A Chill in the Air

I may be jumping the gun here, but fall really seems to be in effect here.

It’s chillier than it has been, a little overcast, and feels like it’s football tailgaiting weather <— which for me is my cue to head to the mall, not tailgate.  Priorities.

San Diego

Lots of you were so surprised from my last post that I have only turned on my A/C once, for an hour, all summer.   Trust me, I don’t like to suffer and am all for turning on my A/C when needed but I actually turn on my seat heaters in my car at night.  Laugh if you will, but my seat and I are happy being toasty.

Coastal Southern California is extremely temperate.  For about half the year, it’s in the high 60s/low 70s and yes we have our spikes to 80 or 84F, but not too often.  In the winter, the daytime highs drop to the 50s/60s and in the evenings it can get into the 30s/40s.

But it’s moderate here, 50s-70s, for much of the year and we have lots of clear (and sometimes crisp days).

Palm treesEveryone thinks it’s always bikini and shorts weather here.  Wrong!  You’d freeze!

The ocean and coast really moderate the weather here so unlike my Minnesota and Chicago roots, we do not have those cold colds, and those hot, humid, and sticky hots.  I also lived in North and South Carolina and San Diego doesn’t get anywhere near as hot (or humid) as those places.

It almost feels like I should break out my slow cooker or at least put a pot of soup on the stove

All my soups are dump it in one pot, boil for 45 minutes, and soups ready.

Spicy Vegetable, Corn, & Bean Soup in white bowl with spoonI don’t sautee, then add, then transfer, pureee, none of that.  No time to be bothered.

Or maybe a pan of Salsa & Cheezy Baked Beans & Veggies would hit the spot.  And make planned leftovers.

For dessert, it’s time to break out the homemade Dark Rum Caramel Sauce and apples I’m thinking.

Questions:

1. What foods are you excited to make now that there’s a little chill in the air, or there will be a chill in the air soon?

2. Weekend Plans?

I’m working, hopefully spending some time working on recipe development, maybe taking my camera out to play, and will be spending time with my BFF

Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Crisp autumn air screams chilli and cornbread to me… can’t wait!! And I love that you call skylar your BFF, I’m sure she admires you just as much :)
Quick question- do you write using windows live writer? I was trying to download but it says its only for PC’s and I know you use a MAC so I was curious how you got that to work for you. Thanks!

      1. Thank You! It looks like it was not worth the effort between the money and time. I also thought it was necessary to take blogging to the ‘next level’ but knowing that you blog twice a day super efficiently from wordpress I think I’ll stick to what I know!

  2. I found your blog via your guest post on Oh She Glows, and I’m now borderline obsessed. You have the cutest daughter, and your doughballs are to die for!

I’ve got mixed feelings about fall – I’m sad to see summer go (and consequently go back to work [I work in a school]) but I LOVE fall weather, seeing the leaves change, all the seasonal produce, Halloween, and FOOTBALL! I live in a pretty humid climate, too, so I won’t be sad to say goodbye to the frizz that abuses my hair during the summer.

    1. awww, thank you!! love that you’re obsessed and that you tried the doughballs.

thanks for the compliments re skylar, too :)

  3. Oh my goodness say it isn’t so! I’m not ready for fall :\

White Chocolate Vanilla Marshmallow Cake Bars look soooo sooo good! I read your post on them the other day and my mouth dropped. Then drool was wiped :p

    1. Hot cocoa :)

    2. Hmm.. tonight I’m watching a movie with my mom, hopefully filming me making melon bellinis at some point in the weekend/hanging out with friends the same time (how convenient). Miami also has an art walk this Saturday.. so maybe do that and go out for dinner beforehand. Maybe we’ll get some beach time in as well!

p.s. I got the DVD in the mail the other day and I did the workout!!! It really worked my muscles! Once again, thank you so much for hosting such awesome giveaways :)

  4. 1. What foods are you excited to make now that there’s a little chill in the air, or there will be a chill in the air soon?

More hot tea with yummy seasonal flavours, like pumpkin spice and apple cinnamon.

    2. Weekend Plans?

Visiting my grandparents back where I grew up – only 2 hrs away. One grandmother broke her shoulder a few weeks ago, so we’ll be helping out where we’re needed…and taking loads of pictures!

  5. I know what you mean about the weather! I woke up today and it looked all dreary outside. I was with my friend at Peet’s up here in North County and I had capris and a sweater on; it is definitely feeling like fall. I want to get out some hot cocoa or a bowl of minestrone soup.

  6. congrats on the food gawker achievement! i can see why your photos/recipe reached that level of status!
haha, i use my seat heaters ALL THE TIME unless it’s over 80 degrees out. and all summer, i only put the air conditioner on at night. i do not like chills, shivering, or the hint of goosebumps.
if i could ever live in the states, i guess i better head to florida instead of san diego! :)
enjoy your weekend! working here, too!

    1. glad im not alone on the seat heaters :)

florida is too humid year round for me. i love san diego! and if you go inland 10 miles, it’s a whole ‘nuther climate (i.e. hotter!)

  7. PUMPKIN!!! I cannot WAIT for pumpkin. I love fall (summer too!), but hate the prospect of a dreary New England winter. I love winter too, but it just gets dark so early!

  8. Oh how they look delicious on FoodGawker~!! Congrats. I sure wish it felt like fall here. I try not to complain because most of they year it feels like fall…its just July and August that are so intolerable. But it sure is really hot! Your caramel sauce for the apples slices looks yum.

  9. Still not feeling fall here, it’s hot. Pfft, car seat heaters! :-P But oh yeah, CA coasts can be chilly, lows in Fort Bragg were in the 50s.

    1. Anything with beans and winter squashes.
    2. Pretty laid back, will probably visit my grandma in the hospital.

  10. I wish I didn’t have hot and humid sticky days – and by the way, I am so making those salsa and cheezey baked beans. They look so delicious!!!

  11. A chill in the air excites me for? well, not a lot. Like you, I definitely think shopping is greater than football! So I’m always down for shopping!

A chill in the air DOES make me excited that apples will be good tasting and inexpensive again! :)

  12. I agree! I went for a run the other night and thought it felt like fall. I kind of enjoyed it to be honest. I think a lot of people picture San Diego as a very HOT climate. They don’t realize how mild it is. Everyone that visits wears shorts and tanktops in the winter and then they complain that they’re cold. They don’t realize we have this huge ocean that keeps us nice and cool and comfortable. I love it! I don’t think you could ask for better weather.

I also don’t need to use the A/C. Angela is a big sweater at night so she always turns it on and I freeze.

I reallllly think you need to invite me over for some of that amazing food!!! :) Where are you living now??
