Drinking a whole chocolate cake batter milkshake sure beats the one or two measly licks of the batter that’s on the beaters after making a chocolate cake.

Then again I’ve never met a batch of cake batter, brownie batter, or cookie dough that I didn’t love to snag a few tastes of.

Plus, it’s summer and it’s hot.

And I’d rather drink my cake than turn on the oven and bake one.

But it really doesn’t have to be summer to drink cake batter.

Cake batter is a food, or drink, for all seasons.

There’s a generous scoop of ice cream and a cup of whole milk in the milkshake making it plenty creamy and very rich.

Gather your all-star lineup of ingredients.

You could likely use cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and flour in proper ratios totaling one-half cup to approximate cake mix (see recipe notes) instead of using actual cake mix. However, I like cake mix and I like shortcuts.

glass of milk, devil's food cake mix, chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, and chocolate sprinkles

Select whatever cake mix you have open – chocolate, vanilla, white, yellow, or strawberry cake mix – you do have at least six different boxes of cake mix open at any given time, right? You can also use brownie mix for a brownie batter milkshake.

Add one half cup of mix, a hearty scoop of ice cream, milk, chocolate sauce, vanilla, and give ‘er a whirl. Adding the milk first so the cake mix floats on top of the milk rather than sitting on the blender blade makes for better blending.

Rim the glass in whipped topping or ice cream and then dip the glass in cake batter in order to get a little extra cake batter to stick to the rim.

Garnish with sprinkles and anything else that floats your cake batter milkshake boat.

Don’t spill sprinkles all over in your utter excitement over this milkshake.

I really had to from going crazy with more ice cream on top, whipped topping, drizzling chocolate and caramel sauce, or adding a dollop of homemade peanut butter on top.

I figured what I had in the glass was already plenty going on and it is swimsuit season after all.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup vanilla ice cream, or chocolate
  • ½ cup devil’s food cake chocolate cake mix boxed, or another fave flavor or brownie mix
  • 3 tablespoons chocolate syrup, divided
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • whipped topping for garnishing, optional
  • sprinkles for garnishing, optional

Instructions

  • Combine milk, ice cream (I have made this with vanilla cookie dough, vanilla, and chocolate ice cream – use what you have), cake mix, at least 2 tablespoons chocolate sauce, and vanilla in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Serve immediately.
  • Optionally, before serving, dip the rim of the glass in whipped topping or run ice cream-dipped fingers around the rim so it’s moistened and sticky. Dip the moistened rim into a shallow bowl with cake mix, graham cracker crumbs, or sprinkles. Garnish milkshake with whipped topping, sprinkles, a drizzle of Nutella, peanut butter, or chocolate syrup as desired.  Tip: Make your own cake mix by combining approximately 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, 3 tablespoons granulated sugar, and 1 tablespoon flour.

  1. I’ve been baking waaaay too much for how hot it is. This looks like a much better alternative … although not as easy to deliver to friends homes :-)

  2. This looks crazy good, Avery, so frothy and frosty. Your photos are so creative and VERY persuasive!

    1. creative and VERY persuasive! <-- thank you! That's my goal and although whipped cream and chocolate sauce dripping all over the place would have made this even more "wow factor" like I see on many sites with ice-cream or smoothie drinks, I was actually going to drink this and did - and didn't 'need' all that whipped cream and more sauce. Lol

    1. And okay, I did add a little bit as I was portioning this into glasses to split with the family. Skylar wanted choc sauce and I wanted PB and Scott wanted both :)

    1. I always pick the hottest stretch of weather to shoot cold/chilled stuff. It never fails! And then it wants to get all melty and condensation and well, you know the drill!

  3. This looks so delicious, Averie! I love the cake batter rim – totally puts this over the top for me!

    1. whipped cream and chocolate sauce dripping all over the place would have made this more over the top but since I was actually going to drink this and did – I didn’t ‘need’ any more over the top-ness :)

  4. looks fabulous- going to have to try it with your cake mix substitute! I will use almond milk, but that’s just me :)

  5. Wow. Just wow. This looks incredible! I love cake batter and cookie dough… sometimes more than the actual cake or cookie!

  6. Not really a milk drinker. When I did drink real milk I was the oddball that only liked skim. We didn’t get lots of shakes as a kid, but there was one place that made malted shakes and that was always a treat.

    1. Dairy Queen was the ultimate summer treat for us – Blizzards and milkshakes and fond memories!

  7. I agree about cream in my coffee these days, nothing compares and please don’t give me almond milk in there! Also I want that milk glass so bad… it’s SO cute!

    1. It’s really just gloried sugar and cocoa powder and flour, but in the perfect ratios – such a time saver that makes it taste delish :)

  8. Hot diggity dang that looks good! And thank you for giving a make-your-own cake mix recipe, I never have it on hand!
I am not a milk drinker(though I was raised drinking it I prefer it in things like shakes and cereal), but I love a good shake.

Either it is the summer heat or we are on the same blogger wavelength because my Saturday blogpost was a shake too! It is a take on the Brandy Alexander. Boozy and ice creamy:

If you want to try it;)

    1. The cake mix approximation I gave will be point you in the right direction for this recipe. Obviously you can’t make a cake with it but for this purposes, a little cocoa powder, sugar, and flour – good enough :)

Your shake with the Creme de cacao looks great!

  9. You must read my mind because I have a post on deck that is kinda sorta similar to this (different flavor!) :) YUM!!!

Ahh, the pictures in this whole post. Want it all. Now.

    1. It’s funny when I saw your last post and that choc avo shake..I was thinking the same thing about you b/c I knew I had this post going out!
