Spicy-Sweet Chili Peach Chicken

With summer grilling season in full swing, this grilled chicken recipe will come in handy when you need anย easy, healthy dinner, with zero cleanup, thatโ€™s ready in 10 minutes.ย It reminds me a bit of thisย Sweet Chili Grilled Chicken!

I made thisย peach chicken with peach preserves, but you could easily amp up that delicious peach flavor by grilling peachesย alongside it.

I like using peach preserves because theyย caramelize once heated on the grill and make this chicken incredibly sweet and sticky.ย Theย chili sauce balances out the sweetnessย from the preserves perfectly!ย 

This was perfect to grill on a beautiful evening! The flavors were delicious and I served it with brown rice and grilled zucchini and squash. Canโ€™t wait to make again:)

Ingredients and Notes

For this easy grilled chicken dish, youโ€™ll need:ย 

  • Peach preservesย – I haven’t tested it, but I imagine any fruit preserves would taste great. Add extra fresh peaches for a sweeter taste, too
  • Low-sodium soy sauce – For a gluten-free option, substitute coconut aminos
  • Chili garlic sauce – The grilled chicken breasts have aย slight amount of heat and spiceย from the chili garlic sauce, but itโ€™s very mild for us. I used 1/3 cup chili garlic sauce, butย if youโ€™re sensitive to heat, dial that back to taste. If youย like more heat, add more chili garlic sauce, cayenne pepper, paprika, Tabasco, jalapenos, serranos, etc., to the marinade. The peach preserves are a lovely counterbalance to the heat
  • Olive oil – Substitute avocado oil, if preferred
  • Lemon juice – Apple cider vinegar will also work. The acidity helps tenderize the chicken and adds a refreshing taste
  • Chicken breasts – I prefer boneless, skinless chicken breasts for grilling, finding they take on the flavor of the marinade nicely. That said, you can use bone-in chicken breasts or bone-in or boneless chicken thighs, if preferred. Adjust the cooking time as needed
  • Fresh cilantro, for garnishing (optional)ย – Fresh basil, rosemary, or fresh thyme would also taste great

How to Make This Grilled Peach Chickenย Recipe

This recipe is a cinch to make, as is most anything on the grill!

  1. Add everything but the chicken into a bowl and whisk to combine. Then, pour about 3/4 of the marinade into a zip-top baggie.
  2. Add in the chicken.ย Tipย โ€“ Before adding it, pound the chicken to an even thickness with aย meat tenderizing malletย for best grilling results. If I plan ahead, I like to marinate my chicken overnight for the full flavor effect, but if youโ€™re running short on time,ย even 30 to 60 minutes will do.ย 
  3. Squish the chicken around to coat it in the marinade, then set it in the fridge forย at least an hourย to soak up all those flavors.ย 
  4. Once marinated, grill the chicken breasts on a preheated grill. You’ll know it’s done when it reaches an internal temperature of 160ยฐF when you pull them off the grill. During a 5 to 10 minute resting period, the temperature will actually climb toย 165 degrees F, which is the safe recommended temp for chicken breasts.
  5. Brush the reserved marinade over the chicken while it cooks, rest, slice, and serveย 

Grilling Tips

1. You donโ€™t have to have and probably shouldnโ€™t have your grill cranked up to its max heat! Itโ€™s better to go a little lower and slower so the chicken cooks through on the inside before the outside gets burnt or charred.

2. I aim for a medium-high heat on my grill and keep one side hotter and the other cooler, closer to medium heat, so I can move the chicken around to a cooler spot, if needed.

No Grill? No Problem!

If you donโ€™t have an outdoor grill but still want to make the recipe,ย you can bake the chickenย in a 9ร—13 pan in a 375ยฐF oven until itโ€™s done. It will depend on the exact quantity and thickness, but start checking at 25 minutes and bake until done, possibly 30-35 minutes depending on your particular variables.

Or, use anย indoor grill pan,ย and recreate a similar flavor experience!

Ingredients 

  • 1 ยฝ cups peach preserves
  • ยผ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • โ…“ cup chili garlic sauce, or to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice or apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste
  • about 2.50 to 3 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, I used 4 medium sized breasts
  • fresh cilantro, optional for garnishing
  • peppers, optional for garnishing (serrano, jalapeno, habanero, etc.)

Instructions 

  • To a medium bowl, add the peach preserves, soy sauce, chili garlic sauce, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper and whisk to combine; set aside.
  • To a large ziptop plastic bag, add the chicken and about three-quarters of the marinade. Seal bag and squish the contents around so chicken is evenly coated. Place bag in the fridge to marinate for at least 1 hour (up to overnight is fine if you can plan ahead). Set aside the remaining unused marinade to brush on chicken while it cooks; refrigerate it if youโ€™re marinating overnight or for longer than an hour or so.
  • Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Add the chicken and grill for about 10 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through; flip intermittently to ensure even cooking. Discard the bag with the marinade the chicken was. marinating in.
  • Brush the reserved marinade on the chicken intermittently while it cooks.
  • Optionally garnish chicken with cilantro, peppers, and serve immediately. Chicken is best fresh but will keep airtight in the fridge for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Nutrition Stats – Because you are discarding the larger portion of marinade after you remove the chicken from the bag with it and place the chicken on the grill, you are obviously not consuming every last drop. However, the stats take into account that you would be since it's a computer generated estimate and cannot distinguish that point.     Just found your website. Itโ€™s terrific. I made a batch of peach bourbon jam and was thinking of something with chicken, so made this recipe. I grilled five boneless chicken thighs, having marinaded them overnight.

    Two and a half thighs were supposed to be leftovers for tomorrow night. Not. Theyโ€™re gone.

  5. I have not made this yet, but I bought the wrong kind of chili sauce. I bought the Heinz chili sauce. Will this work if I add garlic to it or should I just go back to the store and get the correct one? Will it not have enough heat and wind up being too sweet? Please advise :)

    1. I really have not tried it with other chili sauces so cannot say for sure. If you want it to have more heat than what it already has then add a little bit of Tabasco or cayenne pepper or something to boost the heat. Or just buy a different bottle of sauce.
