people!!! I passed out valentines, and still do – to my students!! I made them cookies, wrote on valentine cards, and bought some goodies to fill little bags for them.

  4. valentine’s day was the best.day.ever in elementary school! i remember coming home with my bag of cards and candy… i felt so very special (even though it was class rules you had to bring a valentine for everyone!) i am very much looking forward to making valentines with my kids some day :)

  5. I used to love writing out and receiving all the generic valentines, and we all had a blast decorating our own “mailboxes” out of a shoe box to tape to our desks. In high school, basically only kids who are dating give valentines, and the rest of us don’t care ;)

  6. I used to love the Valentine’s Day school-size cards but I hated giving them and receiving them was even worse. Never knew when a snotty-nosed brat boy was going to be, well, a brat, lol. My mom always gave me stuffed animals and my grandma would send a package in the mail, so I liked V-Day with family, but with strangers, meh. :)

  7. aw yes we used to do a secret rose delivery service in middle school and it was always the biggest deal who ended up getting roses, and trying to figure out who they were from. Fun memories!

  8. haha oh the joys of having a kindergarten aged child – I couldn’t be a kindergarten teacher, that’s for sure!

  9. I loved decorating my box that friends would put the cards in (and sometimes candy). One year I made mine into a mail box. I was so proud!

  10. I love making the little valenti s day cards. Last year I went and helped with the v-day party but this year, sadly, she is spending the school year with her dad in another state. I’ll have to send her your peanut butter cups in the express mail! :-)

  11. giving and receiving little valentine’s with classmates was one of the biggest things i looked forward to all school year! i remember we’d make little “mailboxes” to distribute our valentines in. so much fun!

  12. Looking at those pictures brings back so many school memories of exchanging Valentine cards at school!

  13. I loved making valentine’s day cards! I still do. I would definitely make homemade cards over bought ones if I have time to make them. I think I’ll have to make some almond-butter cups soon! Since I’ve been trying to work out my food allergies, it seems like a safe dessert to eat for Valentine’s Day!
