Ingredients for Campfire Apple Crisp
To make the apple crisp foil packets, youโll need:
- Sliced apples – Any baking apple will work in this recipe. I used Gala apples, but Fuji, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Granny Smith would also be great. I ย didnโt peel my apples, but youโre welcome to do so if you donโt like the texture of cooked apple peels
- Butter – Use a plant-based butter or coconut oil if you need to keep your crisp dairy-free
- Sweetener – I use a combination of light brown sugar and granulated sugar to enhance the sweetness of both the filling and topping, and add a subtle molasses taste
- Cornstarch – This thickens the filling so that it doesn’t run all over the place
- Spices
- Old-fashioned oats – Look for certified gluten-free oats if needed
- All-purpose flour – Use a 1:1 all-purpose gluten-free flour to keep your crisp gluten-free
- Salted caramel sauce – Substitute a homemade caramel sauce, if preferred
- Whipped topping or a scoop of vanilla ice cream (optional)ย

How to Make Campfire Apple Crisp
This might be a “campfire” recipe, but a grill works just as well! Use whichever cooking method is easiest for you.
- Mix together the apples, cornstarch, sugars, and spices. Divide between two large sheets of aluminum foil.
- Make the oat crisp topping and sprinkle evenly over the apples.
- Carefully fold up the edges of the foil packs and seal tightly to ensure no steam escapes, promoting even cooking.
- Because Iโm impatient, I crank my grill to high and let it heat up, which is about 750F (screaming hot), place the foil packs directly on the grill grate, turn the heat down to medium heat, close the cover, and cook for about 7 minutes or until the filling is bubbling.
- Rest for a few minutes. Then, carefully open and serve warm, topped with vanilla ice cream, chopped nuts like almonds, walnuts, or pecans, a pinch of salt, caramel sauce, and a dollop of whipped cream. Don’t forget the spoons!

Recipe FAQs
If you’re actually going camping and want to prepare the apple crisp foil packs in advance, you can. Wait to cook the apple crisp until you plan on serving it, but feel free to assemble and chill the foil packs.ย
Yes, very easily! This caramel apple crisp recipe makes two large foil packs, which serves about four people.ย Feel free to double, triple, etc. the recipe as needed!ย
Because all ovens, grills, and fires vary in their heat output, it’s hard to say exactly how long to cook the packs. I estimate as short as about 7 minutes and as long as about 15 minutes, but it’s highly variable. You may burn the first round if you’re not careful because between the natural sugars from the apples and the added sugars, combined with the heat, charring can happen easily.
This recipe is best on a grill. However, I bet you could assemble the ingredients in a cast-iron skillet, and cook them on the stove.

Storage
Foil campfire desserts are best eaten right away, but if you wind up with leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the fridge. I don’t recommend storing leftovers in the freezer.

Caramel Apple Crumble Foil Packs
Equipment
- 1 Grill
- 1 Medium Bowl
- 1 Small Bowl
Ingredients
Apple Layer
- 2 medium/large apples, diced into 1/4-inch cubes (I did not peel mine, peel if you wish; I used Gala; Fuji, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or your favorite may be used)
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, diced into small 1/8-inch sized cubes
- ยผ cup light brown sugar, packed
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ยผ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ยผ teaspoon ground cloves
- optionally add pinches ground ginger, pumpkin pie spice, cloves, allspice, etc. based on preferences
Crisp Topping
- ยผ cup 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, diced into 1/8-inch sized cubes
- ยผ cup light brown sugar, packed
- ยผ cup old-fashioned whole rolled oats
- ยผ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ยผ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ยผ teaspoon ground cloves
- ยผ teaspoon salt, or to taste
- salted caramel sauce
- whipped topping or ice cream, optional for serving
Instructions
- Preheat grill to high (or preheat oven to 450F), place two large sheets of foil on the counter (approximately 12×18-inches); set aside.
Apples:
- To a medium bowl, add all ingredients, stir to combine.
- Cut butter into the dry ingredients with a fork, and distribute apple mixture evenly between the two sheets of foil in mounded piles; set aside.
Crisp Topping:
- To the same bowl, add all ingredients (except salted caramel sauce and whipped topping), stir to combine, cut butter into the dry ingredients with a fork, and evenly top the apple mounds with the crumble topping mixture.
- Seal up foil packs tightly around the edges to trap the steam in, place packs directly on grill grates, lower the heat to medium, close the grill cover, and cook for about 7 minutes, or until done (bake in the oven for about 15 minutes or until done).
- Place packs on a plate, allow them to rest for 1 to 2 minutes, and be careful when you open the packs (use oven mitts) because there is a lot of steam.
- Drizzle with salted caramel sauce to taste and optionally add whipped topping before serving. Recipe is best warm and fresh.
