Non-Alcoholic PiƱa Colada Smoothie Recipe

Oh how I love a piƱa colada for breakfast. This version doesn’t have alcohol in it, but you can fix that if you’d like. I was sorting through my photos and realized I made this smoothie when we were in Aruba in August and didn’t post the recipe.

It’s now or never, because all of a sudden I feel like I won’t be cool if I don’t have a steady stream of apple and pumpkin recipes coming daily. As much as I enjoy them, I don’t mind hanging onto summer a bit longer.

San Diego and most of Southern Cal gets our hottest weather of the year right now. It’s been in the high 80s to mid 90s every day for the last week. These piƱa colada smoothie go down very nicely!

Eagle Beach, Aruba

This pineapple banana smoothie is vegan, gluten-free, and won’t break your caloric piggy bank for the day. It clocks in at under 100 calories.

Pre-made piƱa colada mix is loaded with empty sugar calories. You may as well just eat frosting with a spoon (it’d probably be more fun that way, too). So I lightened it up, without sacrificing taste or flavor.

To add a pop of coconut flavor for pina colada authenticity without adding calories, I used coconut extract. It’s sold in the baking aisle near vanilla and other extracts. It’s usually much more reasonable than vanilla and only about $2 bucks for a 2-ounce bottle at my grocery store.

If you’re a coconut fan, it’s tasty in everything from buttercream frosting to maple syrup for a fun twist.

The bright pop of pineapple, the creaminess from the banana, along with coconut undertones make this healthy fruit smoothie so satisfying. And with a cherry on top, I can’t think of anything I’d rather be drinking right about now. I wish I was drinking it here.

It’s almost the weekend and I’ll take mine with a shot of rum. It’s after 5 o’clock somewhere.

PiƱa Colada Smoothie Ingredients

To make a virgin piƱa colada smoothie, you’ll need:

  • Frozen pineapple chunks
  • Banana
  • Vanilla almond milk
  • Coconut extract
  • Sweetener of choice (optional)
  • Shredded coconut (optional)
  • Maraschino cherries, for garnish (optional)

How to Make a PiƱa Colada Smoothie

Making a piƱa colada virgin smoothie at home couldn’t be simpler! Simply follow these steps:

  1. To make the piƱa colada smoothie, simply combine the pineapple, banana, almond milk, coconut extract, and optional sweetener in a blender.
  2. Blend until the smoothie reaches your preferred consistency.

Can I Prep the Smoothie in Advance?

Yes! The leftover piƱa colada smoothie mixture can be frozen for up to two months.

You just want to make sure the glass is tightly covered with plastic wrap, or store the smoothie in a jar with a lid. You don’t want the freezer smells seeping into your smoothie!

Can I Add Rum to my Smoothie?

Yes! I made this as a non-alcoholic piƱa colada smoothie, but you can add a splash of Malibu rum to yours if you’re enjoying it as a poolside beverage.

Can the Coconut Extract Be Omitted?

I know someone will write saying they don’t like coconut. You really can’t have a piƱa colada without coconut, and if you like piƱa coladas, this smoothie will be right up your alley.

The coconut flavor isn’t overly intense, promise. However, omit the coconut extract if you wish.

If you simply don’t have coconut extract, then add the optional shredded coconut instead. So long as you add coconut flaovr in some way, you’re good to go!

Tips for the Best PiƱa Colada Smoothie

I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk in this easy smoothie recipe, which only has about 30 calories per 8 ounces. It’s nearly insignificant.

If you want to bump up the coconut flavor and don’t care about stats, use coconut milk or a splash of cream of coconut, like Coco Lopez. So good, rich, and creamy.

If you want a thicker smoothie, I suggest freezing the fruit beforehand and adding slightly less almond milk than this recipe calls for. You could even make almond milk ice cubes and throw those into the smoothie to make it extra thick.

And, of course, for a thinner piƱa colada smoothie just add in more almond milk.

  1. I made this the other day and love the tropical flavors (I also added the rum extract ). It is a nice thick piƱa colada shake! I made a double batch so I could freeze some and re-blend in the vita. The leftovers make fabulous soft serve too!

    1. So glad you tried it and everything you said about making a double batch – I usually make a 2x-3x/batch of whatever I post about for your exact reasons. I pour the extra into plastic cups, put them in the freezer and it’s a grab-and-go breakfast. 30 sec in the micro and I dont even bother reblending. I mean, I could, and it’s better :) But just more dishes. Lol And then whatever I run out of cups for, I put in a bowl and eat it as softserve. Great minds think alike & glad you enjoyed this one!

  2. I just made this for my breakfast and its delish! I did however make a few changes to it for my sweetener I used coconut liquid flavored stevia, added a chobani pineapple Greek yogurt and afew cherries into the mix. Yum

    1. coconut liquid flavored stevia – sounds delish! I have had a ton of flavored stevia in my day but never coconut. Wow, that sounds go good! And I love the pineapple Chob. It, and their banana, are my faves for baking/blending/cooking with! Thanks for trying this & LMK what you did!

  3. I just think that you take the most beautiful pictures. I’m loving the tropical flavors here.

  4. I know how much you love your pina coladas! This drink looks amazing and really makes you wonder about t the need for all that sugar and fat in the premixed stuff. I make homemade drinks like this all the time. I can only imagine how good this is, Averie – with that creamy banana and flavorful coconut extract. I need to go buy some of that extract, by the way. It would be SO GOOD in so many smoothies and such :) Pinned this beauty!

    1. Soooo good. It’s better with rum. Fingers crossed, 7 hours later – my internet is up. The joys of moving. Where’s that rum?!

  5. Hi Averie, You are actually luckier to live where you do in SoCal. I live in Fontana (about an 1.5 hrs) from u. This week we had heat warnings. On an average it is 102-105 deg. Our AC bill is just gonna run up, but then there’s no way a human can just ‘bare’ this weather.
I’ll try to make ur drink soon! :) hopefully that’ll cool me off. take care.

  6. I’m not a fan of coconut, but I sometimes like Pina Coladas, so I would totally try one of these! I agree with you, apple and pumpkin recipes are the bomb, but they can wait a little bit longer. :)

  7. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere right now… which means it’s totally OK to have this for breakfast, right? :)

  8. I like the way you think. Pumpkin and apple recipes can wait. For now I’m also still enjoying summer treats and cocktails. Fall will be here soon enough!

  9. Averie, this is absolutely perfection! I could have this for breakfast every single morning before I hit the gym!

  10. Please don’t start with the endless pumpkin and apple yet….I’m not ready. I don’t know if I ever will be. I love winter squash, but I love my summer veggies and foods so much more.

I like to use the coconut extract in recipes that “need” that flavor, but I don’t want to really taste it. I can use just a tiny splash. It also works in a pinch for a curry if you don’t have a can of coconut milk.
