Easy Party Pinwheels Recipe

Are you ready for football season and tailgating parties? I’m not really a big fan of the game itself, but I am definitely a fan of football food. Making a meal out of appetizers, snacks, dips, and chips is the best.

I love some good gluttonous party food as much as the next person, but in an effort to lighten things up I made these veggie pinwheels.

They’re meat-free, and you can keep them gluten-free by using corn rather than flour tortillas. You’ll never miss the meat in these rollups because they’re packed with flavor.

There’s a creamy avocado spread I made by mixing avocado with Silk’s Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative, the chipotle seasoning adds a nice kick, there’s bright and fresh cilantro, chewy sun-dried tomatoes, and the cheese is dairy-free (Try brands like this or this).

The tortilla pinwheels are incredibly fast and easy to make and in 5 minutes you’ll be snacking away. It’s usually the fast and easy recipes that go first at parties and these are no exception.

My friends gobbled them up at a recent get-together, and you can easily double or triple the recipe depending on how many hungry fans you have.

What’s in the Tortilla Pinwheels?

To make this easy pinwheel appetizer recipe, you’ll need:

  • Tortillas
  • Avocado
  • Silk Dairy-Free Yogurt
  • Lemon juice
  • Cheddar cheese (use dairy-free, if needed)
  • Chipotle seasoning
  • Sun-dried tomatoes
  • Fresh cilantro

How to Make Tortilla Pinwheels

In a small bowl, mash together the avocado, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and yogurt. Spread the avocado mixture over two burrito-size tortillas.

Add the cheese slices on top, then sprinkle with the chipotle seasoning, sun-dried tomatoes, and fresh cilantro.

Roll the tortillas up, then slice into 1-inch pinwheels.

Can This Recipe Be Prepared in Advance?

Yes! You can make the party pinwheels up to 12 hours before you plan on serving them. The avocado mash shouldn’t oxidize in that time since it gets mixed with lemon juice first.

Tips for Making Veggie Pinwheels

When spreading the avocado mixture over the tortillas, be sure to leave a 1/4-inch margin around the edges so the filling doesn’t ooze out.

You’re welcome to mix and match the fillings of this tortilla roll ups recipe. Use different cheeses, add more herbs, and so on.

This recipe is easy to double or triple, so make however many tortilla pinwheels as you need!

Ingredients

  • 2 large, burrito-style tortillas (flour or corn may be used)
  • 1 medium ripe avocado, peeled and pitted
  • ¼ cup Silk Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon pepper, or to taste
  • about 8 slices of cheddar cheese, softened to room temp (white cheddar, provolone, or your favorite cheese may be substituted)
  • 2 teaspoons chipotle seasoning, or to taste
  • ½ cup sun-dried tomatoes
  • ½ cup cilantro leaves, chopped

Instructions

  • Place tortilla wraps on cutting board; set aside.
  • To a medium bowl, add the avocado, yogurt, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and mash with a fork to combine.
  • Spread half the mixture over 1 wrap and half over the other wrap, leaving a 1/4-inch bare margin.
  • Add the cheese slices (about 4 slices per wrap depending on the size) in an even, flat layer noting that you may need to break the cheese in places to get coverage.
  • Evenly sprinkle each wrap with 1 teaspoon chipotle seasoning, or to taste.
  • Evenly sprinkle each wrap with 1/4 cup sun-dried tomatoes.
  • Evenly sprinkle each wrap with 1/4 cup cilantro.
  • Roll each wrap up tightly and position so the seam is down. Using a serrated knife, slice into 1-inch segments and serve immediately. Rollups are best fresh.

  1. I can’t wait to try this! Great colors and flavors. I’ll be travelling for Thanksgiving and wish to impress making these rollups as one of my two assigned appetizers. I may be expected to prepare and transport about two hours before serving.

How would you adjust for the lead time and guests who dislike sun-dried tomatoes (but will adore the rest)? This dish is purr-fect for guests I known.

…Thinking of garden or herb (green) wraps for easy ID of no sun dried tomato version… Maybe sub fresh basil (for cilantro) and small-diced Roma tomatoes? …Sliced or crumbled bacon? Will appreciate all suggestions.

Thank you much for sharing. Found you via DamnDelicious.net.

    1. I would just omit the sundried tomatoes if they’re not universally enjoyed by all. As for the garden/herb idea, sounds great. Basil and cilantro are two of my favorites and both go great with tomatoes, cheese, deli meat, etc. LMK how things turn out!

  2. I just might be able to watch some football…as long as a plate of these rollups were in front of me.  Girl, that flavor combo sounds amazing, and they are gorgeous looking!!!

  3. YUM! I love anything chipotle, and I’m thinking I could maybe use pepper jack cheese to up the spiciness even more! Thanks for the great idea. And I agree – my favorite meals are appetizers/snacks such as these!

  4. What a versatile recipe!!  I love the flavors here, but I could also see doing apple instead of the avocado, with those same spices.   Or making these in puff pastry.  Or using the ingredients without the wrap and making it into a dip.

Perfect for a game, even though I know you don’t watch them.  You’re crazy.

    1. There are like a bazillion ways and combos to use said ingredients (or similar), like you said puff pastry (I did something like this for my 2nd cookbook with pumpkin spread that I rolled up in puff pastry now that you mention that!)

It’s the perfect gameday food. And watching games? The LAST thing I would spend 3 hours of time doing. Ever. :)

  5. These look so fresh and delicious – the perfect meal to end the summer. I have a whole Pinterest board where, I think, this recipe will feel comfortable. I love making rollups because they require so little cooking and a whole lot of eating xD  But seriously, the recipe is quite open for interpretations and you can even put some cheese on top of them and heat them in the oven for a bit, like mini pizzas.

  6. Happy Monday Averie! With recipes like this one its definitely a happy day for me here, I can never say no to avocado and cheddar cheese! These rollups are the perfect party food, delicious and no mess or sicker fingers!

  7. I love football and ate my share of tex mex yesterday…but I would have loved to be eating these. I’ll be making them Thursday extra spicy!!!

  8. I love the idea of sundried tomatoes in these along with avocado and spicy cheddar– can’t wait to try it!

  9. YESSSS more food that I can “pretend” to watch football for…but really I’m just there to EAT. Avocados are my obsession and I’m loving that spicy goodness of these little rollups! Pinning!

    1. Thanks for pinning! And I cannot even pretend :) I just flat out cannot even sit still for 3-4 hours knowing I could be running, working, shopping, cooking, ANYTHING….lol!

  10. I recently found out our neighborhood get together at the end of this month is a taco bar party–so these or the jalapeño cheese bread would be great to take. Can’t decide (as usual) because they both look so good!!

    1. These are definitely lighter than the cheese bread. More of a ‘fresh and light’ than a whoa, I just ate some decadent cheese bread, which is always fun knowing you brought THAT recipe that everyone went nuts over :) You could bring both because they are both like 5 mins of prep time!
