Have you ever tried coconut oil?  Did you like it or not?

I used to hate coconut oil.

The first coconut oil I ever bought was refined coconut oil and I won’t say the brand but it was gross.

I thought it tasted like I was eating a cross between and a hunk of wax and Hawaiian Tropic tanning oil.

I moved onto Tropical Traditions which has been my go-to coconut oil for the past few years.

I’ve also tried Nutiva, Navitas Naturals, and now Kelapo.

I also did a post on refined vs. unrefined coconut oil if you’re curious about the differences, pros & cons.

How do you like to use coconut oil or what recipes do you make with it?

Do you use coconut oil for anything besides eating it or cooking with it?

Not only do I cook with it, but I use it as a hair treatment

How to use Coconut Oil For Hair Treatment

You don’t have to buy “special” coconut oil for hair.  Whatever kind of coconut oil you have will work perfectly fine in your hair, I’m sure.  Makes a great leave in conditioner and smoother but just a little bit unless you like the greasy look.

I also use coconut oil on my skin, elbows, knees, lips, you name it, it works great as a moisturizer.

What do you make with coconut oil or coconut or how do you use it?

  1. please show where I would be able to obtain the recipe forBaked Orange Coconut and Banana Doughnuts.  I’ve searched you recipes and was not able to find it.  Thank you, Geri  at  gerirosemary@gmail.com   It looked soon good and I wanted to try my hand at making it.  THANKS again.

  2. LOVE that you linked to this post, Averie. I see that you’ve made those vegan chocolate bars with cocoa powder, coconut oil, and sweetener before! I didn’t add vanilla to mine, but maybe I will next time!

and OMG. Those Roasted Coconut Ginger & Peanut Butter Carrots… omg omg I am freaking out. The title alone has so many of my favorite foods in it! I need to look through all of your older recipes one day. I’ll be in true tastebud heaven!

    1. I am tempted to say yes – but I don’t have personal experience. I would suggest using half butter and half coconut oil and see how that goes, i.e. rather than 1/2 cup butter cut in, cut in 1/4 c butter and 1/4 coconut oil, both chilled. LMK how it goes & what you end up doing and the results!

  3. Hello I am constantly on the look out for ways to get healthy, I appreciate your article, sounds tasty! This is actually really good advice!

  6. The Roasted Coconut Ginger & Peanut Butter Carrots look amazing, I’m clicking that link next! I left a comment about your coconut oil chocolate and how much I loved it – I’m not sure how I’m keeping my hands off it and just having one small piece a day, but I swear it’s getting better with every bite :) I like using coconut oil to mix with to make syrups, which I saw first on OhSheGlows.com: Angela mixed it with maple syrup for a pancake syrup and with chocolate chips for a chocolate syrup etc … my last use was to mix it with 74% cocoa chocolate for a glaze on a chocolate-blueberry cake, I’m being asked to make it again because my friends and family loved it so much! Coconut oil = win :D

  7. Coconut oil is my new favourite thing. I use it for cooking and in my oats … and I am going to start using it to bake once I get organized.

  8. i love using coconut oil! It’s so good for you too. I’ve read it actually boosts your metabolism some and gives you energy in spite of the saturated fat content.
    Yummy stuff too! :)

  9. so many good recipes, must start baking!

    chocolate protein popcorn??? yes please!

  10. I just started using cocunut oil in baking and everything has such a light feeling to them. So good!

  11. I hear ya on busy weeks, ready for this one to end! Great coconut oil recipes, so many treats I need to try!

    1. Yes, I go through a lot of it in raw recipes and cooked vegan dishes.
    2. Mainly for raw desserts, stir fries and popcorn.
    3. I tried it as a face moisturizer, but a little too greasy for me.

  12. Coconut oil’s probably one of my top 5 fave foods right now! I put it in everything. Your vegan chocolate SAVED me when I was bf’ing Jelly Bean. And it’s so yummy that I still make it:)

    1. I ate it all the time when I was still nursing, too! good fats = good milk making :)

  13. I just used coconut oil in my hair for the first time today! Very timely post :) I noticed my hair is soooo dry and damanged from heating products that I’m thinking I need to use it every day. I’ve only ever bought the generic Whole Foods version, so I’ll have to see if it’s refined.

  14. everything looks sooooo good! I go through at LEAST 250mL of coconut oil a week. I love it! I’ve never tried Kelapo Coconut Oil. I don’t think it’s available in Canada… but I should check again!

  15. Do you notice a big difference between brands (aside from the first one)? I’ve only ever tried one kind and I love it. In additions to baking, I use it on my cuticles – they get really dry and coconut oil locks the moisture in. And the smell makes me think I’m on the beach. :)

    1. I think they are all fairly similar when you are using them IN recipes…no one eats it directly off the spoon as you would with say, peanut butter :)

  16. I am all about the coconut oil hair treatment! It gets messy but in the end it’s totally worth it :)

And the smell, oh my…it’s like being on a paradise island.

  17. Interesting, I’ve never heard of that brand. I love coconut oil. I’ve been using Nutiva and I just got some Tropical Traditions that I haven’t tried yet. I love using a tiny tiny bit on my hair and using it on my skin. It’s so nice. I’m constantly telling my hubby to use it on his hands because they’re so dry from working outside. It works great. I have so many recipes with coconut oil that I want to try :)

  18. I just had to post to say I made your chocolate cashew butter (i.e. I didn’t use the coconut) and it was finger-lickin’ amazing!! But even though I didn’t use the coconut oil in that recipe I have been using coconut oil a lot more lately. My favourite recipe is lucuma fridge fudge. Just ground, almonds, coconut oil, syrup and lucuma mixed and smooshed and set in the fridge. I have (too) much love for that recipe. Those roast potato fries look superb….I may just go without the coconut oil on that recipe as well as I don’t think my other half would be so big into the taste, but the covered/uncovered cooking method sounds like a very good idea :)

  19. The first time I tried coconut oil (about 7 years ago) it was refined and disgusting. The next brand I tried was almost tasteless and was used mostly for cooking. About 3 years ago I tried the Nutiva brand and love it. It is my go-to brand, and I get it in the largest jar – the next step up would be the gallon pail. I have also tried Tropical Traditions, which is also great. The only problem with TT is it is shipped from the USA and I would have to pay more in shipping, and then pay custom fees.

Some of the recipes where I use coconut oil (most are your Averie): No Bake Vegan Mint Chocolate Coconut Snowballs, Chocolate Coconut Snowballs, Falvoured Popcorn, Raw Vegan Coconut Oil Chocolate, Vegan Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Coconut Oil Protein Bars, Almond Joy Fudge, Chocolate Cream Stack, Sunbutter Chocolate Bars, Almond Power Bars, and Vegan Chocolate Frosting. Also use coconut oil instead of butter when cooking and baking.

I use coconut oil on my face every day, and as a hair treatment every couple months during the winter. I also bring coconut oil with me to Barbados and use it as an “after sun” moisturizer.

  20. I have never tried it before, but I did buy some. Although I have no idea if it’s refined or not, I still haven’t tried it yet! I haven’t figured out how I first want to try it, so in my cupboard it sits.

  21. i love Chobani with berries and chia seeds and cinnamon! yummy! More yogurt recipes please!!

  22. I love coconut oil – I use it as a hair conditioner, as a body lotion, as a face mask, as a foot balm, lip balm..don´t know it there is anything I haven´t tried:) Oh and I cook with it, of course. I even used to put a spoon in my coffee, when I drank coffee (I stopped a year ago).

  23. i’ve never tried coconut oil…
“…it tasted like I was eating a cross between and a hunk of wax and Hawaiian Tropic tanning oil…” –> sorry, averie, but this description does not make me want to go buy some! :) glad you have found a better version, though, in Tropical Traditions!
i had not even heard of coconut oil til i read about it on blogs…i think i could get it in my local health food store, but it’s quite expensive.
if i DID have a jar, i would likely use it as hair treatment!
    have a great day!

  24. I have never tried coconut oil.

The first time I heard about it was in Kevin Trudeau’s book Natural Cures THEY don’t want you to know about — you’ve heard of it I’m sure? My boss at the time went out a bought a jar, ate a spoonful (his book recommends it) and she spit it out and threw the jar away. I never tried it myself!

  25. You wrote something that people could understand and made the subject intriguing for everyone.

  26. I notice that most blogs are amateurish. On the other hand,I have to say that you have done a good job here.

  27. I love coconut oil too! I had a similar experience with it at first. I bought refined and just thought it was plain and bland. But when I discovered unrefined cold pressed…yum! It flavors up a lot of different recipes in my house!

  28. OH yeah! I have that big canister of coconut oil!! yum love it! these days its been very melty in my cabinet since its warmer out (I ws told thats okay and it doesn’t need to be put in the fridge though) I want to try your coconut chocolate kale chips and of course the avocado smoothie!! never tried coconut butter though!!!

  29. Yum! I use coconut oil in savory cooking as well as in my hair. It’s tasty and nutritious, right to my hair roots ;)

  30. What DON’T I use coconut oil for? Amazing stuff, it’s a staple of my diet. So, how does the Kelapo compare? Is it as good as Tropical Traditions? I’ve never heard of that brand before.

  31. I love coconut oil, but not straight up- it has to be with lots of other stuff, or the texture gets to me!! I love your raw chocolate that I turn into “frosting” for raw chocolate cake…ohmygosh, so good. It was the biggest hit of all the desserts at Christmas, and no one knew it was raw!

    1. After more than 2 years I discovered this recipe and reading through the comments I see you mention a raw chocolate cake. Could you please tell me which is the recipe? Thank you

      1. I don’t recall or even know – that comment was from quite a few years ago! I’m sure if you google raw chocolate cake, you’ll find something you like.

  32. I love cooking with coconut oil – it gives veggies such an interesting flavor!

  33. I have never used coconut oil for cooking before, but have used it for my hair & skin. I’m going to pick some up next time I’m at the market. Thanks for the reminder :)

  34. What’s crazy is that I never even realized how many of your recipes used Coconut oil! I actually have never used it myself before, but I’ve heard of many people who do and love it. And I had forgotten that it could be used in your hair as well – I think I’ve also heard of it used as an in-shower skin treatment? Such a neat product!
