Blueberry Pie Smoothie

I’ve never been a big pie person because I’m not into crust. I’m into filling.

Most pie has too much crust and not enough filling so I don’t bother.

Blueberry Pie Smoothie (vegan, GF) - A healthy, no-sugar-added smoothie that tastes like a blueberry pie! So good!

Instead of blueberry pie, I made a healthy, vegan, gluten-free, no-sugar-added smoothie that tastes like blueberry pie filling. And it’s so good.

I used 1 bag of frozen blueberries, 1 banana, blueberry juice, vanilla, a sugar-free sweetener and blended it. You can substitute with grape, cherry, or pomegranate juice.

Add enough juice to get your blender churning and start pulverizing the blueberries. Amounts will vary depending on how thick you like your smoothies and how juicy the berries are, but I needed almost 1 cup.

Using frozen blueberries ensures you don’t need to add ice, which would water down the smoothie. You can substitute with fresh blueberries if you have extra, but that’s a problem I never have because when they’re in season I inhale them. I save frozen for baking and smoothies.

The banana adds creaminess, richness, smoothness and doesn’t impart any real banana flavor, so you’re safe if you don’t like bananas, or just omit and use a bit less juice. The vanilla rounds it out and provides an authentic pie filling taste.

Based on how sweet you like your smoothies, how sweet the fruit is, how sweet the juice is, sweeten to taste with your favorite sweetener.

My definition of ‘no-sugar-added’ means I did not dump in boatloads of sugar. There may or may not be sugar in the juice selected, and yes all fruit has fructose (sugar), but I didn’t add any.

It’s sweet, satisfying, full of antioxidants, fiber, and tastes like blueberry pie. Minus the crust. A total win.

They went down so easily and my daughter had a blue ‘milk mustache’ around her lips for the rest of the day.

Blueberry Pie Smoothie

Blueberry Pie Smoothie

This healthy, vegan, gluten-free, no-sugar-added smoothie tastes like blueberry pie filling. It’s sweet, satisfying, full of antioxidants, fiber, and tastes like a blueberry pie, minus the crust. I recommend frozen blueberries so you don’t need to add ice, and they’re readily available and less expensive, although you can use fresh blueberries. Use your favorite juice for blending and add slowly to achieve desired consistency. The smoothies go down so easily, blue ‘milk mustache’ and all.

Prep Time 3 minutes
Total Time 3 minutes

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces frozen blueberries, do not thaw (fresh may be used, but you’ll likely need to add ice)
  • 1 med/large ripe banana (peeled and previously frozen in chunks is ideal)
  • about 1 cup blueberry, grape, cherry, or pomegranate juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • sweetener, to taste (zero-calorie sweetener, stevia, agave, granulated sugar, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients (except start with about half the amount of juice and add only as necessary to to achieved desired consistency) in the canister of a blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Blueberries take awhile to break down, so you may need to blend for a couple minutes.
  2. Serve immediately. Extra portions may be frozen in freezer-safe (plastic) glasses for up to 3 months. Allow to soften at room temp before serving.

  1. Blueberry and jam buttermilk coffee cake with buttery vanilla glaze? Pray tell … how can anybody go wrong with that! I’m a blueberry junkie and the way this thing looks …. I could just eat the screen! Great thing!

  2. Me and my three girls inhaled this! They loved it, and loved that their mouths were vaguely blue. So healthy, too, no sweeteners added at all. Wish I could pack it in their lunch boxes. Would it work with other frozen fruit?

  3. 100% agree about pie crust! Dutch Apple isn’t bad because there’s only crust on the bottom…which I don’t eat. Can’t wait to try this smoothie recipe!

  4. I love smoothies like this! So refreshing and yet enough to sustain me all day. I typically add some strawberries too and almond milk and leave out the juice and sweetener.

  5. Those pictures are so bright and cheery! I had a smoothie for breakfast this morning and after seeing osme of yours, I think it will be another tomorrow! That Pineapple Mango Vitamin C baby is screaming my name! I buy the frozen wild Maine blueberries, they are so amazing. During the season we go to the farm that supplies Wyman’s with their berries and buy them by the pounds! They are amazing. The big berries have nothing on those little guys! Thanks for sharing!

  6. Blueberry pie is one of my favorites! Love this smoothie—The color is so tempting! pinned.

  7. i got to have thos pie smoothie, so deliciousssss, delightful and divine, nobody can resist to such a haelthy and sweet blueberry, let’s dip in :D

  8. I have been thinking about pie lately so much, weird cuz I can have it at work anytime I want but since I am off to Australia in a month I have been trying to resist! This defo sounds like a better route for me to take!! And yes who the heck has fresh blueberries laying around I gobble those down by the handful! LOL I love all the blueberry-ness going on here!!

  9. I almost always pick the pie filling out of the crust! I’ll nibble on a few of the flaky edges, but I’d rather skip the moist/borderline-soggy bottom and just eat more filling. It’s why I usually turn to crumbles instead — much more up my alley! I hadn’t thought to turn my favorite fillings into a smoothie instead. That’s totally brilliant Averie! And guilt-free too. I’d happily slurp up a “pie smoothie” every day, and I’m sure my jeans would thank you for it! Pinning for sure! :) (P.S. Totally adorable picture of your daughter with a blueberry mustache. I’m smiling just imagining it!)

  10. You know I’ve never been a pie person but I would have NO problem having this in a convenient smoothie form!

  11. You started me on a smoothie kick with your Cherry Smoothie. I can’t wait to try this one. Sounds and looks delicious!

  12. I’ve been on a blueberry kick lately, and this looks so amazingly delicious! The color is fantastic!

  13. i am totally a crust kind of person but this recipe and gorgeous pics may have very well changed that! =)

  14. Looks great! It has been so cold here but all I can think about are smoothies! I will have to give this one a try!

  15. Do you know that I eat about 2 cups of blueberries per day?
My health is so important to me and blueberries and my raw beet juice have helped me tremendously bring my health back.
But when I have blueberry pie, I look for extra crust, so I can eat your crust and you can have my filling. OK? lol

    1. You eat 2 c per day! WOW that is awesome! I wish I did :) I totally love beets too. I can imagine that the combo of beets/blueberries is stellar. I would love that right now :) And yes you can totally have my crust! LOL

  16. I just had a piece of apple pie yesterday and was dreaming about how much better it would be if I could skip the crust and just eat the filling! So I’m with ya – this smoothie looks perfect to me!!

  17. This is gorgeous!! LOVE the color. I’m just now starting to add blueberries to my smoothies. So good!

    1. I thought about you when I was writing about crust in this post :) You can have my share, okay!

  18. I was the same about pie for the longest time, always hated the crust. Now I’ve grown to love it but the filling is definitely the best part! This smoothie looks great and I love that you don’t use ice – it’s true it totally waters it down and skimps on the flavour.

  19. I can’t deal with pie – the crust or the filling. The texture skeeves me out. But I love the pie flavor, so ….smoothies! Well, when it warms up, that is.

    1. I can’t see you being a big pie girl just on account of taste but the texture too, okay! Gotcha!

  20. I feel the SAME way about pies. I love pie filling but the crust always seems to turn me away from eating pie. These smoothies look like the perfect solution! :)

  21. You may not be jealous of my snowy winter, but you will be envious of my proximity to U-pick blueberry fields! :) I will file this idea away for hot summer days when using the oven doesn’t appeal to me.

My blueberry pie recipe involves only a bottom crust–2 cups of fresh/frozen blueberries in the crust and a stovetop-cooked blueberry mixture poured on top. Chill and serve. I like it way better than a baked blueberry pie because I feel like I get more fresh blueberry flavor, but you may be onto something with the less-crust-is-more idea.

    1. Close proximity to U-pick blueberry fields is a total treat! Wow, love that :) I wish I had that! And your pie sounds great. When done right, homemade blueberry pie is spectacular and I think just a lattice crust on top or none at all is the way to go!

  22. What a beautiful smoothie and pictures. The filling is always the best part of the pie! :D

  23. Yes to more pie filling and skipping the crust! This smoothie looks fantastic! Sharing!

  24. I love how bright and beautiful the blueberries make this smoothie! I am sure this smoothie would taste amazing with frozen wild blueberries! Need to keep my eye open for a big bag and make this! Pinned!!

      1. I’m so jelly of Trader Joe’s in the states! I need to stop by next time I’m in the area of one – I feel like it might be dangerous because I might buy out the entire store ;) Currently located in Belgium and there’s lots of chocolate but they are a bit lacking on the frozen blueberry front ;)

      2. No frozen berries? Oh that’s bad! The TJ’s ones are like $2.49 for a 12 oz bag and seriously such a good deal. I use them in all my muffins, cakes, etc. (sorry to rub it in!) :)

  25. Literally just had this for breakfast, though I hadn’t seen your recipe, so I didn’t try the blueberry juice. Will have to do that tomorrow morning! Thanks for sharing, I love blueberry pie, and have to agree, I wish pie had more filling. I do love crust though :) It is one of my guilty pleasures! Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous photos!

  26. This smoothie looks so delicious! I love the vibrant blue color. Tasty and nutritious…forget the pie, I’ll go for this any day!

  27. Sounds and looks fantastic! I’m with you on blueberry pie filling — that’s the best part!

  28. I love the brilliantly natural color of blueberries in smoothies! The jars make them fun!

  29. Blueberry pie is one of my favorites! This makes it so much easier :) Yum!

Oh, and I completely spaced on taking pictures, but I made your new favorite chocolate chip cookies last week and we loved them!!! Could not get enough of that soft texture!

  30. Smoothies like this remind me of summer (even though we are getting up to a foot of snow today). Beautiful Averie! I actually like pie, but only if its homemade crust and there is a TON of filling.

  31. I love the color blueberries make smoothies. With so many blueberries in there, I’ll bet the flavor is outstanding!

  32. I usually have frozen berries and bananas on hand for smoothies and soft serve. I still love both even in the winter. The color of this is just beautiful–makes me want one this morning after my run!

    1. I know it’s winter in most of the country but you can’t say no to that bright blue, right!

      1. Very good smoothie! I am sipping as I type. I used pomegranate juice but would like to experiment with others. YUM!!!

      2. Pom juice sounds great! And I give you props for making this in the winter :) I forget just how cold other places still are right now!

  33. Agree on the pie filling thang!
Averie, these photos are GORGEOUS! I always have trouble with reflections when I style food in glass. You NAILED it!
    Pinned!

    1. It’s only taken 5 years and thousands!!! of drink shots to have better luck. And seriously I still get a ton of glare. It’s such a balancing act with enough light, too much, or not enough and everything looks shadowy. But thank you for saying that!

  34. Im with you on the pie front girl but sometimes there is just tooooo much filling. I love the colour of smoothies with blueberries such a beautiful colour
