Weekend Plans & Brown

Happy Weekend! I am always glad when the weekend is here.

Time to get some fresh air and enjoy the fall weather

Tree in green park

Ok, I really don’t love fall because it means that winter is coming but I’ll pretend the seasonal changes just stop with fall.  And that winter won’t ever show up.

And yes, it does get chilly here in the winter.  We don’t walk around with swimsuits on while rollerskating along the beach, Three’s Company style, which I think is everyone’s mental image and impression of SoCal.

I plan to go for a few nice runs

San diego street with palm trees

Do some at-home yoga

black yoga mat on hardwood floorI have little desire to go to in-studio yoga classes the past few years because at home yoga is on my own timetable, and I can do my own flow and what I want to work on.  And oh yes, it’s free.

I’d like to make some new soup versions because they’re easy, make planned leftovers, and I use the dump-it-all-in recipe “technique”.    Whatever I have on hand, more than likely, will work.

Maybe something along the lines of

Savory Pumpkin, Potato, & Carrot Soup

or

Crockpot Vegan Chili (can make in a crockpot or stovetop and I actually think the stovetop is easier/faster/quicker cleanup but the crockpot works if you’re a set it and forget it fan)

I need to make another batch if for nothing else to take new pictures

Brown food (or any softer, not much texture, or ‘comfort food’) is just not that pretty.  Well, at the very least it’s harder to photograph it in a pretty way.

I wrote a post on Not So Pretty Food with food styling tips and some book reviews

I tried my best with the Spicy Baked Blacked Beans with Vegetables from earlier this week

But I’d still rather just have dessert

Oatmeal Raisin Carrot Cake BitesBrown desserts trump brown beans any day for me.  I contributed this recipe to Marcus Samuelsson’s site.  He won Top Chef a couple seasons ago but I didn’t even know that at the time.

Questions:

1. What are your weekend plans?

I’ve got work, workouts, family time, cooking time, catch up on housework time, and maybe a little time with my DVR for some mindless tv!  Real Housewives or Top Chef Just Desserts anyone?

2. What’s your favorite Brown Food?  Do you think certain foods are harder to photograph than others?

My fave brown foods would be Fudgy Nutella Brownies

Or

Just chocolate desserts, in general

Such as…

No Bake Toffee & Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites

Toffee & Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites

And I think desserts, in general, are just easier to photograph.

Thanks for the Case of Odwalla Bars Giveaway entries, too

  1. Happy weekend to you too Averie! Now you got me thinking about making some chili next week since the weather is starting to get cooler.

D and I are going to LA Live in DTLA today and we are taking a different approach by getting on the Metrolink train instead of driving and getting stuck on the 5fwy plus paying for parking once we get there. We got a weekend pass for $10 good from Fri night until Sunday and with free transfers to the Metro trains and buses in LA. =)

  2. I just pulled your Magic 8 layer bars out of the oven – they smell amazing. I can’t wait to take them to a party this afternoon. :)

  3. Brown foods definitely seem like they would be hard to photograph, unless they’re chocolate ;)

I think one of the hardest things I tried to take a picture of was pasta with alfredo sauce. It had a bit of a color contrast since it had black pepper in it, but I didn’t have any fresh parsley or anything else to put on top. I think that would have helped. Of course, I was just playing around, so I wasn’t that concerned. But foods that are uniform in color definitely seem difficult!

  4. We have actually been having heat here this weekend too….but its muggy!! I love SoCal!!

I’m working on building the new site up, going shopping and have a PARTY tonight!! WOOO HOOOO!!!!

    Have a nice weekend!!

    xxoo

  5. I have mixed emotions about fall, love the cooling temps, apples, pumpkins, and turning leaves. But not sure I’m ready for the months of rain and freezing temps that will follow. I need to try more at home yoga, one of my goals once my running schedule slows down.

    1. Shopping with sisters, running, chores, gardening, and hopefully time to work on my site.
    2. Any raw chocolate dessert I think. :-) Yes, expecially shinier foods that can freak out marco lenses.

  6. I feel the same way about yoga – I know it’s important to the yoga community and sphere that classes get students in them and the like but my free-one-student-only-“studio” in my living room cannot be beat.

  7. I’ll be adding a few fall touches to our home. Then working in my studio. I’m so happy I found your blog. I’ll add you to my blog roll. Be Well, and hugs, Katherine

  8. I love how clean and gleaming your floors are!!! And this title cracked me up, for some reason. :-) Have a great weekend, Averie!

  9. Super busy today.
    1. Boot-camp
    2. Sonoma County Book Fair, which I must leave early so I can…
    3. Work at the Kaiser Health Fair. The Y will have an obstacle course set up for kids.

  10. Favorite brown food? I have to go with chocolate. brownies, choc chip cookies, something along those lines.

Right now it is 33 degrees so yes it got cold quickly here — but it is supposed to be 80 degrees by the end of next week — MN cannot make up its mind as to what season it is.

  11. LOL – 3’s Company Style. I loved that show! Planning to spend most of the morning cleaning then spending rest of afternoon with friends. Right now it’s a chilly 56 degrees but thankfully warming to 80. Have a great Saturday!

  12. I loe that plate with ribbon going through the edges! How cool :) You are making me crave chili…like BADLY! My mom always made chili for us ALL the time but my boyfriend hates beans:( I’m making my own batch next week for sure!

  13. Am I seeing some savory recipes in a post? What a change! ;) Averie, all your food – dessert or not- looks so great! I admire how often you eat with natural and whole ingredients.. and your talent to photograph them so Well! Your pictures are wonderful.

  14. My weekend plans are a lot of schoolwork and hopefully getting a little time to unwind and relax from the week. I’m totally with you on the at-home yoga… although I get free classes at the studio I teach at, I’m always doing podcasts at home on my own time!

  15. desserts are prettiest to look at, too, imo! and you’ve got some drool-worthy photos in your collection, averie!
fave brown foods: choco chips, pb, and most cereals (stretching the definition of brown, here, to include beige/cream!).
this weekend: work, work, work, grocery shopping and jersey shore viewing! all good!
“…at home yoga is on my own timetable, and I can do my own flow and what I want to work on. And oh yes, it’s free.” -> perfect with what i was thinking about the last few days. thanks for listing the positives of non-studio yoga!
