Or from my post yesterday, “Cheater’s” Guacamole

"Cheater's" GuacamoleIt sounds like there are lots of guac fans in the house!  Glad you liked my 1 minute recipe.  Great for all you cheaters shortcut-loving cooks.

And I hope you all go out and party like rock stars for Cinco de MayoWhich probably means clearing out your Google Reader for many of you. That’s about as “rock star” as I get lately, too, since I’m usually working rather than going out.   My vacation is coming up though!

Questions:

1. Do you like salt?  Have you ever had fancy salt or sea salt?

I am not a fan of salt, at all. Sure, I like the way it tastes and yes I’ve had “fancy salt” in the past but…

2. Do you notice any effects after you consume salt?

I retain tons and tons of water when I eat salty foods.  No matter how much water I drink, and yes I drink lots of water, I have unquenchable thirst when I eat salt-containing or salty foods.  I keep drinking water to quench my thirst only to blow up like a balloon and it takes a good day or two for my body to really “process” the salt.

If I know I plan to eat what I am cooking or roasting and am not making it just for Scott and Skylar, then I won’t add salt to it and they can season their portions as they wish.

Ironically, after being together for 12 years and me doing all the cooking, Scott has lost 50 pounds and has lowered his blood pressure from the stratosphere down to more earthly levels and I attribute my mindful attitude toward salt at helping to reduce his blood pressure.

3. Are there any foods you just can’t “do”?

Some people can’t “do sugar” or have a hard time with portion control with carbs or need a higher protein diet or can’t do dairy, gluten, soy, tree nuts, and more.

For me, I need to be mindful of gluten and dairy consumption and also my salt consumption.

I can do sugar and chocolate though!

  1. I’m not a huge salt person, but I have a special place in my heart for fancy salts!! Those look fantastic and I would use them for, well, pretty much the same things you did :-)

  2. I have very recently learned that I can’t “do” soy (at least, not too much of it) — the minute I have a huge chunk of tofu, my nose starts running like a faucet. This is a recent discovery and, as a lover of “Kisses Knishes” Tofu Knishes (in Chocolate, Apple, Blueberry, etc. – divine!) I’m very displeased about it! But I’m glad to finally learn what was causing my congestion all this time. :/

  3. i am a huuuge salt fan!! you should do a salt giveaway!! lol that truffle salt looks so good!

  4. I love salt! But if I eat too much of it, I am super thirsty and I feel bloated..weird right? :)
As for foods I can’t do, it’s dairy. Makes me super sick, but sometimes I don’t listen and sneak things in here and there :)

  5. I’ve never been big on salt. We have a friend who pours literally floods of salt on everything he eats (except huge servings of dessert, lol)–makes my jaw drop.

  6. These fry ideas are amazing! Not to mention the rest of these photos. Are you trying to make me chew on my hand?

  7. My body can’t “do” a lot of things. I feel like crap when I eat: gluten, dairy, corn, sugar, and salt.

    Yikes!

    1. yeah girl i know you have a ton of food allergies…mine have gotten better and i can have things in small doses again but SMALL doses. Hang in there!

  8. Sweet salt score, I got a seasoned salt gift pack that I just keep on the dining table to sprinkle the various flavors. Great recipe inspiration here.

    1. Yes, but not too much.
    2. Just feeling really dry after eating something that had too much, not good.
    3. Dried fruits tend to not like me that much, something about the dried, concentrated cards being harder to digest.

  9. I don’t like consuming a lot of salt because it bloats me up. My bf always think the food is under salted and I think it’s fine lol

  10. I am not a huge fan of salt either but I am predisposed to hypOtension so I sometimes have to eat something purposely salty (I usually do popcorn) to bring my blood pressure up just a bit. Other than that I rarely add it to foods as I can’t taste the difference.

  11. I like salt. I do use it in my cooking, but there is a fine line between not enough and too much for me too. I don’t like my food salty, I just like to use enough to bring out the flavors. Salt affects me, like whenever we eat something especially salty I drink so much water it’s not even funny. So I do notice it but I’m not majorly sensitive. I do have a problem with sugar and carbs though. Some days I can eat a small piece of something and walk away, other days I can’t stop myself until after I’ve eaten too much. I’ve learned to scale recipes waaaaaay down. 1 or 2 serving recipes are awesome :D I’ve been working on moving my site all morning(while feeding and entertaining kids, haha) and I just decided I totally need a break so I’m sitting down to read blogs. Ahh, I feel like I’ve been completely attached to the computer today and it’s only 2pm, haha.

    1. “Ahh, I feel like I’ve been completely attached to the computer today and it’s only 2pm, haha.”– THAT IS MY DAY!!!

  12. I love salt — I’ll take salty over sweet most of the time. I really only notice how it affects me when I have large amounts (hello Chinese take out!)

There are plenty of foods that I shouldn’t do because they make me feel awful — dried fruit (just started to accept this, I think I’ve been in denial for a while), too much sugar, dairy (except a small amount here and there are ok, but no yogurt, ice cream, milk, etc), and I have to limit certain fruits: apples, pears and peaches.

But I’d love those oreo balls — for me the stomachache would be worth it!

  13. I love salt…salt, salt, salt (I’m singing that!)! I normally go for Kosher and iodized, but I liked Woody’s!

  14. not big on salt! i’m with the sweets team!
HIDDEN salt is another matter…some cereals, for example, are super high in salt…gotta watch for that hidden sodium!
i can’t do wheat or a lot of soy…those are no bueno, for sure!
hope you’re having a great day! rain rain and more rain is our story!

  15. I’m not a huge salt fan. I prefer sweet any day! Although I do like the Lindt darck sea salt chocolate bar….

I can’t “do” apples or pears!!!! Hurts my stomach to just think about it!
