Smoothie Meal Prep Ideas

Back to school season is upon us and while some parents stress out over homework and carpooling duty, I worry about something else: what to prepare quickly and easily for breakfast.

Making mornings easier, more streamlined, and knowing that I have breakfast waiting for us is a great feeling.

I simply take a couple of these meal prepped smoothie packs out of the freezer and toss the contents into the blender with Silk Unsweetened, Vanilla Almondmilk for a perfect for grab-and-go breakfast or easy snacks.

The Silk #TastesLikeBetter campaign is rooted in providing delicious dairy-free products that inspire people to live a life grounded in positive choices that offer both taste and nutrition.

Silk products are dairy-free, lactose-free, cholesterol-free, and free from artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives. The smoothie pack recipes are naturally gluten-free and vegan but you’d never notice because they’re satisfying and flavorful.

Of course you don’t have to be a kid or have kids going back to school to enjoy the convenience of these frozen smoothie packs!

What You’ll Need to Make Smoothie Packs

The combinations for smoothies are endless. My general rule of thumb is as follows:

Ingredient Ratios for Smoothie Freezer Packs:

  • 1 to 1 1/2 cups frozen berries/fruit
  • Half of a banana for creaminess
  • A handful of leafy greens
  • A big dollop of your favorite nut or seed butter
  • 1/2 cup milk (regular or non-dairy)

Tip: You can get fancier and add chia seeds, maca powder, dried oats, protein powder or whatever you enjoy.

Smoothie Pack #1: Blueberry Smoothie

The blueberry and greens smoothie is great if you’re trying to work more greens into you and your family’s diet (you can’t taste them!), and the peanut butter provides a boost of protein.

To make a blueberry smoothie pack, you’ll need:

  • Frozen blueberries
  • Banana
  • Leafy greens (such as kale or spinach)
  • Nut or seed butter of choice
  • Milk of choice (I used Silk Unsweetened almondmilk)

Smoothie Pack #2: Tropical Smoothie

For a lighter, more refreshing smoothie that can be enjoyed as a snack or mid-morning pick me up, I recommend the tropical smoothie freezer pack.

  • Frozen pineapple
  • Frozen mango
  • Banana
  • Milk of choice (I used Silk Unsweetened almondmilk)

Tip: I prefer using frozen fruit because I don’t need to add ice which can water down smoothies.

How to Make Smoothie Packs

As you can imagine, preparing make-ahead smoothies is a simple process:

  1. Add the desired ingredients to separate zip-top bags (sandwich size is what I use), seal, label, and freeze.
  2. When you’re ready to consume, add the contents of one zip-top bag to the canister of a blender. Blend on high power until smooth.
  3. Add additional Silk Milk if necessary to achieve a smooth consistency. Serve immediately.

Can I Use Fresh Fruit in the Smoothie Packs?

Of course! I used frozen fruit because it’s often the better deal, but you can also freeze fresh fruit to use in smoothies.

Ultimately, though, you’ll want to be adding frozen fruit (whether pre-frozen that you got at the store or fresh fruit you frozen yourself) to the blender to make your smoothies.

If you’re adding fresh fruit, then you’ll have to add ice as well and that can water down your finished smoothie.

  1. This is an awesome idea! My husband and I both drink a lot of smoothies. Even though it doesn’t take a ton of time to make them, this would save 10-15 minutes. Love this!!

    1. It’s always nice having the packs in the freezer waiting for you. Makes it really fast/mindlessly easy when you don’t even want to think :)

  2. This is an awesome idea, Averie! How come I never thought of that! Thanks for the enlightening post!

  3. What can I substitute for bananas since they are now making me hiccup, same with cucumbers. Like the rest especially hidding greens into the mix.

    1. As I said in the post, feel free to improvise and sub your fave fruits/veg/greens/etc. Whatever you have on hand or that you love. Enjoy!

  4. Hi
I look forward to your posts and recipes!
Just to be clear- you freeze with the fresh greens right?
    Thanks!

    1. Thanks and yes freeze everything together – fresh greens, fruit, whatever you’re using. Technically you could use frozen greens since you’re going to blend it all up but I find frozen spinach in a box/bag a pain to deal with because it’s hard to drain, hard to portion into pieces unless you thaw it fully, etc.

  5. You are so right about the endless smoothie possibilities! Freezer packs are a great idea as I am usually pulling out multiple bags of frozen produce. One of my current favorites is cucumber and pineapple. It’s refreshing and reminds me of kiwi.

    1. So many possibilities indeed! Cucumber and pineapple is one of my faves, too! I love that combo for juicing too because both of them yield a lot of juice which is nice!
