Microwaved Food: Safe or Not?, Magazine Finds, TV Shows, Tattoos, Life and Blogging

Happy Monday everyone!  How was your weekend?  What did you do?  As I mentioned, it was my Birthday on Saturday, and I had a low key dayFine by me as I had such an action packed previous week doing a fitness show, moving, unpacking and getting settled!  I have had readers and friends call me Superwoman before, but truly, last week, it did take Herculean efforts to pull off a Bodybuilding Show, an Interstate Move, and Unpacking it all, but I did it, and this week is all about getting into a new flow and rhythm and reconnecting with my friends here!

Today after I hit the gym, I am going to see a dear friend who I haven’t seen since we moved away 9 months ago.  She’s 8.5 months pregnant.   And I am going to go keep the pregnant lady company while her 2 year old and Skylar play.  And if it’s warm enough, we’ll swim in her poolCan’t wait to see her!

Corn is insanely cheap right now.  10 ears for a buck at my grocery store! 

I would love to say I am roasting it using my Over-Roasted Corn Method

This method is so easy!  

But I have been using the Cheater’s Method lately.

After cleaning it…

And then bundling it in Cling Wrap in pairs

I store the bundles in the fridge like this

And when the time is right I take out a bundle, and nuke.  5 minutes per bundle, flipping over once midway through.

Not Raw.  Not Perfect for some.  Works for me at this point in time.   I don’t always have 45 minutes to roast something.  5 minutes is more like it!

It turns out just fine.  I love raw food.  I love raw broccoli, cauliflower, and I can even do raw Brussels’s Sprouts, and raw corn is fine, but the family prefers it softened and cooked a bit.  So, I oblige with a quick nuking.  

Pair the fresh corn with fresh greens, tomatoes, raw green beans, and edamame and I’m happy.

From yesterday, thanks to everyone who chimed in about Gay Pride and what you do to embrace the gay community and if you’ve ever been to any gay bars or pride parades.  If you ever have the opportunity to go to a pride parade, I hope you go because they are so much Fun!   Nothing says fun like glitter and singing the YMCA!  

Seriously, I was glad to hear everyone is totally on board with the Gay community and that we all understand that all people deserve love, respect, and tolerance, no matter what.   

I get interesting, ahem, emails (nearly daily about this, that, or the other thing) that I don’teven bother blogging about because they are usually so far off the deep end and don’t deserve to even be mentioned, but I was grateful no bigots stepped out of the closet after the gay-themed post.  Whew. 

And woo-hoo for Raw Vegan Chocolate Recipes!  Glad those all looked yummy!

On the way to the gym over the weekend, I brought This New Go-Cup

And walked past a Magazine Shop.  I picked up a Natural Bodybuilding Magazine

Hey, she stole my Line: Not Your Typical Soccer Mom!

I was impressed that a bodybuilding magazine had a story on Bikram Yoga and Skin (Dry) Brushing

And I thought that this nearly 50-year woman just looks happy.  You may dislike her body, but she seems happy and who are we to judge others?  As I said yesterday, tolerance and respect for all, even if they make choices you personally wouldn’t make, should be a mandatory life lesson!

My other magazine find, was this Tattoo Magazine.  Why?  Because I love tasteful ink and always think about getting more.

In particular, I’d like a quarter sleeve (If you don’t know what that means, it means a tattoo covering the top quarter of my arm.  My bicep, tricep, and shoulder.) 

This is a little bigger/longer than a quarter sleeve, it’s a full sleeve, but I want something bright, vibrant, colorful, bold, and happy!   Wait, I think that’s sort of my personality in a nutshell.

I think the right ink on the right person is beautiful.  

I love this woman’s confidence.  She knows who she is.  She’s not afraid to rock her own look.   To me, her eyes say: Like it or not people, this is me. Ink and all.  I am woman, hear me roar.  (Yes, I get all that from her eyes and expression.)

I also read that this young woman, 20 years old, fell asleep at the wheel of her car and is no longer on this earth.  That saddened me greatly and I wanted to pay tribute to her here. 

I’m no stranger to tattoos.  I have an Om on my Foot

A Fish on my Stomach I got when I was 16 using a fake ID.  For no reason other than a classmate had one and I thought it was cool.   And it also survived pregnancy and is still in the shape of a fish, so that’s good.

And I have some other randoms like a star on my toe and a sun on my lower back.  I am thinking about filling in my upper right arm with bright ink!  I’ve wanted to do it for years, but until recently I couldn’t because for the past four years I was either pregnant or nursing.  Needles not recommended. 

I talked to a fitness competitor who has a huge arm and torso/side flank wrap-around piece and I asked her if the judges ever demerited her because of her ink and she said no, as long as your muscles and body looks great, that’s all that matters.  Isn’t that the truth and it was great to hear!  Plus, the competition spray tan is so dark that it takes the bright edge off most tattoos.

1. What are your thoughts about microwaves? 

From My Favorite Things in the Kitchen Post: (ok I wouldn’t call the microwave a “favorite thing” but it’s handy)…
In a perfect world, I’d prefer not to use it as I’ve mentioned before, but there are times when it’s easiest, fastest, the and most convenient option.  Katie got a lot of great comments on the Are microwaves safe issue,  and, I know Heather’s not a fan, and I don’t love the nuke box either, but it’s a tool in my kitchen that I use.   Some people don’t own one or have given it up or given it away, but for me, with a small child, and the fact that I’d rather not run my oven, I use a microwave, as minimally needed.  The Raw Police can come arrest me.

What do you think about microwaves?  
Evil box that kills your food and contributes to negative health issues and conditions? 
Or, it’s perfectly fine and who cares.  
Or, somewhere in the middle lies the truth but you use it anyway?   
Or something else?

2. Does anyone watch the Real Housewives and are you going to watch Bethanny’s new Show?  I plan to and they are sitting on my new DVR.   But, I had to give my old DVR back to Cox Cable before we left Phoenix and I had a couple episodes of Kendra and The Hills and The City that I didn’t get a chance to watch.  There, now you know all my mindless tv shows that I watch. Of course, MTV and E! are pretty notorious for running the repeats about 8798 times so I am quite confident I will see the missing episodes.
What shows do you like right now?  For about 20 minutes a day, I love some mindless tv where the worst thing in someone’s life is what are they going to wear to a party.  Oh, the horrors.…haha!

3. Tattoos.  Do you like them?  Do you dislike them?  Fine on others but not your thing?  Do you have any?  Do you want more?  What’s your take on tats?  Do you find them attractive or not?  Why?  Can you picture me with a quarter sleeve?

4. Best Thing You Ate or Did Over the Weekend?
Me = Having my Birthday and being with my family.   And enjoying Sunday’s weather:  Not a Cloud in the Sky, 70F, perfect for a long power walk as a family.

Stay Tuned for More Posts about Life.  Now that I am back on “my turf” in San Diego, I already have plans, park days, and fun life stuff going on with my friends.  I want to establish a rhythm of life that includes more time away from my computer and being in the company of friends, nature, and just out being Skylar’s mom and living my life. 

Going forward, I can’t promise how much blog commenting I can keep up with, I can’t promise what I will post, or the length or depth of my posts.   Much of my time in Phoenix was spent at my computer.  I can promise that trend will not continue here.

What I can promise is that my posts will be based on what’s going on in my real life.  Real, raw, honest.  Life is always more interesting to talk about than apples and broccoli salads.  Hope you like it!  I’m pretty sure you all prefer life to broccoli, too. 

5. What do you like to blog about?  What do you like to read about?  I’ve asked this question before, here and here, for example, but since we are all always changing, evolving, life is changing, it’s fun to ask again.

Me = I like to blog about what’s going on in my life.  Food is fine, but I get sick of talking about it and like to interject my feelings, thoughts, emotions, life stuff, into my blog.  Which of course opens me up to critiscim, but that’s a risk I take.  I am edgier and not a safe “mainstream” person, and do not blog “safe”.  How about you like to blog?
