P.F. Chang’s Chicken Lettuce Wraps {Copycat Recipe}

I don’t go to P.F. Chang’s that often but when I do someone in my group or family will order their chicken lettuce wraps because they’re just so good.

Now you can skip the restaurant version and make your own in 20 minutes. And I promise you this homemade version tastes better. We inhaled these and then my daughter asked if I could make a double-batch the next day. So I did.

P.F. Chang's Chicken Lettuce Wraps {Copycat Recipe} - Skip the restaurant version and make at home in 20 minutes!! EASY, healthier because you're controlling the ingredients, and they TASTE WAY BETTER!!
They’re super easy and healthier because you’re controlling all the ingredients.

There are so many layers of flavor from the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, chili garlic sauce, rice wine vinegar, garlic, ginger, and green onions. The chili garlic sauce adds a perfect amount of heat that we enjoyed but if you’re sensitive to spices you can always reduce the amount.

In case you’re concerned, I found all the ingredients in the Asian section of my regular grocery store. They all play their own role to add authenticity to the recipe and I recommend using them all.

I’ve made the recipe using both ground chicken and ground turkey and both were excellent. You can also use ground beef in case you want another option. Or try my P.F. Chang’s Mongolian Beef (Copycat Recipe).

Did you make this recipe?

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 pound ground chicken (I’ve also used ground turkey with good results)
  • 1 medium/large sweet Vidalia or yellow onion, diced small
  • 1/3 cup hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Asian chili garlic sauce, or to taste (sriracha may be substituted)
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely minced or pressed
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger or 2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger, or to taste
  • one 8-ounce can water chestnut, drained and diced small
  • 2 to 3 green onions, sliced into thin rounds
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste
  • butter lettuce leaves, for serving

Directions:

  1. To a large skillet, add the oils, chicken, and cook over medium-high heat until chicken is cooked through; stir intermittently to crumbly while cooking.
  2. Add the onion, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, chili garlic sauce, stir to combine, and cook for about 5 minutes, or until onion is soft and translucent and most of the liquid has been absorbed; stir intermittently.
  3. Add the garlic, ginger, stir to combine, and cook for about 1 minute, or until fragrant.
  4. Add the water chestnuts, green onions, salt and pepper to taste, and cook for about 2 minutes, or until tender. Taste filling and make any necessary flavor adjustments, i.e. more soy sauce, hoisin, pepper, etc.
  5. Spoon about 1/4 cup of the mixture into the lettuce leaves to serve. Recipe is best warm and fresh but filling will keep airtight in the fridge for up to 5 days.

  1. I’ve made these several times with turkey and chicken and we love them. I do prefer the chicken, but use the turkey if I cannot find ground chicken breast because I am on Weight Watchers and the ground turkey and chicken breasts are 0 points, so it makes it about a 2 point, but delicious meal!

  2. Followed recipe exactly. It was a winner! Next time I will reduce Hoison sauce, as it was a little overpowering. Will definitely make it again.

    • Thanks for the five star review and glad you will definitely make it again! Some hoisin sauces are stronger than others and do vary from brand to brand. So yes just reduce yours a bit, to taste.

  3. Very tasty. I made a triple recipe with Turkey.

  4. This recipe was so easy! I even made the chicken mixture the night before and then reheated it to serve it to friends the next day. My friends loved it and asked for the recipe!

  6. This was very good!! My husband enjoyed it (he exclaimed I’m the best cook ever lol) and my 1.5 year old scarfed it down! I would do a little less hoisin next time just to accommodate her.

  7. (Speaking as a former Chang’s Employee) this recipe is Good except you forgot the mushrooms and rice sticks. Both are very important.

    • I agree but its hard to find the rice sticks :(

    • What kind of mushrooms?

      • Shiitake mushrooms. I used to work there as well! hehe Excited to try these! The rice sticks are little white hard sticks. Then you put them in a pot of oil and they blossom! It’s a really fun thing to do with kids! So don’t look for the already puffy rice sticks. Look for them uncooked!

  8. Made it with ground beef and it was delicious! Very easy to make!

  11. I’m curious if you have a gluten free substitution suggestion for the hoisin sauce. This recipe sounds so delicious!

  13. This recipe was delicious! My daughter just made this tonight following the recipe exactly. The only thing she did differently was to go lighter on the sriracha sauce. I highly recommend this recipe. Thanks Averie

  14. Wow! Even my picky 13 year old loved it! I couldn’t find butter lettuce, romaine was a great substitute, like an actual taco instead of a cup.

  20. LOVED IT but we used ground turkey,General Cho’s sauce instead of hoisin. Tried it both ways and like this better. Also used 2 T. Coconut aminos and 1T lite soy. Added 1 more tsp. Chili sauce…. PERFECTION!!

  22. ABSOLUTELY TO DIE FOR! I’ve made this three times within a month and typically I spread my recipes out over two or more months (love to cook). This is so darn good, we eat the filling straight out of the fridge…cold. Who needs lettuce!!

  23. I had two large left over chicken thighs (HEB FAJITA SEASONED) that I had grilled last night for dinner. I chopped these up finely, and modified the amount of seasoning by about 1/2. I made my own Hoisin sauce, and did not add any more soy sauce since the meat was already salty. I used Sirracha sauce, and also add a small amount of curry paste and water, which added a different depth of flavor. Anyway, it was really delicious, and a great way to use up my leftover chicken.Five stars!
