On our last day at the beach in Aruba…

Aruba Beach

…I asked Skylar if she wanted to get her hair braided and she, of course, said, “YES!”

Enjoy the pictures.  There are tons!

I had fun taking them and watching her enthusiasm!

But most of all, the sheer joy on Skylar’s face during the whole hair-braiding experience was wonderful to watch.

I may have shed a few tears watching my “baby”, now 4.33 years old, have her waist-length hair braided.

When did she go from bald newborn to having waist-length hair?

Did the last 4 years just fly by?  Yes, they did!

Averie and SkylarScott took these before the hair braiding session.

The highlight of her braiding experience was selecting which beads from the Braid Lady’s Bag of Tricks she was going to put on the end of each braid.

Each braid has two little beads on the end.

Digging for just the right beads was a big job.

And she felt so proud when she picked out those beads.

This was the end of our trip.

A very wonderful, amazing, and memory-filled trip.

Thank you for everyone who’s been reading with me the past 18 days that we’ve been here in Aruba.

I am sorry to have bored anyone with my beach pictures ad nauseum.

Or my local island pictures.

And I even have a highlight reel post coming soon.  Lucky you.  And me. We get to re-live the whole trip, one more time, probably over the weekend when that post goes up.

From my last post, Efficiency and New Technology, thanks for filling me in on what kind of computer you have and what kind you’d like to have.

For those of you who already use and love Windows Live Writer, I know.  I knew it already. When I get back to San Diego, I plan to do my final research and then pony up for a screaming fast new machine.

Thanks to suggestions that I move photos and other data to external drives and try to clean up my existing machine, but after 4+ years, I just need a fresh start.

This definitely isn’t a fresh recipe, but it’s a good one.  And it may be new to some of my new readers.   Thanks for finding me and saying hi!

And they take about 5 minutes to whip up, no food proc or Vita required.

Questions:

1. Have you ever had your hair braided?

My mother never let me when I was a kid on vacation.  She always said the braid ladies have dirty combs.

But Skylar’s Braid Lady’s comb looked just fine to me.

Skylar said it looked like Barbie’s comb.

Edited to add, I submitted this photo for judging

The Braid Lady could braid hair faster than anyone I’ve ever seen.

The entire “event” was over and done with in about 10 minutes.

Skylar getting braids She could braid from root to tip after the hair was parted and sectioned, in not kidding, about 8 seconds.  Unreal speed.

The only time I ever had my hair braided was in Cancun when I was 19 on Spring Break.  Oh, I wish I had those pictures!

2. Any vacation stories or memories from your childhood, or adulthood, that you want to share?

I’m all ears!

3. If you made it this far, thank you!

You may be wondering why I have so many of these pictures?

Two reasons: first, I never know what pictures are truly going to look like until I hit publish.  So that’s one reason.

The second, is I am very serious about pursuing my career dreams and aspirations and I am going to use some of these in my portfolio.  Yes, my photography portfolio.  More on that another time.

Do you have any favorite pictures from this post?

Why or what spoke to you in the image.  What story was told?  What did you feel?

Those are questions I ask myself when I am making pictures to use a Penny term.

P.S. Thanks for everyone who continues to comment on the Healthifying Desserts & Beans in Dessert post.  I had a feeling it would be somewhat popular when I posted it, but had no idea it would be that popular.  Thanks for your comments, stories, and thoughts.

Stay tuned for Blogging 103 and maybe some airport and airplane blogging…

  1. Averie, I tried to comment on your career post but comments are closed! Anyways, I just wanted to say that I’m proud of you for taking photography and running with it. I don’t think there is just “one” career out there for us, but rather many that should come and go as we grow older and find inspiration in different things.

I’ve only ever wanted to be in a job that I enjoyed showing up to everyday. And right now, I have that! I also reeeeeally want to write a novel about a true-life murder mystery. I know, weird topic given what I blog about, but when I was a journalist I LOVED court and crime reporting. I’ve been looking into some local cases here at home and waiting to find one that I can turn into a really great story :)

In other news, hope you have a good trip home!

  2. I really enjoyed all these pictures! Skylar just seems so genuinely sweet and precious. Gotta love kids! I had my hair braided once in Jamaica… it hurt but I was sooo excited and left them in for probably way longer than they were supposed to stay in for!

  3. eautiful pictures averie! wow I love them! i ALWAYS used to get my hair fully braided when we went away. As i got older it was ‘uncool’ so i would only do a portion of my hair but it was always fun and i loved the ladies that did it they were always so friendly!!!

enjoy your last day on the beach!!

  4. All the pics look so great and she looks like she was having such a great time! Hope your trip back is safe and uneventful.

  5. aww, Skylar looks adorable in these photos! Especially #14 where she looks super excited! I’m loving the braids.
I got my hair braided once in Mexico many years ago. I will never do it again. I was out in the sun so much that week my scalp got burned and started peeling. It was fun to have the braids at first though..

  6. Oh my goodness, Skyler is just so adorable! It looks like she enjoyed the hair braiding so much, must have been to watch! I am jealous of her waist length hair.
I am always suprised by how many people dont actually know how to braid. Do you know how?
I remember braiding my own hair was I was so young and I am glad my mom taught me how to at an early age. To this day I still braid my friends hair Its like a fun past time I think :)
I know this is probably an annoying response, as I am not being specific, but I think all the pictures look so great and fun!!

  7. Absolutely LOVE this post! Skylar is so adorable! I’m glad you gave her the experience of getting her hair braided by one of the ladies on the island…my mom never let me when I was young either (dirty combs, like you said), but this spring – at age 23 and in the Dominican Republic with my boyfriend – I finally did it! I felt like such a goofball with a full head of braids but I just said “What the heck!” and did it anyway!

  8. Cute pics, how fun!

    1. I had my hair braided on a cruise awhile back and they were a nightmare to get out! :-P Natural curls and tiny braids aren’t a good combo!
    2. Just that I need a vacation! :-)
    3. Hard to choose, there are so many great pics in this post! Your skills are improving. :-)

  9. Skylar is so adorable ! And i love your photoes, especially the black and white onces!
Im glad you have enjoyed your trip, and even now when it is over, youll have so many good memories to look back at! And many beautiful photos:)
And, I love that you keep postin old recipes in new posts! It is so easy to forget those from the past, but so many of them sounds delicious, like the pb balls you posted today! Thanks for remindinbg us :)

  10. Ah I love love love all your pictures! Skylar’s baby blues kill me :) what a beautiful little girl.

And I only slightly resent your beach pictures purely out of jealousy ;) But I’m glad someone gets to enjoy them! :))

  11. Hey Averie,, your pictures are amazing! If I may add anything, it is just to say less is more. The same picture in both black and white is a little overkill. I say this out of love for you and wishing you lots of success!!!

  12. I cannot believe she’s four! She looks so adorable with her braids :) Family vacations for us in the past consist of several trips to a family camp in Maine, and also every other year family reunions at the beach in Delaware

  13. Wow looks like you’ve had a wonderful time! Ive never had my hair braided like that. It’s just too thin for braids to hold well or look good in it. But I love it on other people!

  14. my husband and i are going to aruba for the first time in august. by the looks of your pics, i won’t be disappointed.
