Here are this week’s Thursday Things:

1. Better Homes and Gardens interviewed me and featured me on their site

Better Homes and Gardens Food Logo

I was flattered and honored when they asked me. Never in a million years would I have guessed when I was a little girl watching my mom read her BHG magazines that they’d be asking me for an interview.

Life is full of surprises, isn’t it.

2. Although these new arrival Owl Dessert Plates are adorable, they signify autumn.

I don’t want autumn. I want summer to continue forever.

3. Smoked Coconut Cheesecake

“…perfumed with musky, flowery aromas and flavored with notes of caramel and smoke…”

I’m typically not a fan of smoked foods and up until seeing this would say absolutely no way to smoked desserts.

But I may need reconsider that position.

4. The only think I like smoked is smores. Or baked smores that you don’t require a campfire.

5. I recently picked up this Amika Shampoo and Conditioner

“Amika Obliphica Balancing Shampoo is a Sea Buckthorn Berry (Obliphica) Balancing Shampoo with omega 7 + vitamin c that gently restores and nourishes for fine, medium and course hair. Silicone free, paraben free. Safe for color treated hair. The Obliphica berry, for centuries renowned for its healing powers, has an arsenal of antioxidants, vitamins, healthy fatty acids, Omega 3, 6 & 9, and the rare Omega 7 (usually only found in fish oil). These potent vitamins combined with the powerful properties of the Argan nut oil, native to Morocco, come together to form a line that replenishes, moisturizes, and brings out hairs natural balance. The Balancing Shampoo gently cleanses while infusing hair with fatty acids, proteins, anti-oxidants, and other nutrients.”

After just a couple uses my hair is shiner, stronger, and feels like it has more life in it. I don’t know if it will be my forever-and-ever shampoo and conditioner because I do like to switch things up, but I can say for now I like it.

Caveats: it doesn’t suds-up much because it’s sulfate-free so if you like really big bubbles, it may not be for you.

It has a strong fragrance; the conditioner more so than the shampoo, but the scent fades after a day or two. I only wash my hair a couple times a week, and by day 3 or 4, I’d rather my hair smell like perfume than, well, dirty hair.

6.  Nourishing Hair Mask

I have not actually used the mask because it was a little pricey at the beauty supply store, but I plan to order it online. The employees were all raving about it. It smells heavenly, sort of tropical, and if for no other reason that the scent is divine, I plan to order it.

7. If you don’t like a strong scent of pina coladas wafting through your house, then don’t make Pina Colada White Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies

One way or the other, you’ll want to either drink or eat a pina colada.

8. Does the Paleo Diet Make Any Sense?

With Full Article Here

“According to the Paleo Diet, we humans would be better off eating like we did back in the caveman days. We should eat meat (lots of meat), vegetables, and fruit; work out intensely (think running after wooly mammoths); and avoid any food that requires agriculture and civilization to produce (e.g. bread, cheese, Twinkies)…

…The whole article is interesting, but basically says that we humans are equipped with a digestive tract that evolved to deal with a leafy diet, but has since adapted to eating starchier grains. Our guts can handle pretty much anything we can throw at them (allergies aside), and there certainly isn’t any reason to suppose that we’re better off eating mostly meat…(source)”

Interesting food for thought. Pun intended.

10. I like everything about this Z Gallerie room

The yellow print that looks like stone, the silver mirrored piece behind the couch, the tufted bench, in chocolate, the white rug, the low and modern sectional.

  1. I don’t care what cavemen ate, but I do know that I feel best when sticking to meat, eggs, veggies and fruits, and ditch the grains and dairy.

Cool about the interview! Does BH&G still have a print edition? Is the interview there, too?

    1. gotta do what works for you! yes they still have a print edition – at this time, I think my interview is just online.

  2. AVERIE!! Better Homes and Gardens???

    That’s, like, my dream.

If I wasn’t so happy for you I’d be totally jealous. :)

  3. congrats on Better Homes and Gardens! I’ve been reading that magazine since…I could read? It used to be my “cleaning porn”

  4. Congrats!! That is such an exciting opportunity!

Smoked desserts? This is a first for me. I am curious to try it though. I will try just about anything with coconut in it (except if it has animal products haha).

My beliefs on the Paleo diet are that we are NOT cavemen. Our bodies are intelligent machines that know what they are doing and adapt to many situations. I believe the only thing that corrupts them is animal products which have shown to be linked to all types of diseases and disorders.

  5. Autumn? Ah, no! We’ve barely had a Summer. I refuse.
Going to check out the interview now, SO exciting. I’m so happy for you :)

  6. I could just never do Paleo. I am just not going to eat meat, and I’m not even sure one can do it unless they are willing to eat meat.

  7. CONGRATS on the BHG interview; that is too cool!

PS – Random question for you: did you find a way to get FB to let you rename your fan page, or did you just delete and start a new one “from scratch”?

  8. what a great opportunity! You deserve it! and thanks for the article on Paleo. We all need to do what makes us feel best, yes?

  9. One thing I’ve got to say about Paleo is that I can’t see humanity being better off with an even HIGHER demand for meat. We can only chop down so many old-growth forests for animal agriculture, my friends. Before the agricultural revolution, we didn’t have over seven billion people all trying to live at once.

  10. Love your blog Averie!!
the owl plates are gorgeous. it just makes me want to carb-o-load and put a gigantic piece of cake on them hahaha.
have you heard of the site design-seeds.com? made me think of it when i saw the gorgeous yellow room! beautiful colors for a room :)
enjoy the rest of your week!

  11. Averie, I love your Thursday things! It’s like a little trip inside Averie’s thoughts! CONGRATS on the BHG feature. That is certainly quite an honor! I bet you were overloaded with excitement! Will that be in the printed magazine? Or online? I saw the link to it and I loved reading it about how happy it makes you to shower your hubs and Skylar with food. Food IS love, you are right. :) Those owl plates! My one friend loves cutesy owl things. She’d die for any or all of them!

That smoked coconut cheesecake sounds interesting. I obviously love my smores smoked too. The blacker the marshmallow, the better. Is that gross? I also loved smoked salmon. :)

And I need a hair mask. My hair is looking D-R-Y these days. I use leave in conditioners quite frequently… expensive ones.. and they aren’t doing the job how I want it!!

    1. There are so many hair products that claim to have all this moisture and then, they really don’t do anything. One issues is that natural products *Can* be drying; it’s sometimes the chemcials that leave you feeling less dry but the natural products can seem drying, or are drying. It’s so hard to find one that you love. I will say this, 100% there is a Kiehl’s conditioner I have been using for 5+ years, a couple jars of it per year, it’s awesome. I would not sell you on a pricey product that doesn’t work. It does and I love it -buy it at kiehls or nordstrom and they will take it back if you don’t love it.

The BHG feature is just going to be online I think.

  12. Congrats on being in BHG! I love that mag and tear it open the second I get it in the mail.

  13. As a precurser, this may be too much information for some, but when I was on the Paleo diet it wreaked havoc on my digestive tract. I wasn’t using the restroom nearly as often as I was prior to giving up grains. While I am 100% behind the Paleo diet and agree that humans should try to eat foods as close to their natural state as possible, I don’t believe any diet can be one size fits all. In my case, reintroducing some grain back into my diet made me feel a million times better. It’s all about doing what works best for you. I know my digestive tract thanked me for introducing gluten again, haha!

  14. Congratulations on that AMAZING interview with BHG! That’s so exciting to remember back to being a little girl and here you’re interviewing with them. I bet your family is so proud of you and rightfully so, ’cause you rock!

    1. Ha – I don’t think my mom even reads my blog. My dad doesn’t even use email – they are so old school :)
